Not related to this video, but I really hate _hate_ *hate* UA-cam's imitation TicTok "Shorts" format that you used to announce Magnus Carlsen's withdrawal from the St Louis tournament, because, for no good reason that I can see, the format doesn't show you how long a video is going to be; doesn't let you jump to particular positions in the video; and restricts how you can adjust the sound, to on or off only. What reason is there for choosing a deliberately crippled format when you can upload a standard UA-cam video that is however short you need it to be?
Because it reaches more people. You Tube really push their "shorts" with them sitting at the top of the page on mobile devices using the app. I agree that they are a poor format with the limitations you mentioned, and a lot of the content very annoying, with the same songs dubbed over everything, even TV show and movie scenes. But a lot of people watch on mobile so doing shorts is a major way to increase exposure to a channel now.
Nice recap. Thanks. Always enjoy your vids. I like lots of different chess channels, but yours and Hikaru Nakamura's are my favorites. Niemann is up about 200 classical Elo since the start of 2021, which is fairly unprecedented at this level: the 2500 to 2700 push typically takes much longer. Was he cheating all this time and just not getting caught? If not, did he decide to just start cheating now on the cusp of reaching super-GM status (and also not get caught)? Both of these seem less likely than that he's a budding great player with obvious social (psychological?) issues, which is how he's always come across to me in interviews.
@@dr_tlmk It doesn't, but I don't think he should get another chance. If he's willing to cheat once, he's lost all goodwill with the community as far as I'm concerned.
19. Qg3 was the first move I considered as Agadmator was playing through the game, and I'm only a 2000 elo player. The question is whether the attack is worth the piece.
The attack on the h pawn with the queen pinning the defender is a pretty standard idea I woulds say, I'm no expert but I thought it was a completely natural move.
@@jorgeeduardodussanvillanue46 Except two moves deep its pretty clear white has no clear follow-up, and its all long-term compensation. Humans can work with long-term compensation for pawns or exchange; but an entire piece? That's stockfish territory.
@@jandal8905 dude, its classical. have you ever done that in classical otb? i frequently sacrifice in blitz game but not classical, add to that he only took 5 minutes. mikhail tal would be suprised if he witness this 😂
So Hans played G3 really fast. Though it was like 20 moves deep. No super GM understood this move. In the end, when Hans came to interview to analyse, the moves he suggested were winning for black multiple times. Yeah seems logical. Everything is fine.
Even on the previous day, Hans said luckily he saw this non-existentent variation 20 moves deep in the engine. He said he followed a game from 2018 from Magnus vs So. But there are no games in the database about it. Even after that game, his analysis was utterly wrong. He hangs a bishop out of nowhere. Yeah, that seems fine too.
The moves he suggested were natural. Push the pawns and sauce the king. He didn't calculate the variations he just like the position. I don't think its suspicious tbh.
@@talhasaimon2436 it's really sad honestly; look how many fools in the comments are saying "Magnus fanboys." Hikaru is no fanboy, and he seemed to see the obvious truth too.
in his analysis he's talking possible lines, not suggesting them... at the end of the day you choose what you think is the best move and thats what he did
What if a nearly photographic memory, coupled with a "less than 2700 intuitive analysis" but GM nevertheless, absorbed many machine thinking lines of play; we enter those positions and the human opponent becomes confused by a switching between machine thinking lines before the human gets the machine "thread of ideas" and understands the idea?
Many chess GMs do have photographic memories. Understanding engine lines is a whole other story though. Engines can play lines that are like 15-20 moves long with the sole intention of making a piece less active.
Not hilarious, sad. It is mainly the hopeless way Niemann simply could not explain why he made his moves that are what agadmator would call his "disgusting engine lines" that convinced me Magnus' suspicions are likely correct.
In the variation where the bishop captures the rook, why would white make a repetition? Why not trade queens - white is up the exchange with a slightly better pawn structure and a less exposed king. Seems like you'd want to play that position as white, no?

New to the chessworld here so I could be way off base but wanted to point out a few things. When Hans went through security today he had a pack of gum in his hand. The pack of gum contains a piece of aluminum foil. The metal detection wand may not have been able to detect if something was concealed in that pack. Also, Hans has crazy hair.. do players have to walk through a metal detector in addition to going through the wand detector? Maybe something could be concealed in his hair if there is no walk through metal detector. The guy who ran the wand over him didn't run it over/around his head. Lastly, if there is no electronic device involved. It's still possible he could have someone at the event giving him signals. Probably why they put games on 15 minute broadcast delay. Again, I'm new to the chessworld. Idk the security protocols at these events. I'm just spitballing.

