- In this video, my buddy Will and I try to resurrect a Caterpillar 977 that's been sitting for years with an unknown problem. The seller had it listed as inoperable for $4,000, but he's running out of time to get it gone, so he offered it to me for FREE if I could get started and off his property in 3 days!!!
Be sure to check out the other heavy equipment saves on the channel, along with diesel truck content, 4x4 content, etc!
And PLEASE don't forget to LIKE the video and SUBSCRIBE to the channel!
Thanks!

You realize a lot of people that watch these old equipment videos would rather hear and see the machine in real time rather than fast motion or music? Always good to see someone rescue old iron. Carry on!
Thanks for the input. I'll try to get more real-time audio and video next video. Scott
Maybe I’m in the minority but I thought the sped up footage and music overlays were tastefully done. You got a great channel, thanks for sharing your content with us 👍
@@hallowedbethygame2840 - Thanks for the input. Scott
Great to see a man that enjoys a challenge love to see these old machines brought back to life keep it up.
Thanks for the input! Scott
Love the sound of those old Cats.
You and me both, Harry! Thanks, Scott
Put 2 6x6 on each side to crawl up on and off. The driver doesn’t think much of his Eq. to load over the beaver tail when he could disconnect, if he drove for me I would fire him on the spot. Ran 41,43 and 955 pedal steer great machines.
Hi Larry - Yeah, I was surprised at how the driver wanted me to load, especially since disconnecting was an option. Thanks for the input, Scott
You can’t beat a deal like that. Glad you got it running and looking forward to watching you get it ready to go to work! Great video Scott!
Hey Mr. Breeze - lots more content to come on this one! Good to hear from you, Scott
A job well done! Kudos to y'all. It's always nice when these things go better than expected!
Bobby - Unfortunately, there's bad news coming up. I'll explain in the next video. Thanks, Scott
I operated the 977 for R.H.S. LEE trucking of pearl city oahu HI. From 1990 to 2006. We demolished buildings then loaded his semis with that loader. It had a Peterson demolition bucket that would hold big loads. He also had some with 4 in 1 buckets that we used to load trucks and help grade lots. The 977 can do many jobs. It's all up to the skill of the operator.
Pearl City? I used to work down the road from there from 2003-2005 at Camp HM Smith! Lived on Aweoweo Beach in Waialua - man, I miss that place! Scott
@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE hi Scott. I lived in ewa Beach then pearl city. I could look right down into the valley where the company was located. I would go into the office and Mr. Lee would tell me what jobsite I would be working at that day. He had jobs all over the island. I'm retired now, but I really enjoyed running his equipment. He would buy the older equipment and fix them and his operators would run them..operating heavy equipment is a real joy. And for good pay.
@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE waialua. On the north side. Had a buddy that lived there. He was a army national guard soldier like I was. We were 11C infantry..he's passed away now but a real nice guy. Walter hagge was his name.
@@steven-rt8kb - Interesting. I was national guard infantry many years ago, but in Louisiana. The name Walter Hagge isn't familiar to me, but he and I may have crossed paths at some point.
Just Subscribed ....during summers when school was out i would sometimes go with my Dad to check on the Jobsites and used to see these 977s in action....i loved watching the " teeter totter " action as they went into and out of steep places....
Thanks again for the videos Brother.
Welcome aboard Gregory! Scott
That’s a great find. Bravo from Victoria Australia
Thanks from Texas! Scott
Love to see those who would preserve old iron. New is nice, but what a deal. Great work, now the fun begins. Time to change all the filters and fluids. I believe the steering clutch and brake adjustment is under the fuel tank. You already opened the panel on the walk around. Good luck and enjoy your find. God Bless.
Yes, the fun begins now. Unfortunately, there is some damage and missing parts to address. Details to follow! Thanks, Scott
Reminds me of the film "Shake Hands With Danger"
Great video Scott! Looking forward to see what you do with it! I say make it look new.
Hey Randy - Well, it was cheap for a reason! There are some significant issues that'll need to be addressed before I work on cosmetics. More to follow! Scott
What a home run, it is ready to go to work.
Actually, it's not. There's some carnage that we need to discuss in the next video... Thanks, Scott
keep up the good content scott! love the videos
Hey Nathan - Thanks for the kind words! Scott
That's a great find 👍👍
I think so, too! Thanks, Scott
Really like that old iron back up and runnin.
