8:00 Quick correction on your Amtrak mention, the Surfliner ends at San Luis Obispo, so if you want to take the train to San Francisco/Bay Area you'll have to change trains in LA to the Coast Starlight (or take an Amtrak bus from LA to Bakersfield and take the San Joaquin from there). Also, San Diego-LA is *always* ~$35 (maybe $37). They sell unreserved coach tickets, which means if you miss the train, you can actually use it between the same cities within a year. The downside is that coach can oversell (rare but it does happen), but it's nice to have that consistent fare. FYI, business class is usually just $20 more and you'll get a bottle of wine and snacks on board, and you have access to a basic lounge in LA. The tickets are reserved though, so you can't miss the train you're scheduled for (and prices for that do fluctuate).
Thank you for this great video!! I am planning to visit San Diego in about 3 weeks. (3rd wk of April) and this was so comprehensive!!. I will be staying at the Navy Lodge in Coronado and I'm trying to figure out how to get to North Island using public transportation. (haven't finished watching the video yet). I will be coming from Disneyland in Anaheim (or possibly from Long Beach). But I may need to rent a car at least for a few days to go to Legoland and SeaWorld. But now based upon this video and a few of your others, I know I'm going to go on the Old Town Trolley Tour and get an all day bus pass. And I know places to go to eat!! I'd have never known to go to all these places. I really need 2 or 3 weeks in San Diego now. The last time I came to California, 23 years ago, back in 2000, I literally just passed the sign on the highway and went to Laguna Beach and Newport Beach instead. (I was visiting family in other places like Diamond Bar and West Covina and explored the LaBrea Tar Pits and places nearer to LA. There's so much to do here in San Diego, now I'm like, do I have time to go to the Zoo? Kudos to you on your fully information packed as well as entertaining videos. I feel so very prepared to choose what I will enjoy most and hopefully better able to choose (or at least offer guidance on) what my 21 yr old son and my 23 yr. old daughter may enjoy doing!! You do a truly phenomenal job!!
Thank you for your amazing video. I had jury duty and had never used the trolley before. Your video gave me the perfect information I needed to navigate it with ease and confidence. I just may use it for our next Padres game, or trip to the airport.
Great vídeo Jay! I was enjoying this beautiful city 11 years ago! I really miss everything I lived there during my one month stay in SD. Your vídeo made me live that again! I hope to visit SD again one day. Thank you so much! / São Paulo - Brazil 🇧🇷
This was so informative and helpful! I’m somewhat new to the city and have a car but would like to use public transit more. Thank you for this great video! 👍
This video was one I wanted to see. Thanks. ... I'm also wondering what it's like to bike (eBike) around San Diego. A series about San Diego without a car would be cool. Also, a video about which places to avoid in San Diego for crime or other reasons would be interesting. :)
Great job showcasing the different modes of travel. I'm glad San Diego has other options than uber or rental car .Many years ago when I lived there I did take the trolly to TIjuanna, also took other buses .I did also walk and ride a biike .When I got a car I loved it.Thanks for mentioning all the fares.
Jaycation!!! I watched this video and many others before I visited San Diego for a week back in August. You're spot on!!! I used the trolley but also booked a Zipcar for a lot of my trip. I even took the Old Town flyer to and from the Airport to the Trolley. Thanks for including all the details including the Pronto card. I live up in the Bay Area so will be visiting SD again soon; I just wanted to say thanks for the quality content. This was a Godsend for me; thanks again buddy!!!
Very helpful and informative. I am flying down to SD from the Bay Area next week and was debating renting a Zipcar for the entire week I am in SD or just using transit. This is helpful. I will probably do 4 days with a Zipcar and 3 days taking transit.
Jay - first time jury duty and trolley rider, but tomorrow i will be taking Blue Line from Nobel to America Plaza, and trying that pizza 😂 I was wondering about the Pronto app too… will be using that as well. Thanks for the video, couldn’t have been more perfect!
I’d love to see more cruise ships here, but our terminal is so ugly. FYI, ships cruise from here to Mexico, Panama Canal to Caribbean/Florida, Hawaii and Alaska. I don't know if this video was in response to my suggestion to you a few months ago (I had wanted to know if I could live in SD without a car), but either way, thank you for it! This was pretty helpful :)
I've been to Comic Con for the past 5 years (prior to pandemic) and have relied on just my car for transportation to and around the area. Parking there in July is worse than finding a hotel. I think this year I'm going to look into using the public transit, like Pronto to try and help me save SOME headache that I've had to deal with in the past. Do the rates often change during the busy holidays and events like SDCC? I'm also considering a monthly parking permit with one of the ACE locations, but unsure how that process works or how likely someone not living in the San Diego area could get one for that time. I'd love a local's advice! Great video!
