- In the early hours of the morning of 4th July 1954, the Mayor of Bay Village, Ohio, received a call from Dr Sam Sheppard, saying his wife had been murdered. The mayor and his wife rushed to Dr Sheppard's home on Westlake Road, and there found Sam Sheppard with a black eye - and Sam's wife, Marilyn, dead. She had been bludgeoned to death in a ferocious attack. When the police arrived they were puzzled: there was no sign of a break-in and items of obvious value had not been taken... They soon began to suspect that all was not as it seemed...

I’m having flashbacks to law school in Tennessee. This is a landmark case studied in all US law schools but not for what you may think. It set the precedent of a Constitutional violation in the event of heavy press coverage speculating as to the guilt of a defendant.
And rightly so. I think Sheppard was guilty but the media circus was appalling.

The police sketch of the bushy-haired man is very disappointing. His hair is nowhere near bushy enough. If I caught sight him at a supermarket, for example, I wouldn't cry out "There goes a bushy-haired man!". As for Sam Sheppard - revolting man - guilty as a puppy sitting next to a pile of poop. Boy did Hollywood whitewash this case! Never heard most of the aspects of the Sheppard family, including his son, his mistress, the drugs and Marilyn's pregnancy 😳 Dying at 46 of self destructive behavior was karma 🤣 Another excellent investigation 👏

That's wild, I was just checking some of my favorite channels to see if anything new was out and I thought "oh man, I haven't seen anything from they got away with murder for quite awhile" so I looked and couldn't believe it's been 4 months since anything new came out (not counting the short story 3 months ago) and literally 15 minutes later this comes up on my feed. Now I have to decide on indulging now or waiting until the grandkids in bed ( he's 7 and hyperactive..lol) and it's quiet and I can really enjoy it.

59:06 yes, i think it's quite plausible that their son sleeping right next door to his mother and the family dog were drugged by Dr.Sheppard. It's a shame Hercule Poirot wasn't available for this case

The Dr Sheppard - murderer - to me sounded like he had a narcassistic Personality , with delusions of grandeur . He didn't recognize boundrys - NY ones , including the dogs & his son . His fury , was lit that night , and his wife , unfortunately paid the price along with the fetus . It was unfortunate also that h was able to return to practicing medicine .

I've heard of this case before but not with as much depth and detail as depicted here. I believe there's a movie about this case. I thought about watching it but Hollywood/Hollyweird skirts the facts often.

Brilliant analysis as always. Bytes of trivia and speculation:
(1) Sheppard's case propelled F. Lee Bailey to the wretched excesses of the celebrity lawyer. Bailey was probably the first modern celebrity lawyer. And, fittingly, he was toxically drunk when he represented Patty Hearst a decade later. The Hearst family did not appreciate it.
(2) For a Cleveland Indians fan (they are now "Guardians") 1954 was the worst possible year to deal with the distraction of a murder indictment. The Indians were not, historically, a distinguished franchise but in 1954, they had the best record of any team in major league history at 111-43. They were then swept by Willie Mays' giants 4-0 in the World Series. So, a manic-depressive delight.
(3) Dr. Sam gets out of jail in 66 and dies of alcohol abuse 4 years later? Granted, you can get some illicit substances in prison but that still represents a Leaving Las Vegas rate of alcohol consumption post-release.
(4) A Goebbels connection, albeit slightly attenuated, is perfect.
(4) DO, not MD. Not that there are conclusive studies proving a relationship between osteopathy and uxoricide; they are at most suggestive. But still, not an MD. Richard Kimble was a proper MD.

Thank you very much, Robert - as always - yes, I was surprised that he should die so quickly of alcohol abuse after a 10 year stint in prison (which I assume must have been a 10 year detox!). He must have been a troubled soul - and an addictive personality.
Just an addition here - dying from an overdose soon after a detox is extremely common. What happens is the addicted person goes back to their drug of choice and takes the same dosage as they used to whilst accustomed to it. Their system has become unused to the high dosage, so has returned to normal levels of sensitivity and can't tolerate it. What used to be a common amount for them has become a lethal dose. See Amy Winehouse (alcohol) and Gram Parsons (heroin) and many, many others.

It occurred to me that this murder happened at the dawn of the Mad Men era, when the sheen of affluent respectability was getting tarnished with gross entitlement and new wild cards like recreational drug use by the middle classes...
I’ve always thought he staged his wife’s clothing much as he ransacked downstairs…..I agree the weapon was that table lamp and it ended up in the lake. And, I suspect, he used it as an anchor for his shirt.

I couldn’t believe I’d never even heard of the case. It was about this lady named Chubbie Miller of England and a little trouble she mad- oops! I mean, found! A little trouble she found in Miami.

Another terrible story excellently told. I wasn't expecting the twist of the potential that he attempted a forced abortion. If that's how it all started then it's the stuff of horror movies. I'm not sure he'd actually try such a thing though. His mother committed suicide after the first trial, and also the father of Marylin killed himself. Many people were killed by this man.

I remember my parent's talking about this case when i was young. There were 2 high profile murders in my hometown of Houston, Tx a few years later where "they got away with it". Socialite Candace Mossler & her young tall handsome nephew were charged with the murder of her husband while he was visiting Miami. They were found not guilty. Another socialite, Joan Robinson Hill died suspiciously & her husband Dr John Hill was highly suspected but not charged. Sometime later he was shot at his front door, most likely at the behest of her angry father Ash Robinson. The doctor got away with it but not for long.
The Joan Robinson Hill case is fascinating and tragic. I have the book about it, Blood and Money.

