It’s wonderful to have you back Mark. I love the way you recount these events, with such detailed analysis and beautiful sketches. These historic crimes would be forgotten for good without your tireless work, and thanks to you these people are in some way, judged again and found guilty.
A new account from you of They Got With Murder has made my Friday evening. It’s redolent of the radio in days not too long ago when programmes worth listening to we’re still being broadcast. Thank you Mark for the work you put into these productions.
Mark's voice would be fantastic on radio. So many on the radio or podcasts have voices that cannot keep my attention. Mark's voice saves my brain from the monotony of many a household chore, listening with my headphones while I vacuum, iron etc. I like that his essays generally last around 50 minutes to an hour, so I can get through tasks and keep track of time🤣
I totally agree, listening to Marks excellent narration & brilliant research of the subject is better than any programme on radio especially radio 4 & 4extra these days.
Thank you for this video. I think the fact that the dog was undisturbed by a stranger is most compelling. BTW, my favorite drawing was the one with the dog putting his paw on Sarah's arm. Bravo!
I do love these late Victorian cases. This channel, this host is the most elegant of them all; period-suitable music, a perfect storybook narration, an excellent and eloquent script. One would never see a documentary as literate and rational as this produced in the drug-addled, pleb-worshipping US. If the local papers of 1893 had published an essay on the case against Noel comparable to the final 15 minutes of this video, the murderer would surely have hung. Very well done.
What a nice surprise to see a new video on this channel! Maybe I am a dreamer but surely not the only one in hoping for a new story every week or so. Many a times I listen to the same stories on the playlist again and again...Mark Maguire has became one of my favorites reading voices . Moreover I enjoy very much his many illustrations. A true artist in every medium. Cheers!
I don't care how long it takes for you to bless us followers with your amazing stories. I'll wait for you. You have a life of your own, as we all do. I appreciate you and the research you do to inform us on the facts of these extraordinary people. Happily listening to you from Texarkana, TX
I thought it was William Noel right off the bat. Just too many domestic murder cases over the centuries. Your work on these cases is exquisite. Your voice/writing is superb for the genre.
Yeah, I'm sure the, "Oh look I came home to find my wife dead and my home burgled, what a tragedy! Well anyways where the ladies at?" has been a tale as old as time.

So lovely to see and hear from you again, Mark! How we have missed you and waited impatiently for another of your wonderful essays! And the link to Julia Wallace, too … my personal obsession! What a great start to the weekend ❤
Holmes : "''consider' the curious incident of the dog. Policeman : the dog did nothing... Holmes: That was the curious incident." The Adventure of Silver Blaze, 1892.
At the end of your narratives I always feel as if I had watched the proceedings unfold - such is the power of your voice and the words you employ. Thank you for all your hard work. ❤
As soon as I heard you mention that the dog had made no sound nor tried to defend Sarah, it brought to mind a phrase Sherlock Holmes uttered...."the curious case of the dog in the night". He, too, was noting that the dog had made no noise nor taken no action. 😇🙏🌈
I saw this come in on Friday, but decided to wait until today (Saturday)...when the maid had left, and the dog had been fed, and I'd returned from the public library where I talked with several people of my acquaintance who could vouch for my presence there. There was that little trouble with the locked door though...(Thoroughly enjoyed your telling Mark!)
John Dickson Carr's locked-room detective Gideon Fell lived at no. 1 Adelphi Terrace. I started reading the series in 1965, and still do. I met Carr in 1968. He often based his mysteries on notable murders. Glad you're back. You perfectly capture the lore and lure of the English murder. (I'm a Yank) On an adjacent topic, you might enjoy Victorian Painting by Lambourne, the best single book on the art of that era.