So Trolley and Bus rates stay the same and as for parking, i linked the ace website in the description box, keep an eye out because SDCC will send out a parking email and you can reserve a pass through that. The rates vary depending on the lot but u can also gauge how far the lots are from the convention center.
Great video. Thanks for all the info! I have one question that might be dumb - Do any of these transportation options not allow strollers? I'm planning a trip for me, my wife and our 3 year old daughter and I'm trying to figure out how we're going to get around. I used to take the grey hound from long beach ca to the grey hound station near petco field in 2014 it was like 10 bucks then I took the train to Qualcomm stadium. That grey hound station was pretty ghetto.
@@Jaycation it was more so the station than the bus it self although the bus did have some sketchy characters. For some reason the bus ride from long beach CA to las Vegas nevada is less ghetto. The worst ride is from LB to Sacramento that is agony.
Did I miss something? It sounded like you were already in San Diego but then…you seemed to be taking a long ride INTO San Diego? “Nobel Drive”? …”UTC”?? What does all this mean? WHAT CITY ARE YOU STARTING FROM? Is the Nobel Drive parking lot a part of San Diego? Or…are you in a nearby city?
An excellent intro to SDMTS! :) SD Trolley has come a long way since I moved to SD. Back then, there was only one line: San Ysidro-Civic Center. (Dang ... how many years have I been living in SD?!?) Overall, I like the layout of all three routes. In particular, connecting both SDSU and now UCSD to the trolley network. I have a wishlist for additional extensiots for the trolley network, but I will not get into it at the moment. Jury duty and riding trolley ...... tell me about it! :D My funniest experience with riding trolley was about 20 years ago when a man who sat across my seat started smoking. The trolley operator engaged his PA system in a matter of few seconds. (Back then, there were no transit police.) This smoker, after being on the receiving end of the over-the-PA-warnings, finally had enough and got out of the trolley. Oh, boy! Giovanni's?!? I have stopped at America Plaza a plenty of times but never got to try out any one of the nearby restaurants, except for Starbucks. But the two slices of pizza from Giovanni's featured in this video looks yummy.
Thanks! I figured a video like this would come in use for everyone thats in San Diego or visiting. The trolley is a good option especially for college students. Beats paying $5 plus per gallon for gas if you can't help it!
@@Jaycation Not to mention, for college students, parking is also a major pain in the ass, both in the price of parking permits and the ensuing traffic congestions. When I used to attend SDSU, I either took a bus or drove my car to the Fashion Valley Transit Center, then took trolley. Last, but not the least, having easy access to the trolley network also means students have more options when it comes to looking for places to live. As for driving to the Fashion Valley Transit Center, its only major drawback consists of very packed parking lots during major sporting events or major shopping days (e.g., seasonal holidays, Cyber Friday/Monday).
Pronto app isn’t working, not sure if others have experienced this. Sucks cuz I was looking forward to using it. Now they have my personal info and I have an app I can’t use.
Yes, but you won't get free transfers for 2 hours after payment. Also, if you have the card you don't have to have the app. It's just convenient for reloading the card.
One minor correction. At 1:40 you said the 15 is right in the middle between the Mormon temple and the trolley station. It’s actually the 5 freeway. Not a biggie though. People will find it on their gps.
This is confusing for me. I live in Sacramento, so we just have one daily pass, not a reloadable card. You can get a reloadable card, but it’s not required. We also have the Zip Pass app that you can buy mobile tickets on. I have family in San Diego and have visited for years, but I’ve always taken my car. I’m thinking about moving there and using transportation a lot. So there’s no option to buy a daily pass on the Pronto App? Also, let’s say I get the physical $2 card and load the $6 on. Even if I take 2 rides that each take $2.50 off, what happens for my third ride? I won’t get a citation because I loaded $6 on there? I just want to make sure I get this right. My family in San Diego hasn’t tried the transit there yet so they’re not sure how it works. Thanks for any help! P.S. In Sacramento, on the phone and on the physical card, each pass shows an expiration date and time. So for the daily pass, it shows you can use it until the next morning and that’s how bus drivers and fare-checkers on the light-rail (train) know if you’re cheating the system or not.
