    When I was training in R22s one of the common training routes had you transit military airspace and airfield. I was always amused by the controllers telling me to avoid the F16s in the pattern. I wanted to tell them I couldn't avoid anything this traffic wanted to do if I tried.
    I did get to cross midfield when a B52 was landing below me once. And got to see the USAF thunderbirds in the pattern below as I puttered by.
    One of my last flights at that field I was departing the mil airspace and an H60 pulled up alongside me and waved. I called the tower to ask if I was doing anything wrong he said "nope he just wanted to say hello." Was awesome.

    I still can't go over that it's normal practice to clear the number two to land when the number one has not even landed. Why not clear them for the approach and automatic go around at 500 feet unless cleared once the runway is empty or something?
    In this case, the number 2 was on visual approach, but still... If the 150 got stuck on the runway and the 767 landed on them, wouldn't ATC have at least some blame?

    • @rtbrtb_dutchy4183
      @rtbrtb_dutchy4183 Місяць тому +1

      Just because you are cleared to land, doesn’t mean it can’t be cancelled. This is just silly. It makes absolutely no difference at all. If the 150 gets stuck on the runway, you think they all going to think: “oh well, fedex is cleared to land, nothing we can do now”?

    • @rtbrtb_dutchy4183
      @rtbrtb_dutchy4183 Місяць тому +1

      @@owensparks5013 has zero to do with being lax. Just because it’s different, doesn’t make it lax or unsafe.
      In other countries, you can get a clearance to “line up after…”. Meaning an airplane is still flying towards the runway and you as a pilot, have to see that plane go by and then you can line up. This is not done in the USA. Should we call this lax?
      Also, at certain Airports, you can be cleared to land and can actually touch down while another airplane is still on the runway. Here is the procedure for Heathrow:
      LAND AFTER" PROCEDURE
      Normally, only one ACFT is permitted to land or take-off on the RWY-in-use at
      any one time. However, when the traffic sequence is two successive landing
      ACFT, the second one may be allowed to land before the first one has vacated the
      RWY-in-use,
      This is also a big no-no in the USA. Should we call this a case of lax in the UK?
      By the way, this “Land after” procedure means you get cleared before the other aircraft has landed…..which you said wasn’t happening outside the US.