Woohoo it's the Mastereo! Yes🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉now time to listen! Very much appreciated and worth the wait! Yes the husband did it! That's why the dog didn't bark. He's poor devoted unsuspecting wife! Again bravo great job Mastereo! Another one soon I pray.🙂
Thank you MJM, for dropping another gr8 true crime essay. It's good to know you're keeping busy & in good health. Take care of you & the ones you love🤗
There is red flags everywhere in this case , he definitely did this , a marriage with no arguments 😂, the locked door, making sure of his alibi and having people around him when trying to get in the house, the dog , having another man go in the window,o lord and the many women 🧐, the list goes on and on , thank you Mark for sharing this, as you can tell I love your channel mark , so happy your back, made my Friday night ❤❤❤
That's nice - and I agree, Brenda - there are just too many red flags to ignore in this case, even if the actual evidence does not make it easy to prosecute. Many thanks!
lol. Yes - no arguments - BIG red flag, cos someone's going to explode at some point. Hubby and I don't have big arguments but we still have misunderstandings that can get stuck and go in circles and we get mad. lol.
Hello Mark, It is always exciting to receive a video from you. This is an intriguing and interesting case and it seems to me that it was so well planned by Noel, especially his use of a gun rather than a knife, which would have made it necessary for him to take time to clean himself before going out. Although in his hurry he didn’t do enough to make it look more like a robbery by not taking a lot of things that a thief would have taken. He was clever in the way he drew attention to the fact that he couldn’t get in to the house and getting witnesses to this. Your voice is so calm and such a joy to listen to. Thank you for this latest video. I hope that you are keeping well. Until next time. 🙂💚✌️
The heartlessness of the times is usually not put straight to audiences as MJM has done in this essay. All these years later, the telling of the tale makes me shiver. Always a wonderful treat to find another video on my favorite channel.
How wonderful to have another story. As another viewer remarked, it takes me back to childhood, listening to the wireless. It`s so relaxing hearing someone telling a story, quietly, without loud commercials spoiling the moment. Thank you very much for the time you take making these videos. I look forward to them.
Great ,loved it. I like the way you highlighted him steering his observer around the house avoiding the unmolested room, showing him the bits he wanted. And pointing his finger back at himself . 👏
Hello, Mark, it's so very good to hear your voice again and to know that you are doing well. We have missed you and the stories you bring us, but it's quite exciting to think of you writing away, creating more journeys back in time to entertain us. Listening to you is like being with an old friend and a cup of tea. Notwithstanding the subject matter, there's a comfort in the familiarity of your voice and the perquisite of having one's life touched by a man such as yourself, of many talents and intrigues. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. May you enjoy many more years of well-being and happiness.
What a delight to find this new video from you! Thank you! Your research and writing of these events takes a great deal of time and effort, and so many of us very much enjoy and appreciate that you continue to use your gifts - which include some wonderful artwork!-on your UA-cam channel! Because it simply could not be avoided if you follow the news in the USA, one feature of this story struck me immediately as having one thing in common with the current case of Alex Murdaugh of South Carolina, who was just convicted of murdering his wife and youngest son. The Murdaugh murders took place at the dog kennels of the large, isolated country hunting property where the Murdaugh family home was located.. The murdered spouse, “Maggie” Murdaugh, kept her beloved personal dogs there. Unbelievably, a short video was taken by the soon to be deceased son Paul Murdaugh, literally just a few minutes from when forensic evidence determined the victims had died. The defense claimed that although Alex Murdaugh admitted he had been at the dog kennels (because he had been caught out by the time stamped cell phone video, and admitted to being there in proximity of the murders only AFTER he was caught out!)- I wondered why Maggie’s dogs were not heard barking?? This property was way off the beaten path, so persons unknown had to be there when the murders took place. They couldn’t just nip up from a nearby street and commit murder! They had to have been there! I know dogs. Anyone who knows dogs knows that if any strangers were near those kennels, especially if the dogs sensed trouble!-they would be barking their heads off! Just as in this Victorian era case, the dogs didn’t bark. They didn’t bark because they were comfortable with the murderer, the spouse of their mistress. Unlike people evidence, which is often flawed, you can always count on canine evidence, and Maggie’s dogs had told people from the start that no strangers were on that property! I just got you some coffee! Enjoy!
Thank you, Polly - I am very grateful to you! I wasn't aware of the details of the Murdaugh case - although it appears to have captured international headlines. Thank you for filling me in on this - yes dogs would react to an attack (or even the presence) of a malign stranger... The only circumstance which would cause them considerable confusion, I imagine, is that in which one of their owners killed another...
What a joy to see your latest story on my page! Your cases are always so convoluted, as the culprit is never brought to justice and we need to find out why. You present and read them so well -- thank you!
Wonderful storyteller. It's always a treat to experience one of your tales from the world of historical crimes and punishments. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you so much for all the work, the time and attention you give to writing and narrating these stories for our good pleasure. Can't say how much I appreciate all that you do!
I can't remember how I first arrived at They Got Away With Murder, but I'm so glad I did. Mark's selections of historic cases shows how widely-read he is. His presentation is faultless: no silly music, the videos have clever (but not extravagent) use of illustration/caption, and his articulacy and accurate diction quietly reigns supreme. There's not a word superfluous. This is my second watch of this one before comment, so compelling is Mark's sonorous voice - like the creak of an antique bureau varnished with shellac, or the resonant purr of a 1930s Bakelite wireless. Great work Mark - don't do anything else, just keep doing what you are!
You made me laugh, Chris - and shellac in French polish? You are a connoisseur of fine thing! My father used to restore furniture after he retired, and used to melt down old 78 RPMs to obtain shellac! Thank you for your kind words!
I can add to that, also, Mark!; I remember my grandmother explaining how in the 1920s she used to fashion 78 r.p.m. records into crenellated flowerpots by softening them in the stove for a while, then shaping frilly edges. Keep up your splendid work! You're good!! @@TheyGotAwayWithMurder
@@chrissandi9613 I recall doing this with my mother when I was a child! She would ask my father for one of his 78s and then with some effort he would find one - she would put them in the oven and, as you say, the edges would be "frilly" to allow for the record to fold inwards! I must ask my mother where she had seen this done!
I remember your narrative about Wallace, you told us about a few months ago & it is eerily similar to this murder. I can imagine others will & have tried to emulate these murders & not got away with it. It wouldn't surprise me if Noel had read or heard about something like this himself, the fiend.
Another excellent episode. It is so unfair that some get away with murder and people such as Derek Bentley and Timothy Evans were innocent, but murdered by the State.
How truly sad - Sarah who genuinely loved him , betrayed in such a vile manner especially after she and her family had been of such enormous help to him. You have to wonder why he kept the purse , God only knows . Thank you for another superbly elegant presentation.
Delighted that you've been writing etc...just one problem...so many of us have become big fans of your channel and we want to see more of you more frequently...truly, you have a sensational, engaging format... Thank you...
I don't understand Judge Grantham's position that the case was so weak it 'should never have been bound over for trial' 😕 since the evidence was more than enough to convict him! Thanks for sharing and narrating this most unfortunate case. Cheers Mark!
As always, an absolute pleasure to receive this notification. It always bring a warm smile to myself as I know that I will enjoy the narrative and it’s storyteller. MJM, we salute you 😊👏
Hurrah! The best notification in my feed. Ever. I love your stuff. Fascinating, well researched, superb illustrations, excellent narration. What more can I say? Makes my day when you release a new video Mark. If it wasn't just me, the dog and Universal Credit I would contribute financially but one of us would go hungry. You're almost worth it but sorry, not quite. 😜
I wish you all the best with your publishing’s! I discovered you tonight when it was meant to be I get the feeling! Murder mystery’s have made me more used to true crime but I had to have a steppingstone…. Novels and movies based on true stories! I am now ready for the next step and the fact that this happened so long ago makes it easier! This is someone who never watch’s the news because it’s so depressing so that will tell you what kind of person I am but murder mystery’s are fascinating and so are true stories so there you go…. Blessings from your newest fan in London! May all your hearts desires manifest in perfect divine timing!🙏🌟 🌹🕊🤍🕊🌹
Welcome back, Mr Maguire, I shall race through today's chores now with renewed purpose knowing that a new essay has arrived. It's like being at "the Front" and receiving a letter from home. Anyway, enough gossip, I must " Suit Up" to go into battle with the encroaching undergrowth.....well, I might just listen to your introduction and pray for rain.....Regards.
Utterly brilliant as usual and a special treat for Sunday afternoon. Thank you so much for these truly enjoyable videos. Look forward, very much, to the book.
Thank you so much Mark! I love your storytelling and analysis. It’s like you open up the past so we feel we can inhabit their world fleetingly. Very special. Take care! 🌈😀
If there's anything better than these fascinating stories, it's the voice of the riveting narrator.