@TheyGotAwayWithMurder yes...indeed it is Lake Rd, but it may have been referred to as W. Lake Rd. In the past, as Lake Rd passes through numerous towns as "Lake" rd.. some of those towns being further west, calling it anything other than just Lake is rather deceiving. :)

Imo he was a hard core alcoholic and drug user that let his demons get ahold of him. Yes he did it. Why society viewed / views HIM as a victim is sickening.

By today's standards of enquiry he's the prime suspect. Indeed he was even at the time. No forced entry. Injuries sustained by the suspect. Motive. No evidence of a third party at all. Today would provide much better forensic evidence however. A brutal crime.
There was a trail of blood going down the stairs that did not belong to Sam or Marilyn. It belonged to a man , Eberling, who had worked for the family . He later admitted that he had one of Marilyn’s rings.

The movie "The Fugitive" was also based on the popular television series "The Fugitive" starring David Janssen as Richard Kimball.
I believe he was guilty and lucky to serve only 10 years.
The scene featuring the open draws of the chest tell me all I need to convict him of murder...
One sees that whoever opened those draws had concern for the furniture not being damaged...in a true burglary, no such care is evident...Shepard therefore, is the only person with all the attributes necessary of the killer, including physical strength...
Had I been on the jury, I would have voted guilty...
I agree - one of the most shocking things about a burglary is the wanton disregard shown for possessions. My experience has been intruders seem to trash everything...

Dorothy Kilgallen was involved in this case as a journalist and she was also a well known quiz show panelist on What’s My Line in the 50s and 60s. Her death was very strange and I would be interested if you could look into investigating it also to see if she too was murdered or if she really overdosed. She can be seen on UA-cam on old episodes of What’s My Line and she was brilliant.

Dorothy Kilgallen was convinced that Sheppard was innocent and because she was a syndicated journalist whose columns spanned "coast to coast" her stance rankled with the Ohio press who discontinued her column for a while at least. There were very strong opinions and because Kilgallen had already become a household name on "What's My Line" three or four years earlier (and had a radio programme "Breakfast WithDorothy and Dick" (Dick being her husband) for several years before that and she was highly influential. She was actively questioning the findings of the Warren Commission into the assassination of JFK and was promising to publish bombshell findings when she was found dead in her apartment in November 1965 in NYC. There have been numerous questions raised about this. Your broadcast certainly suggests a damning verdict on the Sheppard case that Dorothy would have opposed - intrigue for us to mull over many decades later.

I believe he did kill her. The “fight” on the beach would have given him time and opportunity to dispose of the murder weapon!
or maybe he fought with an assailant. Pretty hard to give yourself a black eye, concussion, broken teeth, oral lacerations and a fractured second cervical vertebrae....
I was sitting here saying that he drugged the little boy is the reason why the little boy slept through the altercation. The dog as well because the dog would have protected the wife. He was just an evil walking demon. He wanted his side chick. She fought him that's how he got that black eye.

Horrible as it is, I think you've hit the nail on the head - he was going force an abortion on his wife, and it all went wrong when she woke up and began to fight

Very similar to Dr jeffrey mcdonald. Same sort of handsome, athletic, popular at school. He killed his whole family and is still in prison protesting his innocence. At least Sam shepherd didn't kill his son, thank God. Definitely guilty. Hence the series THE Fugutve
MacDonald described the murderers as - I’m not kidding - a gang of hippies who were chanting “acid is groovy.” I can’t believe the guy actually has supporters.

Excellent production and summary, Mark, as always!!! I agree with every point you made. Right from the start, I said to myself, Cocaine addict (common in the profession) and a violent drunk (Jekyll/Hyde behavior). I also thought there not being a bedside table and lamp very unusual for the era. I felt that was what she had cracked him in the head with while he was at the other end of her body, head down, making a start at the abortion. It would explain the blow to the back of his cervical spine, which would have enraged him, and grabbing it from her (which may have caused the injuries to her hand as she fought. He then beat her to a pulp. His testimony which displayed utter indifference to not only his wife's demise but his unborn child also marks him as yet another psychopath... narcissistic attitude and no empathy or remorse, a hallmark.
That they never dragged the lake close to shore was a real error. They could have found the lamp. The other thing that surprised me was the sentencing. At that time, in all the States, if a woman was killed while pregnant it automatically became a capital crime, which at that time carried the death penalty if found guilty. It wouldn't matter that it was 2nd degree, what held sway was the death of two souls. Today, the prosecution can try a case as a capital crime and the penalty is death (if that State still allows that penalty) or life in prison without parole. And, being granted another trial in this case is very suspicious of a payoff, in my opinion, to more than just one person. That, due to this miscarriage of justice, another person had to die at his hands while conducting surgery drunk makes this story all the more sad. -- Looking forward to your next episode, Mark!
I'm old and society was different. As a kid I remember adults saying he murdered her, but it was justified because she was pregnant by another man. They didn't care he had mistresses. The past was the worst.
Many thanks for this, Danyel - I agree with all you say here, and you have explained how he received the cervical injury better than I did. I think I shied away from giving too much graphic thought to such a horrific act. It makes perfect sense to me, although we can never have an absolute proof, just a personal conviction!