Fares are capped at $6 per day, so in your scenario you would be charged $2.50 for the first trip. If the second trip is more than 2 hours after the first (you also get free transfers within a 2 hour window using Pronto) then you would be charged another $2.50. Then the third trip would only cost $1, and the rest of your day would be free.
Great video man. I’m from LA but I love San Diego. Quick question though. If I get the all day pass for six dollars, does that mean I can go from the border all the way to downtown and then back again to the border with no extra charge
Before retiring, I used MTS Blue Line and Rapid buses to commute to and from work every day (saved $2,000 on gas and tolls in 2019). Your point about VALIDATING YOUR PRONTO CARD before riding is important. Transit police will check your pass at random. On one trip home, my pass was checked at City College Station before boarding the trolley; again at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center; and again at Barrio Logan Station. I've also had it checked on a bus. You definitely don't want to get a citation for trying to cheat the system.
@@prettymsdance Hi. Yes, it can be confusing. I just checked my Pronto app on my phone, and it only allows you to purchase a monthly pass, not a day pass. But, honestly, their "Best Fare" pricing eliminated the need for either a day or monthly pass. The "Best Fare" pricing will stop charging you once you hit the day pass dollar value or the month pass dollar value, no matter how many times you ride after that. So in your example, if you're only taking two trips, it would be less expensive to pay for each trip ($5 total) than to load the $6 onto your app or physical card. But if you know that you're going to take more than two trips in a day, the Best Fare will automatically stop charging you once you hit the day pass value of $6. (BTW, transfers within the first 2 hours of activating your fare are free; you still have to tap the fare readers each time you board.) So let's say you took the trolley downtown to work at 9 a.m. ($2.50). At the end of the day, you wanted to go spend some time in Balboa Park so you take the bus ($2.50). After 3 hours of wandering around the park, you hop on the bus back downtown ($2.50) but you're hungry and have a nice leisurely dinner on the waterfront for 2.5 hours. You hop on the trolley home ($2.50). If you added up each individual fare on that day, it would be $10, but the "Best Fare" feature will only charge a maximum $6 for the day-the value of a day pass. The day resets at midnight. I use a physical Pronto Card, but the app would work the same way. IMHO, the best way to do this-and the way I do it-is to set up a Pronto account for either the card or the app, and set the account up for automatic reloading using your credit card on file. You can select the amount you want to initially preload into your account and you can select when the balance gets to a certain level, when the account is automatically reloaded. For me, because I use MTS pretty regularly, I loaded my account at $25. Fares are automatically deducted from that amount, and I set the account to get automatically reloaded back to $25 when my balance gets down to $5. It works wonderfully, and I never have to fiddle with loading value onto my card at kiosks. It's pretty seamless. You can learn more here: www.sdmts.com/rider-info/how-ride Hope that helps.
Hi. I'm from OC. I plan to take the SD Flyer Shuttle to SD Airport. Can you recommend where I can safely park my car for free for 7-8 days? Or, I can take MTS 992 to the SD Airport. Your viewers would appreciate the hidden spot where we can park safely for free before hoping on the shuttle/bus. Any suggestions? Thank you!
I will be visiting San Diego for a day and flying back home. I want to experience the beach and good food. I would like some options to commute there and back to the airport. Thanks ☺️
I agree, if you want to see SD you got to have a car; however, if you're planning to do a specific area like Downtown or area that has expensive or limited parking, the Trolley is good to use for the day. That's how I do LA as well since traffic also sucks and the tourist trap areas are easily accesible via the LA Metro.
@@JaycationYeah, So Cal was set up for commuting. Sucks that they didn't build it around a transit infrastructure to begin with. If you stay in the suburbs (Like CV, KM or Mira Mesa), you need a car to get around. If you go into the city, the train avoids the traffic and parking expense. I think SD's Trolley is pretty cool though. You can go to many of the places like Little Italy and Old Town, and it is better now that the train has a stop by UCSD; SDSU students have always had it good. When I was in SD for work a few years ago, I would get a day pass and after work, would take the train after hours to go to Downtown or Santee for Phil's.
