  • Vintage Paperback Book Repair - Restoring Corgi Crime Classics - Unintentional ASMR!
    In this video I clean, repair and generally make good a small collection of late 1950's, early 1960's classic Corgi vintage paperbacks. I brush the top edges with a soft toothbrush, sort out any creases and turned over corners inside, remove the odd sticker, re-glue any damaged spines and finally polish the covers. The end result looks pretty decent! Featured is a very nice 1st edition of Mickey Spillane's I, The Jury.
    Hope you enjoy the process! If you enjoy this video for the ASMR qualities, that's just a bonus.

    Another great video Jules. You know I've been getting a few books through Ebay and get a few nice ones but getting a bunch of subpare books too.
    You know how it is. Like a crap shoot.
    At least with me. So I've about decided to just go through Abebooks and Biblio to get most of the books I really want.
    I know I'll be paying more over all but I'll be getting much better books in the end. I've decided to get the 18 book run of Avon Fantasy Reader. from 1947 to 1952 . There digest books but pretty nice. At least I think so. I want a bunch of Weird Tales but in good shape ?
    Not unless I start robbing banks.
    Thanks for putting up with my rambling. Don't have anyone in my personal life that I can talk about my love of old, and new , books.
    Take care good Sir.

      Hi Alvin, I use Abe books myself, usually the books are better quality as the sellers are more experienced book dealers. The Avon Fantasy Readers are fantastic, definitely s great series to collect. Let me know how you get on.

    Manhunt was where I discovered Spillane too. I, The Jury is an innovative good mystery, but I think he wrote better Mike Hammer novels. I've read all of them and believe The Girl Hunters is one of his very best because it truly demonstrates Spillane's maxim: "Nobody reads a book to get to the middle. Your first sentence sells the book. Your last sentence sells your next one." Spillane told Johnny Carson one night about his third Mike Hammer novel: "I bet old man Dutton (his publisher) a thousand bucks I could write an entire novel and leave out the last word and the whole story wouldn't make sense. Dutton said no way, took the bet and I mailed the Vengeance Is Mine manuscript to him. A few nights later my phone rings at three in the morning, it's Dutton and he's hollering what's the last word. And I holler back where's my thousand bucks."

      @@JulesBurt Only a year ago on yootoob I watched the entire 1963 Girl Hunters movie starring Spillane as Hammer and Shirley Eaton (fresh from her gold paint role in Goldfinger) as the Blonde. I looked again for it just now and could only find clips of the movie but the full-length Kiss Me Deadly is still there; also found some Spillane interviews but none on the Tonight Show. But another time I saw Spillane on Carson doing publicity for The Erection Set. If the title wasn't enough Spillane's wife also appears nude on the cover. Trying to draw audience attention away from that Carson asked innocently, "Does your wife write too?" Spillane fired back, "Checks!"

    Thank for the vid.Yes i do use some of the hints...i use the white glue stick.The Mr Sheen looks like a hint i could use .Do you ever get any paper back with brittle covers? Seriously the covers are like wafers and break apart..i use a glue stick and note paper to repair .It seems to happen with the newer covers..🙄.you are in for a great read with Spillane🤗👍.A couple of my old finds were to far gone to repair...it was not easy dumping...one was an early Bradbury.. 🙄🙄 No it was not 'Dark Carnival' 😏

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Sylvan, Mr Sheen is the best that I've ever used but any furniture polish is probably fine, in moderation. Covers on paperbacks get damaged easily, some can be repaired, some not. That Bradbury sounds like a heartbreaker 🙂

      I've been using Pledge clean it multisurface cleaner as you can't seem to find Mr Sheen in America. Or the Pritt glue sticks. I got Avery from Amazon and the cap was split so the glue was so dryed up it is about useless. Sometimes I truly hate Amazon. Books, CD's, DVD's , all of those I've received from them damaged. P.O. big time.

      If they're 'absorbent' stickers then lighter fluid will soak in and kill the adhesive. If they're shiny, you might have to get a corner up and use lighter fluid teasing it off bit by bit.