Me, too, Ron! Thanks, Scott
Really lucked out fella just minor stuff.but seriously that was a butt pucker getting up on the trailer, getting off looked but a breeze. Have fun dozing!!!snookie pa.😊😊😊
Well, we have gotten into it a bit and there are some serious issues. More to follow, but it's going to be painful!!! Scott
The Final on the Right side is missing parts on it. The outside Bearing cover.. And that's probably why they had the track loose...The seal may be out or Bearings .
Correct. The bearing hub/assembly is damaged; I suspect that's what they were going to attempt to repair. Trying to see if parts are available. Thanks
Nice work.
Thanks! Scott
Nice find ❤❤❤
Thanks
They made 955 and 977s for a long time that one has shuttle shift so it is a later model. Great find👍
It's a 1961 or so. 53A. Thanks
You lucky devil.
Nice score.
Thanks, Paul, but you should probably check out the next video. The 977 has some serious issues to address. Scott
Congrats on the free 977-H dozer. look to see if u can get the title before u work on it. also tape-up the exhaust hole to keep the rain-out. great med size dozer..
Thanks for the input, Billy. Scott
Hello fellow Arboristsite member! Good luck on yer project! 😂
Thanks for checking in from AS! Scott
Enjoyed it
Thanks for the input! Scott
Man my CAT old girl best looking Front Loaders 😊 Friend you Rock. 😊❤
Excellent job Loading the beast on that lowboy. Just saying "WOW" with that steering clutch problem you still made it look easy. What a find. One question I have is the front bucket control lever a pull BACK to dump. Some of the older CAT front Loaders had that control on levers.
The loading and unloading did give me a bit of adrenaline! I think it's forward to dump, but I can't recall off the top of my head. Thanks for the input, Scott
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE
Back in the late 1970s I got to run International
125 & 175 Front Loaders on big mainline sewer
The crew used a 850-B case Loader on backfill and pea gravel running it was a fast track loader
I remember filling those grease fitting on the Case 450 dozer the company
Had on track adjustments. My first experience was running a HD-5 that had a big clutch lever.
I stopped her one time and left one of the front bucket controls in the forward or back locked in
And tried to restart her, she would not start till I figured that I left the loader control locked in. I think I pushed it back when I got out without knowing it. It's been many years now. Have you ever heard of the Dynahoe backhoe. Made by Bucyrus Erie till 1985. That when Bucyrus just stuck to big mining no more bear for the stout construction line of equipment.
MOPARTS got me here. 👍👍
Excellent! Thanks for checking in. Scott
If you need any info on the 977H. Try to get a hold of Matt @ Diesel Creek, he has a 977 and did a lot of work on it. Check out his You tube channel. I worked using a 977 in the Blizzard of 78 in Mass. 38 hrs. straight open cab no "Rops" peddle steering with a big snow thrower on it.
I'm quite familiar with Diesel Creek and Matt's escapades. Big fan of his. 977 with an open cab for 38 hours after a blizzard sounds like an epic - and brutal - adventure! I'm sure that sucker moved a lot of snow!!! Thanks for the input, Scott
i had a old rancher give me a d-8 dozer in wyoming said it didnt run had a cab and heater and ac took 100 gals of diesil and a few new batteries apparently itt had sat for 17 years. fired up loaded it up on my low boy brought it home that was a few years ago i still use it along with thed-6 that was also given to me. sometimes when they sit to long the steering gets lockedup so usually a few hours of running them will sometimes free the steering brakes up. .
Man, I'd love to get a free D8 or a free D6! That's awesome! Scott
I never operated heavy equipment, but had some friends that did and I know you can lift the front of a crawler with the scoop. but i thought they would have some sort of a ramp? Anyway you did great job loading and unloading it!
Hey Roy - It's a low boy trailer. The front of the trailer uncouples from the tractor and you can just drive up the ramp, but that's not what we did. It's quicker to just to climb up and down the back of the trailer. Thanks, Scott
my dually is a 2008 lariat i love that pickup.
Sounds like a nice one!
Have to admit I laughed... thinking what will it take to get it to start?
Answer: a battery.
Good stuff
Yep, but that's where the good news ended! Check out the next video to see where things went sideways. Scott
Bring it to moss hill tx. The trinity river is out of its banks and we have 1 mile of road to re-work lmao.
I gotta fix it first! Details in the next video!!! Scott
Those 60 A serial number machines are the best and durable Just need good maintenance programs
It's a 53A. Thanks, Scott
955H is 60A. 977H is 53A.
As others have mentioned, that was a definite pucker moment watching it load over the axles onto the lowboy. Otherwise, nice work all around.