I watch them twice too. Besides ppl did recycle so well in the past
Yes, it is by no means a perfect system, Susannah...
How truly sad - Sarah who genuinely loved him , betrayed in such a vile manner especially after she and her family had been of such enormous help to him. You have to wonder why he kept the purse , God only knows . Thank you for another superbly elegant presentation.
I agree - thank you, Anton.
Great Friday night and a story from you 😍❤
Thank you, Linda - it is my pleasure!
Your the best..love, love your way of telling these wonderful old mystery.
Thank you - I am delighted that you do, Terry!
Delighted that you've been writing etc...just one problem...so many of us have become big fans of your channel and we want to see more of you more frequently...truly, you have a sensational, engaging format...
Thank you...
Thank you - I will try not to keep you waiting so long for the next one!

Good to see you back Mark, just love your research and voice and the stories are riveting 🏴🇬🇧✌️
Thank you kindly, John!
I don't understand Judge Grantham's position that the case was so weak it 'should never have been bound over for trial' 😕 since the evidence was more than enough to convict him!
Thanks for sharing and narrating this most unfortunate case. Cheers Mark!
You are welcome - thank you!
But it wasn’t. All the evidence presented was circumstantial, which is not enough for a conviction.
@@magesalmanac6424 many people have been convicted on circumstantial evidence. It's still evidence.
Have you an example of such a case?
@@didds1000 State of New York vs. Covlin, found guilty in 2019 I think.
What an amazing end to a Friday!! Curling up and listening to such a wonderfully told case. Thank you, just thank you

Your kind comment is quite sufficient - thank you, Amanda!
May all your hearts desires manifest in perfect divine timing!🙏🌟

It's like being at "the Front" and receiving a letter from home.
Anyway, enough gossip, I must " Suit Up" to go into battle with the encroaching undergrowth.....well, I might just listen to your introduction and pray for rain.....Regards.
