Because of the size difference in the spools, reel vs new line spool, you will get line twist if you keep spool label up. Just watch the loop coils as you're loading the reel. When you see the coils getting smaller just flip the spool. I do it with my feet. Just keep alternating the spool, label up and label down. Have done it this way for years and don't have a problem with line twist. I hope this helps someone. Great tip on the warm water. I never knew. Tight lines brothers.
Great tip been doing it like that for 20 plus years, I do place the spool of line in water while I load the spool, and keep tension with my fingers you get a little wet but you end up with a well loaded reel. Enjoy your videos

Great. Just be aware that if you are reeling it up make sure if the line is twisting flip your spool over. I have learned since I made this video that the label up is not always true.
The part where you said “no matter what type of line it is, as long as you have the label pointed to the sky, it will come off the proper way” is entirely false. Depending on the manufacturer line is spooled in different directions. Although most are spooled the same, some are not, I’ve seen it. The key is that you want the line to come off counter clockwise.
@@stevestumbaugh8982 this clockwise tip is great but, clockwise on the reel looking from where? I just now see that it's looking from handle through reel to spool. Gotta go wind up a new reel.

Exactly Redline. Not all manufacturers are alike. Case in point I just spooled on some 6 lb trilene, the line is supposed to come off the Spool in the counterclockwise rotation, the label is facing towards my bed. The correct way of saying it is the line is supposed to come off counter-clockwise, nothing to do with the label. Mike Iaconelli and others will tell ya the same 😅
@@hardrockminer-50 Looking from the rod tip at the spool end of the reel. If the bail turns clockwise the line spool should lay on whichever end that has the line coming off counterclockwise.
i have seen so many vids on how they think a proper spooling should be done and no way to tell what is the correct method, but a thought came to mind that i can spool line on my reel any way and then when im done simply get a large bearing snap swivel and attach my line to it and use the snap to attach it to a fence and then start walking back and unspooling it all the way ,then slowly put a bit of tension on the whole length of line and let go a few time then start spooling it all back on, i believe this helps stretch the memory out and the bearing swivel removes any twist on the entire line so that the whole length of it is straight without twist before you start reeling it in, and after that you can always dunk the spool in hot water and leave it till it cools down or leave it in there for a few days which helps to remove memory and like you said shape it to that diameter,, let me know what you think about using the snap swivel like that

Hello! your tutorial helped me solve the problem, very easy and practice , thank you so much , greetings from Chile . Pd. the color reel is very elegant .
I appreciate the detailed explanation. I have fished 30+ years with baitcast, Zebco's and fly reels. I recently bought a spinning reel and spooled it just as one would a baitcaster. Got to the lake and within 10 minutes I was cussing it due to twisted line. Now I'm going outside to get it from the building and re-spool it. Thanks.
Curious if it wouldn't be better to do the stretch task prior to the warm water normalization. Wouldn't the stretch task negatively affect the 'curl' diameter you just created? I appreciate what I just learned from your video and will be using your recommendations, this afternoon in fact. Thanks for taking the time to record and post.
THANK YOU!!!! After taking many years off from fishing, mostly because everything I had was stolen so many years ago it disgusted me, I got back into with spinning reels last year. Towards the end of the year I was having some horrible line issues to which I would strip some line off and start over. I was raised on bait casters and wished I hadn’t picked up a spinning reel, but I did enjoy it a little more until the headaches started to remind me.
I get a piece of wood with a nail in it, put the spool on the nail laying on the floor. Thread the line through all the eyes. When I'm reeling I lay a book on the line and reel it in naturally and never had a problem.
That's not a bad idea. I usually just have my gf or cousin or someone stick a pencil through and put tension on the line spool in-between there fingers. then reel it in normal. Then depending if they need to or not have them add or release tension on how tight theyre squeezing the line spool
Man I never knew about any of these tips. I haven't used spinning reels that much and the main reasons are because of the problems you've shown how to avoid here. Gonna have to give these a try. Thanks for sharing this information bro.