Not a criticism, but if I were to be in the biz or hobby of rescuing strange-to-me machines, I would be tempted to bring a flamethrower with me to knock down some of the vegetation, ticks, and other undesirables that may be lurking below. Generally, I'm not that afraid of spiders and such, but nothing worse than a stray one wandering up a pant leg, then it gets disturbed when the host moves, and ends up biting in defense of itself. Same with scorpions, and other little hard-to-spot creatures that call the area around and under a long-stationary machine their home.
Nothing warms my cold, cold heart, more than seeing someone save good machinery from becoming scrap metal, and bringing it back to a somewhat productive, useful, and appreciated life of service.
Hi Stan - I actually took the weedwacker to the tall grass before we got started working. I think that was my last time loading up on the lowboy like that. Thanks for the input, Scott
The flip side of the dip stick shows the safe range for engine start up in the cross hatch area. You did not check the other side of the dip stick!
It does not have the markings on the flip side. I checked. Thanks, Scott
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE My apologies then. My father in law has a 1967 Cat D5 with a standard shift. I assumed that all of the CAT’s in that range of years had the same type of dip stick.
@@vicmerle57 - No worries. Thanks, Scott
That one piece drive wheel does not need to be replaced when worn out. You can get the outer part of the wheel as a weld on replacement.
Thanks for the input, Scott
I'm suspicious...
That was too easy....
Watch the next video and I think you'll understand... Scott
Nice❤
Thanks!
You need to get a camera with motion stabilisation. The video has way too much vibration compared to other videos I watch about old equipment rescue. Ask Matt from Diesel Creek about what camera he uses for moving shots. His moving shots are beautiful and smooth. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the input, Derek. I can change the settings on my camera or get a gimbal; I'll probably try the settings first. Scott
Driver hit you up _CRAZY,_ like, $1800 for 125 miles did you say ...?!
Could at least have de-coupled as normal, for ease of loading !
I got one other quote for $1850 for the same trip. I'll shop around more before I need another ride. Thanks, Scott
Hard to believe it was that easy
Well, there's an update coming and now I know why it was free... Thanks, Scott
the d8 runs great, as does the 6 have no clue how many hours since both hour meters are broken. i am looking at a free d3 tomorrow. also doesnt run. i have seen it before sitting in the woods. i dont care if this one runs or not, they are hard to find with the 6 way blade. i will use it this winter to plow roads. i can haul that with my f 350 duallly.
A D3 would be nice and super portable, too! I have an F350 dually as well; a 1991 crew cab with a 7.3 IDI and a ZF-5. There are a few videos of it on my channel. Scott
Yo Scott, you are talking too much. We viewers heard you 1st time, free if you can move it b4 Wed am. Congrats on your persistance & honesty, but come on with finding all major issues...but you got very lucky with its fuel, no water in cylinders via open exhsust. Just dead batteries. Now lets get on with steering clutches, air, engine oil, hyd oil change + final drive oil levels. I think Diesel Creek had a video on salvaging one of his dozers with rusted clutch plates; also Jesse Muller had a video on this issue as well. So check them out. Enjoyed yur video, great sunny, 'blue sky' weather made video look mighty fine. Looking forward to yur next video where we learn problem with steering...or...maybe you sold it already?🤔🔧⚙️🗜🔩
Yo James - the first issue I need to figure out is the right final drive. We'll discuss that in the next video. I'll probably check fluid levels as well, but I don't know if I'm going to do much on the steering clutch until I address the final drive. No, haven't sold it yet, and have no plans to. Thanks for the input, Scott
The Caterpillar 500? Could be a big attraction.
Now you've got me thinking! That would be epic! Thanks for the input, Scott
Interesting be careful of the um, er, ah trap.
The bolts holding the rear sprocket on thr right side as you sit in the machine
Yep. They're missing in action. If you watch the second video, I discuss these. Thanks
This is the first time I have seen one if your videos. You were doing well until loading the tractor on the trailer. I full intended to rip you a new one for being unsafe until you explained it was the drivers decision to load it that way. Still i would have made him load it correctly as i have seen to many fall off and hurt someone while loading incorrectly. I really am not trying to be a Karen, just don't want to see anyone get hirt because someone is to lazy to do their job thatbyou are paying them to do for you. Good day and i will watch out for more of your videos
Hi Darrell - Good points. Thanks for the input. Scott
Would have changed my pants loading that on the not so low lowboy.
There was a bit of adrenaline involved in loading and unloading! Scott
If you flip the dip stick over, it will give you a reading to check the oil with the engine off..
Are you sure about that? I'll look at it next time I'm out there. Thanks
I wondered why he didn’t look on other side…..
