  • German Fallschirmjaeger defend a Norman village against Canadians. This is a probe from the Few Good Men's Garry Owen Cup, with Eniced73 representing Team USA and me representing Team World.
    This is Combat Mission: Battle for Normandy, set on the Western Front from July to September 1944. Mods-wise I'm running the ubiquitous HQS sound mod, Vin's Geometric icons, Vein's effects and a tweaked version of Barbarico's War Movie filter mod. Combat Mission is a game developed by Battlefront.com.
    One of the most realistic tactical simulations ever made, Combat Mission covers a wide variety of military settings, from World War 2 (Normandy, Market Garden, Sicily, Italy and the Eastern Front) to fictional modern conflicts in Syria (Shock Force) and Ukraine (Black Sea). You can find out more about Combat Mission by visiting www.battlefront... and especially the forums.

    I was just watching someone play CM BS and thinking " I really can't bare to watch them make so many bad decisions and getting their men killed needlessly".
    Then found your channel and it is a pleasure to watch you play so well.

    Shoutout to the mortars for this match : one immobilized medium tank, and ~6 casulaties on crack troops. Two shells that had quite a lot of impact :D

    Well fought! Nice to see the Fallschirmjagers get some love, and a plan come together like that! I'll admit I was worried after your first platoon got annihilated and you hadn't really peeled away the Canadian armor yet. By my estimation you hadn't quite killed a full platoon of infantry at that point, which is never a great spot to be at when you just lost a full platoon. But here we see the advantage of knowing where the enemy is coming from. That platoon gave their lives to annihilate a company of Canadian infantry.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  4 роки тому +8

      Cheers man! By my estimates my forward platoon traded favourably: with the scouts they were about 43 men strong and there are a good 50+ Canadians piled up in front of Objective 1. That's counting bodies after the fact, so while I had a feeling they went at least 1:1 I had no way of knowing for sure until after the battle.
      Even without that, you're absolutely correct though: they slowed the enemy down long enough for me to accurately judge their avenue of approach and concentrate the rest of my force to recieve it.

    The choice to go heavy on Fireflys was interesting. They might have been great if you brought in big cats. But without heavy armor to face off with, it’s a tank with no/very limited(and poor) HE rounds and fewer machine guns for handling infantry.

    Nice video. This is, IMHO, an example of the fundamental flaw with unit composition being driven by points. If you are attacking you need at least 3:1. 1:1 even if his "1" is better quality than your "1" wont really work. Much better, IMHO, to have know correct forces say he has a Company, you have a Platoon. If he wins in less than X minutes its his victory. if you hold longer than X minutes then its your victory.

    • @YpipY
      @YpipY 4 роки тому +7

      I get the historical argument here, attacking with 1:1 manpower would have been considered suicide, especially by the allies. But gameplay-wise I'm not sure if it would be very fun to be outnumbered 1:3. Not that the it would not be fun to try and hold out for as long as possible, more that the game is not made for it. Either you give the defender less men, in with case they would likely not have enough men to cover the entire map and would not have enough units to make very many meaningful decisions with, or you would give the attacker more men, which would just be a slaughter since there is a limit to the effectiveness of more men in a small area.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  4 роки тому +10

      I would prefer it this way because it gives you flexibility and choices- that just opens the game up so much. In a setup of platoon vs company... knowing what the enemy has (HQ + 3 squads, for example) gives you so much information before you've even started.
      The points dynamic also entails an element of risk: here we fought 1:1... but if I had gone for an elite FJ force then the ratio would have tilted in the Canadian's favour. How reasonable is it to expect someone to bring high quality German paras? Pretty likely. There's definitely a subset of the CM playerbase that seems to gravitate towards elite forces- I'm just not part of it.

    • @whya2ndaccount
      @whya2ndaccount 4 роки тому +1

      @@YpipY But you don't need to defend "the entire map" you defend the objective. You then need to make the important decisions (2 up, 1 back or vice versa, what is your reserve, C-Atk and or C-Pen plans ...) Points based is just a spreadsheet exercise (an exaggeration).

      @@usuallyhapless9481 Yep understood but that's why I stopped playing the CM family, even though I was involved in its development. People just "cherry pick" their forces instead of "going with what you have" like in RL. E.g. a Platoon often has zero / very limited heavy weapons but yet in CMXX they tend to be loaded up with ATGMs, HMGs, etc. I suspect my interest in RL simulation maybe different to the broader CM community of "game" players (not meant as a term of insult just a different focus). Anyway your replays continue to be entertaining.