The problems dont exist. Just have the spool revolving on something. Seriously. These American spooling videos have become a bit of a meme in the tackle store I work in.
I have, on multiple occasions, seen supply spools (what you buy at the store when you get fishing line) loaded backwards. Most of them seemed to be large spools, like what is used by tackle shops. So, always check the direction the line is coming off the spool. Usually, you'll want the label facing up. But, not always. I think a lot of spools used by tackle shops are loaded differently, but I don't know why.
Good video, I agree from experience if the line does not come off the spool with the same rotation as the reel it will tend to birdcage and you have a mess, especially if there is any slack on the cast. If you spool in the wrong direction then you can usually put a heavy weight on the line and cast as far as you can, then it tends to reel back on correctly.
Dont depend on the spool label to be on the same side of the spool for all lines. Pay attention so the line comes off of the spool the same direction that it will be loaded onto your reel. The Hot Water trick will help set your line to the smaller spool of your reel.
Yes, once in a while they mess up on this! Also, if I see a twist set in, I will flip the spool for a few turns to reverse it. The line spool is a bigger diameter than your reel so a little twist can set in. The hot water trick is a good one that I will try - will reduce birds nests from line coming off the reel by itself.
if you have a boat, you can put it on any way it comes off the spool. All you have to do is let the line off the reel out behind the boat with nothen tied to it as you idle. Let pretty much all the line out and drag it behind the boat for a couple minutes and then reel it back on. The line will be completely straight no twist what so ever. Its good to do this every so often and you will never have trouble with twist.
Actually I used an old reel and spoiled it up with a towel. Then I hooked up the end to the actual reel which is the final destination to this line, set up brake on the old reel, this way when I roll it up, it will be the perfect tightness along the whole line.
Actually I would find a football field or something and walk it all off in a straight line, tie a swivel to the end and a leader to the swivel, have someone hold the lead and reel them in while running the line through your fingers, that should get most of the twist out.
Hey man, thanks for helping get me started up with my rods this season. I love the way you explain things. So simple and straight up. You made me laugh a lot with the funny was you say things! Anyway, have a great fishing season and good luck out there!
All I could think of when watching this video was when we bought the new reel for one of the kids and had the shop put it on. Then having to walk ALL the line out so we could reel it up correctly. Fun times.
Label up doesn’t always work. Some companies coil counter clockwise and some coil clockwise. And there are occasions that you could get a spool from the same brand weight and all and the sticker is on the wrong side.
I wouldnt go by labels, just make sure it comes of ccw. I like to throw my spool in a container of hot water and spool it that way. Dont need anyone to hold it or worry about line twist.
Even tension is best done with another reel . Set it up so that your line goes from the spool , takes three turns around the slave reel then onto the reel you want to load . Line every thing up and set the drag on the slave reel so when the line is loading onto the reel you want to fill it's a perfect even tension . Set the tension correctly and it stretches the line while you're at it ..no water , no stretching required later , job done in one hit .
Good timing on this video. I bought a brand new spool for this year and it has the worst memory I've ever had. To make matters worse, I'm going down to a 1000 size reel this year so the spool size is even smaller. I just respooled it and I'm trying the warm water trick. We'll see how it goes...
If you line gets twist after fishing awhile cut bait off and as you idle boat let line out behind you. In half mile it will take all twist out of line. Works every time.
The way I do it it don`t matter how the line comes off the filler spool I soak the filler spool first a few times in warm water before it is put on the reel spool all so use a warm wet cloth as back up to get the line on tight , that way it gets the reel spool memory as it is going on
Hi. I just got a new Shimano FX1000 ultralight. I got 10lb and 12lb fishing line for my Ugly Stick GX2. Does it really make a difference if I use thicker fishing line on an ultralight? I'm still going to buy some 6lb line for it but I was wondering.. If you were stranded on an island and all you had were ultralight fishing poles and 12lb line, I feel like it would still work. I'm going to buy the 6lb line tomorrow.
