    What do you think Voiceplay's most elaborate set for a video is?

    • @CynicalTesuji
      @CynicalTesuji 2 місяці тому +17

      In technical terms, I think it has to go to Valhalla Calling, with the seamless background LED screens, amazing makeup, and fantastic Unreal Engine work care of Eli. Although that's essentially a virtual set, so if you want to talk about in-house work, I think the question becomes much more difficult. In the Hall of the Mountain King has extensive makeup, prosthetics and a whole bunch of local trees that Layne dragged into the studio, but Drunken Sailor and The Dragonborn Comes both have a more detailed set, and arguably a more immersive environment. But Trapped: Billie Eilish in 3 Minutes is practically a miniature scary movie, with a cinematography complex enough that it required shooting what is known as a pre-visualisation before filming the actual video. And others would likely argue other videos on their respective merits- all this to say, VoicePlay do all kinds of video magic, and it's all top-tier.

      Those are good answers, but I’d say that Hall of the Mountain King has to be considered also. They actually cut and hauled large tree branches and small trees in to the studio for the forest scene. And when Elizabeth lost a fingernail before they started and they couldn’t find it in all the ground cover on the set, they found a small leaf that resembled her nails and glued it on for the shoot!

    Their 'production crew' is pretty much them, and as for their funding- Patreon and performances. These guys are 100% independent, 100% hands-on, and 1000% talented at this whole music production thing. Geoff or Layne do the majority of their arrangements, they shoot and edit their own vdeos, Eli does lighting, special effects (mostly Unreal Engine) and occasional arrangements, and just about the only things they sub out are extensive prosthetics/makeup, steadycam operation, specialty studios, and final audio mix (that goes to Ed Boyer, who does the same service for PTX and Home Free). That's a big part of what I love about these guys- they are fully rounded artists, not simply singers who perform things other folks created.

    Also, not green screen, it is a painted fabric backdrop. They brought in some potted plants to flesh it out. Disney was so impressed with their arrangement that they hired them to perform it at a large private corporate event.
    They have a Disney playlist, you should check it out together. If you want to stick with Disney, their version of Hellfire from Hunchback of Notre Dame is amazing.

    Actually, they've been around since 1997 😀, they are the oldest among the "four big A cappella groups". 🙂
    And about the "opening an umbrella inside is bad luck", well, you should check their version of "Superstition" 😁😅.
    Moreover... They ARE their "production Company". They're 100% independent, and this allows them to have TOTAL freedom and control over their artistic choices. 🙂
    They do EVERYTHING themselves, from the arrangements to the set, filming, recording, video and audio editing, whatever. The only things they "outsource" are the final audio mixing (Ed Boyer is the guy for this), heavy makeup and prosthetic (Rick Underwood), and sometimes some camera work, especially when they need steady cam movements and stuff of the like. Heck, most of the time they film at Pattycake Production, which is co-owned by Layne Stein and Tony Wakim, another former member of the group who left years ago because he wanted to be on the other side of the camera... 🙂
    Eli usually takes care of the lighting. 🙂
    Nice reaction, see you next time!

      @@AceofBadeReacts That's another good advise, but for a different reason... Sometimes they put something at the end of the video, if you watch "Drunken Sailor" or even more "Halo Theme" you'll see what I mean. 🙂
      It may be another piece of the song (like, the "true ending", as in "Running up that hill"), or some BTS footage, or part of the "karaoke version" of the song (which allow the watcher to better perceive the background harmonies and/or subtleties), or a piece of the group's history (as in "Halo theme", together with the reasons why they made it... Touching), or something funny (like in Geoff's solo version of "Man of constant sorrow) or something else. It's not "always", but it happens 🙂🙂.
      For credits and such, the description is the place to go. 😉

    Layne has a production studio, co-owned with a former member, Tony. They film a lot of their stuff there, but not all. Who ever takes responsibility for writing the arrangement - in this case, Layne - does the initial audio edit, and also has responsibility for the video, including editing. Eli did the lighting, Kathy Castellucci is their production manager. They do most of it themselves. I think this is one of the backdrops Eli did - he creates them with gamer software.

  • @Wildecat10

    Layne did the arrangement for this. In fact, he was working on the arrangement when he had a Zoom call with some of the patrons, and asked our opinion about some things. (They are very interactive with their patrons!)
    Layne ordered Ashley’s clothing from Rent The Runway. Since they always send the size you order and one size larger, they got Geoff to wear the blouse and shorts for the video. (That’s how we found out that Geoff is exactly one women’s size larger than Ashley).
    The backdrop isn’t green screen or painted. Layne wanted to do painted as they did for Little Mermaid, but they were on a tight schedule so he modified the house scene on his computer to appear as though it was painted. And then had it printed on vinyl. To get the flower petals ‘floating’ they used a leaf blower while they were doing that section speeded up. When it was slowed back down the petals floated. And the rat on Geoff was actually a remote controlled ‘Remy’ toy Layne borrowed from his youngest daughter.

      It sounds like there was quite a bit that went into it

  • @janetdw
    @janetdw 2 місяці тому +2

    The production company they use is them. It is true that Layne and Tony Wakim (who used to be one of the baritones) own a production studio and many of their productions are shot there. However if you read the credits- it’s them. They send the final mix out and they will hire a make up artist and steady cam operator if necessary. Otherwise it’s pretty much just them. It is convenient that Layne is part owner of a place where they can film everything. It gives him the opportunity to do the set ups like the lighting the backdrops and the lighting a day ahead. The lighting is generally done by Eli.
    In the video when Ashley’s line got stolen by Geoff (with the flower petals) he was portraying Camilo the Shapeshifter. Most of the time he was channeling what he thought Bruno would be like. But then he portrayed Isabella, the perfect flower child and that’s why the costume change. (When you re-watch, check out everybody’s expressions including Ashley’s when he steals that line🤣.)
    In order to get the flower petals to waft on by and not sink immediately to the ground, they not only used a fan but brought in a leaf blower!
    There is an hilarious video of Geoff and Ashley dancing in their matching outfits(even the pink shorts!!) It’s on Instagram and it’s the second picture in the page so you have to swipe. But it is well worth going out there to check because it is so darn funny.

I didn't see the movie until after seeing this, and the song in the movie seemed rather empty, compared to this. It's not greenscreen, eli is usually responsible for their backdrops. They do quite a few gaming covers! Halo, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed (Valhalla Calling) and they just did a warframe cover (Sleeping in the cold below).
    They have the widest genre range of all the a cappella groups - so to pick something you like should be easy!. They have oodles more Disney songs and Medleys, fabulous Halloween stuff, shanties etc. etc. but their Rock/Alternative covers are my personal favourites.