    I can see a few errors your opponent made.
    There was very little to no obvious use of artillery - preplanned artillery is generally a huge attacker asset. With all those houses and hedges, I can't understand why he didn't take some artillery. There was also very little reconnaissance by fire applied in situations where it would have been most useful. The guy practically fed you those scout teams.
    Then you get to the attack itself. Your opponent attacked across a very wide front. In this way he triggered virtually all your outposts and had them operating as intended as opposed to flanking them.
    It was a really cool video, but your opponent really didn't seem to know what he was doing with CM.

    • @CODRD
      @CODRD 4 роки тому +1

      He didn't have artillery in the first place. I can't see why he didn't throw in a few mortars at least with his platoons.
      Also another problem the opponent had was if he went to regular or veteran experience he could have brought up an extra company with a tank or 2 to bring them up one of the flanks.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  4 роки тому +4

      Ammo count is often overlooked! This battle was going to be 45 minutes max and with small forces only, I wasn't expecting to face down hordes of tanks... nor was I expecting the Marders to survive long enough to run out of ammo if they kept missing their targets! I would have to check, but I'm pretty sure 2 Marders have more ammo than 1 Stug though.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  4 роки тому +9

      I'm not sure what the exact origin is- I've never come across it out of the CM community. It just means pixel-troops, so I guess some Axis players are responsible. (I spell it pixeltruppen, but who knows?)

    • @David-rs4po
      @David-rs4po 4 роки тому +10

      @@usuallyhapless9481 I actually do know the origin. There is a tiny but vocal part of the CM community that has some kind of insane complex about saying 'Germans', 'Nazis' or 'Americans' because they think it denigrates the men that died and isn't properly descriptive.
      Pixeltruppen is a term that all sides can use without that vocal minority getting on their high horse about all the dead heroes and the reality that we're all obsessively playing a game that simulates something that really wasn't very nice.
      There are similar strong opinions on including blood in the game and the use of child soldiers in the game. For example in the Scottish Corridor campaign the Hitler Youth appear - most weren't 18. The inclusion of civilians in the game has also been quite controversial even though you'd expect many of these areas not to be empty.

    If a soldier discharged a shoulder fired anti-tank rocket from inside a building, he would kill and or wound himself and everyone else in the room with the exhaust blast and air pressure from the weapon. Only to be used in outdoor areas.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  3 роки тому +5

      Originally the game wouldn't let rocket based AT weapons be fired indoors at all (leading to the PIAT being marginally less of a joke weapon), but it was changed to allow it... though anyone in the room is instantly suppressed and potentially wounded. It IS possible to fire them from in buildings, especially if you've taken measures to mitigate the backblast, but it's still not fun.

    German Paratroopers and their equipment. Still would have been up to date in 1960. British commonwealth was still for 80% in WW 1. In this battle they had Fireflies and would have been better off with the HE round of the standard 75 mm Sherman. One team had the right tools the other didn't.

    • @usuallyhapless9481
      @usuallyhapless9481  4 роки тому +5

      50-50. Equipment is important, but its not everything. Commonwealth armies tend to be more combined arms focused- sure the British Infantry is a bit lacklustre than the FJs, but they're also cheaper and likely to be backed up by cheaper tanks and cheaper artillery. Its only a guesstimate, but bumping everything on the Canadian side down from Elite to Regular would have 30% of the points... that's enough for maybe a couple more tanks and some 81mm mortars. Those could easily have been a game changer. With regards to the Firefly... if you're CW fighting Germans and you're worried about nasty German armour then that 17pdr looks very attractive- the Luftwaffe can only bring Stugs, but Stugs can be difficult to penerate from the front with the 75mm. All the options are there, it comes down to choices.

    • @System-Update
      @System-Update 4 роки тому +6

      Not unreasonable to expect a Panther (Luftwaffe not withstanding) so 2 Fireflies was a fair choice. 2 Marders for the same points as a Stug was inspired although I think TDS as mobile AT guns is a particular Hapless favourite. Then again, so is patience which 1 up 2 back takes plenty of.
      Another throughly enjoyable and really well constructed AAR. I would like to see one where you get it badly wrong though: you are very gracious to opponents (rightly so) but I’d love to see more “this was an error, the decision made for x reason was poor” moments. In the turn based videos we at least here how you agonise over making decisions.

      Line of sight is kind of complicated. The enemy could be firing at an area and not see you well or your soldiers could be cowering and unable to see over something. I usually don't manually target (unless I'm area firing) and let the AI do it.