It will definitely make a difference. That setup will not cast and function as well with that heavier line. That being said if I was stranded on an island I would use whatever I could get ahold of.
What size president reel is that. That looks like the size I want for a new ultralight (light duty) and have heard great things about that model. Also cool hot water trick I'll have to try that next time I use non braided line.
Good video with one or two exceptions. So, a possibly stupid question from a 50+ year Bass/Crappie angler who uses spinning and baitcasting gear on an almost equal basis. If you used the warm water to "Reset" the line memory from the larger diameter of the filler spool to the smaller diameter of the reel spool, why the last tip of stretching the line? And is that stretching of the line merely the last 12", or a longer or shorter distance? What purpose does stretching that segment of the line serve, unless you feel that it helps when tying on a lure or terminal tackle. Either way, it should be stated, because if it assists in tying on, shouldn't you mentiion that this is recommended before all reties as well? and wouldn't you cut that section off to remove the kink made by the line holder on the spool? I always do, anyway. One other point, the label pointing up has not always proven to work for this veteran fisherman, for some reason I have found that the label down works as well because it is not the label that matters, but the rotation that the line is flowing off of the filler spool and onto the reel spool. No matter which way the label faces, the line MUST uncoil counter-clockwise (right to left in front of the reel) if the line goes on the reel counter-clockwise (right to left viewed from behind the reel), and clockwise off the filler spool if clockwise on to the reel spool. Case in point, my Mitchell 300 winds line on with a clockwise rotation (viewed from behind), and my Okuma AV40 winds line on with a counter- clockwise rotation. If the "spool label UP" were set in stone, then many angler's reels would be spooled backward, or would be if they proceeded to spool on the loops and twists onto the reel while simultaneously cussing the proceedure. I seem to recall a couple of Tsunami spinning reels I had in the past which loaded clockwise also, maybe not, been a lot of years ago. But I still have my 300 here now, and if I loaded it as you stated, I'd prolly be cussing you as well as the reel. But fortunately I go by the rule I learned many years ago, "Off the filler spool in the same direction as on to the reel spool", and even that doesn't relieve 100% of line twist, but it's a heck of a lot better. Spinning reels "create" twist naturally. This is inherent because the line (under load from retreiving lures and landing fish) cannot turn 100% freely, even when a swivel is used, and most anglers tie directly to the the tackle or at best to a snap or split ring (I use a Duo-Loc snap most of the time myself). Even the minimal "load" or "drag" created by a lure will cause a small amount of line twist because the line is not spooled in parallel, but rather at 90° which causes an opposing rotation by the bail, and thusly some amount of "twist" is the result. There is currently no way around that fact. But if you can figure that one out, you're sure to be a rich person.
The warm water and the “stretching of the line are both helpful in reducing line memory. The stretching is just for that. As far as the label up or down, you are correct. I had always done it label up and it always was the correct direction, I have found some that are not spooled that way though since.
The line should be coming off the spool in the same direction your reel spins! I’ve had line that cane off counter clock wise, so I had to lay the spool down upside down bc my reel spins clock wise
I have a spinning reel and baitcaster, I like that tip, going to use it. I have a question, if I use braided line on spinning reel, do I need to put spool in water like you did the mono?
Please watch this video . Both strengths and trilene have lines that come off clockwise and counterclockwise. And when putting line on a bait caster with a pencil. The line should come off the top. It was not mentioned in the video. "The obvious is not always apparent to everyone". When looking at the top of the spool. The bail goes around clockwise on 99.999% of modern reals. Set spool on table top so line comes off ccw
Yep do it yourself ... this year was the first time I paid Bass Pro shop to do 2 new reels. I can hardly believe it, it literally springs off the reel! *I will never let anybody do it again ... and there going to get a peace of my mind!!!* Pretty much ruin my first day out today. I'll try the warm water dunk and remove some of the line they put way too much line on the reel. If that doesn't I guess I'll to get new line.