@@billylance8163 It's not on the other side. I checked again today just to make sure. Thanks
It actually does not. I checked again today. Thanks
That's like a sign saying ... free beer tomorrow.
If u can't start it does that mean u have to buy it?
If it hadn't started, I probably would have still "bought" it, unless the engine was seized. Thanks, Scott
i dont know what 113 you drove but we had the regular tensioner on ours
Ours used a grease fitting to tension the tracks, just like the Bradley and a Cat crawler/dozer.
Very good shape for bein that old.
It does look good, but it has some mechanical issues to address. Thanks, Scott
Yeah I thought that was weird the way he had you load and unload looks like it would be hard on the trailer?
Hard on the trailer and hard on the machine, too, I think. Thanks
You can't beat free.
Exactly!!!
👍
picked it up drug it home new battery and oil change. fresh fuel fired right up i just finished replacing all the hyd hoses. guy drove by wanted to buy it i gave him a price i thought was stupid. he left came back 3 hours later with the cash lole so off to find something else to play with
Outstanding!
You loading on an RGN over the rear of the trailer, why, its harder on the trailer the loader and the truck. Plus it's much safer to detach and load from the front a lot less chance of sliding off the side. To each their own I guess
That wasn't my idea; that was how the driver wanted to load. Next time I'll tell him to uncouple. Thanks, Scott
American iron!
Exactly!
Why did you park it in the middle of a field instead of somewhere you could work on it.
Michael - well, there's a LOT of work that gets done on heavy equipment in a field, but your point is valid. I just moved it to my new shop. Details to follow in the next video. Scott
What's the plan with this? Flip it or do you have some work you need to do with it?
Excellent question, Carl. There's some work that I can do with it on my buddy's ranch, but not a lot. No real plans to flip it at this point. Time will tell. Thanks, Scott
Seems to me that maybe you could come off some money for that machine being that you are 'dozer guys'. Seller didn't know squat from what you said. Might be good business practice to see that they get a few bucks for it.
Pretty sure the seller was quite happy to have it off the property ASAP and being saved by someone. Plus, there are some fairly significant - and expensive - repairs needed that I'll address in the next video. Thanks, Scott
Its called greese?
I didn't see anyone check the oil first.
We checked the oil first. Pretty sure that's on video. Thanks
I just missed it then.
You supposed to loaded them from the side and spin it
Yes, that's an option as well. Thanks, Scott
Chad Adams BAMBOZELD you ! 😮 Average haul price is 3 to 5 $ a mile depending on extras like WIDE LOAD , Follow Crew ,special permits. NEVER LOAD EQUIPMENT LIKE YOU DID !! lets see what kind of mechanic you are .🤨
Well, I did get a quote from someone else for $1,850 which was only $50 more than what Chad quoted me. I was also on a tight timeline; needed it moved the next day. Hopefully next time I'll be able to shop around a bit more. Thanks for the input. Scott
That would be cheap. I do oversize loads. Sadly people are cutting rates now days
I have never seen anyone load or unload like that. Very sketchy.
Yep. It was sketchy. Next time, I'll make sure he uncouples the trailer. Thanks
I usually fast forward rather than watch repetative work, to see a ton of nuts on the engine cover, ones enough. Watching a strip down is a waste of time.
Thanks for the input.
if you MUST play the annoying music please dont play it at full volume
Thanks for the input.
Why not put it on a trailer and move it it’s worth for parts if not running !
It's running and operating now. thanks
My Lawn Mower sits over the Winter and in the Spring it Wont Start and you want us to believe you hook up a Jump Pack to old Batteries and hit the swish and it wants to start ? Nope Not Buying it
You don't have to believe it, but it's 100% legit. I don't have the time or the energy to play reindeer games. Scott
I cant keep watching this. he talks with a lisp!
Hi Shane - Never in my life has anyone told me that I speak with a lisp. Maybe you're right, but I kind of doubt it. Scott
You don't have nothing there no good for anything
I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. Scott
Just to boring, sorry not like any of the channels I watch, they keep it fun and entertaining to watch. Just a little to suit and tie for me.
Thanks for the input. Scott
Same dozer in the movie “Tremors”.
No kidding? I'll have to check that out. Thanks, Scott
Tyler @diesejl loves these 977s. @C&C_Equipment & @DieselCreek loves them too if you need any assistance
I don't think I'm a fan of the video style - you talked through all the levers on the machine(don't care) then sped up all the actual fixing parts which most want to see. Can't do it...
Thanks! Scott
Nice! I can take a shot at starting it if you want me to! 🫡
We're good, Olivia, but thanks for the offer! Scott
Go for it Liv!