Another great Jaycation video! As a note, you don't need to get the physical card if you have the app! You know...if you wanna reduce plastic use AND save a couple bucks 💵💵
Didn't know about that airport shuttle to Old Town or the free downtown rideshare thing. I'm a frequent visitor with family in the suburbs, but I'm finally moving there and can't wait to actually rapid transit! My small city has one useless bus route and nothing to connect nearby cities, which has been a pain as someone who can't drive.
I've always wanted to take the Trolley to the border!
I did it before, from Mission Valley to SY. It was a fun ride with so many places to stop
its ok, nothing as efficient as an NYC subway
ive only done that once too when i was 18 haha

Pronto app isn’t working, not sure if others have experienced this. Sucks cuz I was looking forward to using it. Now they have my personal info and I have an app I can’t use.
You're on the Blue line.
How do I got from el Cajon to Amazon on otay mesas I just moved here
for MTS bus can you just pay in cash on the spot without downloading the pronto app?
Yes, but you won't get free transfers for 2 hours after payment. Also, if you have the card you don't have to have the app. It's just convenient for reloading the card.
Yes, cash ok...🎉❤. No change. Have small bills $_$$.
One minor correction. At 1:40 you said the 15 is right in the middle between the Mormon temple and the trolley station. It’s actually the 5 freeway. Not a biggie though. People will find it on their gps.
thanks yeah when i talk fast sometimes i accidentally say 15 or 5 or vice versa
Then the third trip would only cost $1, and the rest of your day would be free.
this is train names coaster mts trolley bus amtrak
The 15 is between the Mormon temple and the Nobel trolley stop? The 15?
yeah i spoke too fast and always stumble with the 5 and 15 oops
Can you park in fashion valley and mission valley during comic con. I thought it was blocked off?
Theyre not watching all the time but i wouldnt chance it. Better off parking at old town or nobel drive garage theyre free
@@Jaycation Sounds good! I did research on Old Town Station and they have plenty of parking.

I ain’t no tourist. Just never b been on a train before 😭
Get on one!
@@Jaycation I was thinking of riding down to San Diego. I’m from Oceanside.
@@thebiggestcheeseoriginal trains are awsome and can be much more comfortable than driving and are usually wayyy better than busses
Don't use Hertz - you may get arrested for auto theft- despicable company!
No... no... no... no... no. DO NOT TAKE MTS! Lots of murders are occurred from here.
An elder woman 🧓here, never !! Bothered on trolley, busses, nothing!!
Great video man. I’m from LA but I love San Diego. Quick question though. If I get the all day pass for six dollars, does that mean I can go from the border all the way to downtown and then back again to the border with no extra charge
Yup its valid for 24 hours

Just moved here from a small town that never had big public transportation this helped a lot thank you
The trolley is by far my favorite yeah it does take a minute to get to point B
But they have a ton of good stops
yeah takes a little longer but if its the only option, its not bad
Before retiring, I used MTS Blue Line and Rapid buses to commute to and from work every day (saved $2,000 on gas and tolls in 2019). Your point about VALIDATING YOUR PRONTO CARD before riding is important. Transit police will check your pass at random. On one trip home, my pass was checked at City College Station before boarding the trolley; again at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center; and again at Barrio Logan Station. I've also had it checked on a bus. You definitely don't want to get a citation for trying to cheat the system.

(BTW, transfers within the first 2 hours of activating your fare are free; you still have to tap the fare readers each time you board.)
So let's say you took the trolley downtown to work at 9 a.m.

Hope that helps.
MTS Bus 992 takes you from the America Plaza to the airport. Another great way to get to your flight!
Thanks ☺️

happy to hear!
I agree, if you want to see SD you got to have a car; however, if you're planning to do a specific area like Downtown or area that has expensive or limited parking, the Trolley is good to use for the day. That's how I do LA as well since traffic also sucks and the tourist trap areas are easily accesible via the LA Metro.
yeah i think i just grew up driving everywhere here and got used to it rather than public transport in sd
Next to Chicago. San D. Has 😊😊 amazing buses/trolley/trains! Always my go-to😊!
Another great Jaycation video! As a note, you don't need to get the physical card if you have the app! You know...if you wanna reduce plastic use AND save a couple bucks 💵💵
yeah i just prefer having it just incase technology fails haha
@@Jaycation haha that's a fair point
Oh my goodness. Thanks so much for this.
Are the physical and virtual card different?
Cool Video !