I just run it through the first eyelet of my pole so I don’t have to hold it as I’m reeling it on
I run it thru all my eyes!
How do you get the spool to magically not jump around like a cracked out Chihuahua.
I think you should still hold it to keep some tension on it
@@skrimdog6151 bruh lmao
Having the label up is not correct in all circumstances. The line needs to come off counter clockwise.
Yeah, I listened to this vidoe about spool up and incorrectly spooled my reel with spider wire ez fluro.
It really doesn't matter which direction the label is going, so long as the line gets on the reel....
The line should be coming off the spool in the same direction your reel spins! I’ve had line that cane off counter clock wise, so I had to lay the spool down upside down bc my reel spins clock wise
Heat gun will put that label on the other side reel quick.

I have a spinning reel and baitcaster, I like that tip, going to use it. I have a question, if I use braided line on spinning reel, do I need to put spool in water like you did the mono?
No need on the braid
@@MidwestBassHunter Thanks
Very well explained. Thanks
You bet
Great vid! Also like how you have the same reel that I just bought! :-)
It’s a great reel
Looks like a pflueger president possibly on a fenwick rod?
Thanks very helpful and informative.
You bet!
man yeah, gonna have to try this..
It works
Can you put braid in warm water?
Sure but there is no need to, braid has no memory so it won’t do anything.
Awesome video!
Thanks
Who plays the music at the beginning ?
Just watched your video again. Quick question, how long would you suggest the spool be left in the water?.
I do about five minutes
@@MidwestBassHunter Cheers.
Great video
Thanks
One question why do you use the towel is it too keep it from curling and how many mins do you put the line in the warm water?
I use the towel so I can keep good pressure on the line without burning my fingers. 2-3 minutes on the water trick.
Midwest Bass Hunter thank you this is prob the best channel I watched on UA-cam
Please watch this video .
Both strengths and trilene have lines that come off clockwise and counterclockwise.
And when putting line on a bait caster with a pencil. The line should come off the top.
It was not mentioned in the video.
"The obvious is not always apparent to everyone".
When looking at the top of the spool. The bail goes around clockwise on 99.999% of modern reals. Set spool on table top so line comes off ccw
👍
I've slipped on the max capacity banana peel before. That extra space is a good idea.
Yes it is.
If you have 8-10lb braid do you want to do this?
Everything but the water. Don’t need water with braid as the line has no memory.
Great tips!
👍
They're not great tips .Theres no problem just having the line revolving on something. Seriously.
Subbed as soon as I saw iowa
Legit!
Always best to do it yourself
Thanks for the video!
👍
Stren and Pflueger same setup I have except i have the president xt
I use this for trout fishing and finesse bass fishing, great setup.
Great video. Very descriptive and nice close ups. Going to try this out today on my new reel.
Good luck, if you have the spool label up make sure the line is coming off the spool counter clockwise, if its not just flip it over. Thanks for watching!
Awesome stuff! I’ll remember to do the water trick!
It's crazy that it works but it does!
Makes total sense! Appreciate it!
Good video but lable up doesn't always work I've had the line come off the backside of the spool always check and make sure which way the line comes off
Should the line come off clockwise or counter clockwise?
@@mikeallen1978 counter clockwise
It depends how your reel turns. If it turns clockwise than the line must come counterclockwise from the spool and vice versa
Would it be okay to leave the reel and the line in warm water for a couple hours or no?
But this helped me a lot.
I don’t think it’s necessary to do that.
Should I it in warm water every time before a fishing session?
No, only when you put new line on.
No, thank you for your knowledge and time
Any time
Excellent video ! Also .....hot damn what camera did you use for this video ?
Thanks, I used my cell phone
Those pfluger reels are good dang reels
Yes they are
