Yeah I have a 67 Caprice with the stick in the floor w/ bucket seats. Nice car but benches are way more comfy… don’t need to look sporty if you don’t have the 396 or 427 in my opinion keep it a cruiser

I used to have a 67 Impala after high school and had to let it go when I went to college. It was originally a 283 Powerglide and still had original upholstery and paint. I did replace the worn out 282 with a worn out 327 but alas I had no budget for rings and valve guides so it burned oil (it was a salvage yard pull but still better than the 283). Will always love the look of the car, I always wanted to put a 427 in it……with a 5 speed.

He's wrong about the SS option. It was just a trim option. It could be a SS 327, 396 or 427.

I will caution you about painting the car panel by panel. My dad was a body man and would point out cars that this was done to. It can really show if not blended well. You can have the paint lay down differently and it can show especially with pearls, flakes, and certain paint tints. I think the one that was the worst to show this was silver because many have a lot of flake in them and can lay weird if done in different temps or environments. I always thought it was funny that many people could use paint booths to get okay paint jobs but all you need is to clean the space and keep dust and bugs to a minimum. They will try to fly into the paint and then move which destroys that section if left alone. One good practice that dad showed me was not leaving hard lines against the paint in jams. If you bend the tape back gently it will leave a more flared paint and clear line if done correctly. It can also save the interior from overspray many times. It was always fun learning new things from dad and I hope that this project brings you closer to your dads memories and the good times you had together.

FYI - a risk of doing one panel at a time is 1. Overspray, and 2. Color / finish variation. As you mentioned, painting changes with temperature and humidity. So if you paint the RF fender when it is 70 and 40% humidity then a week later when it is 80 and 70% humidity you paint the LF fender, they could look different.

The fact that this one is special to you makes it even better. After watching Ron Finger learn how to paint his Fiero, I'm completely terrified to try painting on my own. I own a 2011 Chev Impala. LOVE the machine. I actually loved all my previous cars (Except the Mazda Protege 323) but the Impala absolutely makes me feel good. LITTLE bit sporty looking, not over bearing, rides really smooth, feels heavy (Which I LIKE) and solid on the road. This thing looks 10 times that, which is AWESOME. I'll be watching this with a lot of interest.

Cannot wait to see more. Love the car and your plans. I've worked on so many cars from this era so I do have a couple recommendations: 1) I'm northern Ohio you probably want an undercoating. Salt will corrode the dream and floor pans but if you park it during winter months, no worries. 2) I would upgrade the radiator and add an oil cooler and you definitely need to source a fan shroud. My Impala had a 350, lots of heat especially in summer months. My radiator sprung a leak, killed the engine 😢 3) It wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade the fan to an electric unit operated by a thermostat that hugs the radiator so you can take that windmill off the water pump. It takes more effort to spin the blade and the pump. It's much more efficient at cooling the engine because the fan speed isn't based on the engine rpms e.g. sitting in traffic, the engine would heat up. 4) Check all the wiring from bumper to bumper. The wire casing can weather and dry rot just sitting. I had to almost completely rewire a '70 Camero because of dry rot. Fun times!
I'm actually excited about your build LOL! Names me wish I lived closer. I would definitely bring my tools and donate some time.

Great car to start with. I love the 67 Impala fastbacks. I have an SS. Personally, I'd keep the bench seat and the shifter on the column. If you want a sportier looking bench seat, find an original "Strato-back" bench seat. It's a bench seat with bucket seat backs and a center fold-down armrest. It was an optional seat in the 67 Impala SS and in the 67 Caprice. I know that the 68 Impala and Caprice also had that seat. Not sure about 69. The Strato-back name comes from the fact that the bucket seats were called Strato buckets, so the bench seat with the bucket seat backs is a Strato-back bench. With the nice big fold-down center armrest, it's very comfortable, as well as looking sporty. And that will look better than a homemade floor console and aftermarket floor shifter, in my opinion. And you can sit next to somebody if you want to 🙂. When a Strato-back bench was used, the factory put some adapter plates on the floor to mount it, because the bolt holes are in a different location than the standard seat. So, unless you get the seat out of a parts car that you could cut the adapter plates out of when you get the seat, you'll have to make your own adapter plates out of some metal stock. Not that difficult to do. White should be an easy color to paint, and can be done panel by panel, unlike a metallic color. The body side moldings are anodized aluminum, so are not chrome. If you want to restore them, there are places that can strip, fix, flaws, buff and re-anodize them. Not cheap, but it's the best way. But, a much more economical way is to do it yourself by removing the anodizing, so you're working on bare aluminum, repair whatever dings and scratches there are, and buff them to a shine. Then just an occasional application of aluminum polish will keep them looking good. You can find some youtube tutorials on aluminum trim repair and buffing. Most of the trim, inside and out, is anodized aluminum on those cars, so it's something good to know how to do. The moldings around the windshields, the vinyl top to body divider trims, and roof rails are stainless, which can also be buffed out to a better shine and can be repaired if needed. There are tutorials on stainless trim repair and buffing on youtube also. Good luck.

Greetings from down in Columbus. Can’t wait to see videos of when you paint it. I have a 1974 1/2 Triumph TR6 that needs to be painted, and I’ve toyed with the idea of painting it myself just as you describe (one panel at a time). I know it is still a bit off in the future, but are you planning on setting up a makeshift paint booth, or just painting it in the open air?

I'm not a vinyl top fan personally... I think you have a great car to start with, it looks pretty darn straight. I am a big fan of non-SS and non-original motor cars; because you have the complete freedom to modify it as you see it without "wreaking the value". True, number matching SS cars have gotten stupid, you can't really drive and enjoy the car. The UA-cam channel "Shop209" has been awesome to watch, he focuses on Novas and might be a good source for late night UA-cam watching.

My first car was a '64 4-door. My dad paid $100 for it and we drove it home. That was '93 or so. I went to school on that car and we never did get around to painting it.

What a cool project. My vote would be to keep the shifter and seats as they are. There are far too many people messing up classic cars these days. I think if would be far better to paint the entire car all at one time. The prep will take you months. Panting will take very little time. Sticking masking all over fairly fresh paint is never a good idea. A little practice on an old fender and you will master it. You can always hire a painter to shoot it if you want it perfect. Good luck with this.