Seeing some videos about the reason Magnus left the tournament. In one video, Hikaru Nakamura has his suspicions about Niemann using an engine. Anyone who watches Penn and Teller knows that deception is the art of magic. That said, I'm holding off judgement until more is learned.
Occasionally is definitely the right way to describe it. It is 100% logical to think that someone who is cheating would not be cheating on all of their moves. What is more likely to happen is that a cheater would only cheat on some of their moves, and then using their natural talent to cover up and hide that they are cheating
This Niemann thing is really getting out of hand. Maybe it is Magnus who has acted irresponsibly. All of the players have the highest respect for Magnus because they know how good he is, and so when he says or does something, there is a reason for it. But with him abdicating the title, and now this withdrawal which has thrown this tournament into a dark abyss, perhaps his motives/agenda/decision making has been compromised.
So much this! Every social media is borrowing features from others making all of them homogeneous. They have lost their unique identity.
The 'Chess Villain' is playing some brilliant stuff. Hats off to Hans!

Nice recap. Thanks. Always enjoy your vids. I like lots of different chess channels, but yours and Hikaru Nakamura's are my favorites. This game is one of the games that I watched as it was being played in the tournament. Two of my main hobbies are chess and tennis. So I'm having a great time watching the US Open and the Sinquefield Cup these days. 👍
Nieman was cought two times cheating online and was banned from online games. Every thing points to him cheating in this tournament.

19. Qg3 is out of the world, an AlphaZero move. Either it is really deep prep or to quote Jan Gustaffson, this is "weird"

#Suggestion Sinquefield Cup 2022 Round 3, Wesley So vs Fabiano Caruana
So Hans played G3 really fast. Though it was like 20 moves deep. No super GM understood this move. In the end, when Hans came to interview to analyse, the moves he suggested were winning for black multiple times. Yeah seems logical. Everything is fine.
The interview said it all.
@@talhasaimon2436 it's really sad honestly; look how many fools in the comments are saying "Magnus fanboys." Hikaru is no fanboy, and he seemed to see the obvious truth too.
in his analysis he's talking possible lines, not suggesting them... at the end of the day you choose what you think is the best move and thats what he did
Bishop f1 is a signature Hans move Hikaru f3 and Firozija G4
Need to check if there is something in Hans's Hair. I saw the security footage, they never check the hair.
So what? Modern chess is heavily dependent upon memory.

Can someone elaborate why the results don't matter after the withdrawal? Doesn't it just result to a forfeit by the person who left?
I don’t know if he is cheating but he certainly plays quite strongly. Occassionally it feels like an engine.
Maybe Niemann actually has gotten better at chess the last 1-2 years. He's 19, it happens.
How did Magnus act irresponsibly?
@@TheMsr1997 He has never withdrawn mid tourney before. Even if he "suspects" something, there's no way to cheat OTB with all the security measures. The tournament is now almost ruined. That is how he acted irresponsibly. And I said "MAYBE" he acted irresponsibly.

I think it’s Bxh6, gxh6, Qe5+, f6, Qxf5 and you lose your advantage.
Best would probably not to take the bishop and still play Qf6 (except you’ve lost a pawn compared to what happened to the game) or play Bg6 (which just seem weak).
Therefore, by playing Qf6 immediately you keep your pawn and your king is safer
Queen g6 maybe?
@@neoatomium sorry.. Couldn't get you
@@ganapathyshankar4420 Bishop takes on h6, if the sacrifice is accepted (pawn g takes bishop in h6), then you can deliver a check in e5 with your Queen.
You must defend the check (for example pawn to f6) but then you lose your bishop on f5.
Another solution would be not to take the bishop in h6 and play Queen to f6.
Since Queen f6 seems to be a move that you will play anyway, it's better to play Queen f6 right away
@@neoatomium I am afraid.. My doubt is when white's bishop is placed on e5 and attacks the queen.. Queen has to be moved to g6.

Niemann's performance is usually sub-par in previous tournaments, particularly the ones in which Magnus was participating. All of a sudden, Niemann is having the performance of his career. From that standpoint, I can see why Magnus is suspecting that Niemann is cheating.
that's how performance increasement and learning works. you suck you suck you suck and then suck some more but if you continue working you occassionally makes massive leaps in improvement.
