- Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by business editor at The Spectator Martin Vander Weyer to discuss former Post Office boss Paula Vennells' second day of evidence at the Horizon IT inquiry.
Ms Vennells on Thursday claimed she had no inkling subpostmaster convictions were unsafe in 2013 despite a “concerning” email from lead campaigner Alan Bates.
Martin tells Julia that there is “nothing” Ms Vennells “can say to redeem her position”. He thinks bosses were “under a delusion” that subpostmasters were taking money from their branches over realising that the Horizon system was faulty.

Her memory fails her at all the 'right' moments - at other times her recall is crystal clear. I do think she believes her own hype, and thinks she is a caring person - but she is actually arrogant, ruthless and incompetent. The iron hand in the velvet glove. Despicable.

Corrupt. And that s the best I can find. Her crocodile tears were so false. She knew for years on this corrupt practice. Time she was in jail. Her tears cannot bring people who sadly killed themselves cannot be brought back. She will be looked after by the corrupt system we have allowed to become the norm.
They spent £100 million fighting against postmasters they knew to be innocent. Now the post office is up for sale. 😮
She should have her pension removed .

Obviously Vennels was judging sub postmasters by her own very poor values.

I wish I was in a job where I didn’t have to know anything & got an obscene amount of money. In 2018 she ‘earned’ £718,300 which equates to £59,858 per month. It’s outrageous! No wonder the price of stamps keeps going up.

Her problem is that she should have found out. That is what you do as CEO. You drag people into your office and make sure that they tell you the truth, and if you can’t get a straight answer, you then go looking for someone on the outside who will find out.

It is quite clear that senior Post Office personnel were well aware of Horizon faults, got their legal team to cover it up by continuing to prosecute sub postmasters in order to deflect blame for a lousy, corrupt and hugely expensive computer system that they should never have sanctioned in the first place. The Post Office was essentially insolvent at this time and ditching Horizon would have been catastrophic. Vennells and others must be prosecuted.
So when are the court cases starting, got the employees into court quick enough though
Fujitsu need to be forced to pay the compensation.Their product was faulty - simple.

Nothing will ever convince me that she wasn't complicit in this whole scandal right from the word go. Every single one of those poor people were told that "they were the only ones this was happening to"when she and her people knew that it was a computer fault at their end and it was widespread. She should go to prison. Also every person who was affected by this should get a million pounds in compensation.
I thought her performance on Wednesday was bad. Today's, however, was on a totally different level.

Thanks Julia. What puzzles me is that Vennells did not trust her employees. But the 1st thing Vennells to review would have been PO Branch financial audits; if these showed widespread theft, then there may have been reason to pursue these other charges. But paying in excess of 5 million pounds to a CEO who, faced with written evidence, states that I can't recall that is pitiful. After she is jailed for criminal negligence causing suicide, the investigation must target the board members & senior executives who were complicit in this travesty of justice. All the victims MUST RECIEVE FAIR & JUST COMPENSATION.
Reputation is irrelevant . People want blood and justice .

She was upset that after years of covering up, protecting her back, lying to save face she has finally been forced to face up to her wrongdoing. She doesn't like it, especially as it has been made public. She is responsible for totally destroying and ruining hundreds of people's lives, for driving people to suicide, blighting forever many children's lives. If she had an ounce of decency she would never have done what she did. She should have said there is something wrong here and investigated it properly, halting all prosecutions until such time as the situation was fully understood. She didn't.
Paula Vennells DID the job well. Her bosses wanted the ‘image’ of a successful Horizon computer system; they wanted an ‘image’ of a ‘profitable’ POST OFFICE. She accepted the position which was supposed to accomplish that. However, no one was willing to accept reality!☹️🤔🤬
Dishonesty and incompetence in sub-post offices has always been a major problem. That's why they have always been rigorously and regularly inspected.

If true, this is something that should be examined and you should pass all the evidence to the enquiry.

Clearly, there has been appalling treatment meted out to many unfortunate victims of this affair and the subsequent cover-up is disgraceful - as is the level of moral cowardice displayed by Vennells. However, the media would have us believe that all sub-postmasters are paragons of virtue. This is simply not the case; they are ordinary human beings and are prey to all the failings that afflict the rest of us.
It's quite amazing how many of these high-flying people who are paid very big salary's because they're supposed to be very intelligent have such bad memories.
She is completely out of her depth, has absolutely no compassion, it is obvious she is faking tears. Her arrogance & incompetence is breathtaking!

We all know nobody is going to prison for this vile crime! Those under Paula Vennells will deny everything and no-one can prove anything. Meanwhile the victims suffer on and on and on! These people are not very clever. Corporate life brings creeping sense of entitlement and detachment. It ends up in this sort of fiasco.
I know an elderly lady who worked as a sub postmaster many, many years ago. Her recollection is the management's attitude was the same then. They could not accept that they could make mistakes. She resigned, primarily due to the toxic attitude prevalent within the upper management.

There is only one way forwards, a personal appearance at the Supreme Court owning up. Not the Appeals Court, Justice has been systematically perverted and an instruction must be passed down to find every accused innocent and every conviction stricken from the record. Then compensation is due.

If she was truly sorry, she and her cohorts should give back all the bonuses they received for the period, and surrender their pensions. And, if they won't do this voluntarily then they should be forced by being sued.
Paula Vennells' blind prejudice has resulted in time and effort wasted, as well as hundreds of millions of pounds that could have been very much better spent elsewhere.

Vennels should face prosecution, and if convicted, a prison sentence would be appropriate. Karma.
She is evil. She is only upset because she has been caught out...like a rabbit in headlamps with nowhere to hide. Her words demonstrate she is evil, a massive liar and she MUST be jailed for a crime that brought about distress, marriage breakups, imprisonment and eventually suicide. She, along with undoubtedly numerous others, has to be held responsible for those eventualities.
Day 142 Paula Vennells said "I don't recall" 10 times Day 143 she said "I don't recall" 16 times.
She IS being scapegoated. There are people far higher than her that are being let off the hook.

Everty CEO is respomsible for the overall budget of a business. Vennells apparently knew nothing about the legal dept budget or the security dept budget which would have been incurring extraordianry costs for according to her doing nothing , certainly not investigating and prosecutings hundred of emplotyees . Those depts would have been proud of their successes and would have passed up that info to their Board so that their dept heads would have got their bonuses

If there is to be any justice this woman would face prosecution. But we know that isn’t going to happen of course. People like her get paid vast sums and get away with flagrant dishonesty and gross incompetence without sanction. This is the way life is here in the UK.
That's a good point Julia raises, that the PO management thought the new Horizon system was catching fraud that the previous system was not. They had tunnel vision that the new system could not be faulty. This highlights their total lack of experience of implementing a new IT system. This is why Julia is a superior reporter.

the post office management pointed the finger at the postmasters and relentlessly prosecuted
the profits of post office went up.

Martin seems to think that they really did believe that what they were doing was just! I couldn’t disagree more. There’s too much evidence to show that they deliberately covered up what they knew. His comments actually make me wonder what connections he has with the managers of the post office, a very sympathetic view of these psychopaths.
Vennals should pay her salary of £5.1 million back to us the tax payers and government for her incompetence and awful direction pathetic attitude toward the Post Masters plus she should be jailed too!!
