The Last Airbender Ty Lee Chiblocking
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 чер 2020
- Ty Lee was a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, often utilizing chi blocking, a unique form of martial arts which targets pressure points located in the human body. By striking these, she was able to disrupt an individual's chi flow and temporarily paralyze them, thereby also preventing the victim from bending for a period of time.

Out of all the non-benders in the show, she was actually a threat.
And mai
And Jet
And Sokka, though not through brute force
And June

I love ty Lee not only for her personality and loyalty to her actual friends but she's one of the non benders that could actually defend herself against any elemental bender. Well maybe not every bender.
@Avatar Clips no she's gay for Azula
@@delilahbeckett6420 That's a funny way to spell "afraid".
Imagine if she had bending along with her chi-blocking.

It's kinda ironic how Ty left her family to join the circus - reason being her sisters were practically identical to her and in the the end she became a Kyoshi Warrior. Where you wear the SAME outfit and makeup as the rest of the fighters.
But instead of others resembling her, now *she* resembles someone else.
The difference being she'll always look just like her sisters, she can always take off the make up and uniform and just be herself.
I like that actually, I think its a subtle way to show character development. It tells us the she’s found meaning in being part of a group or “family” even if they all look the same in a sense
the thing is that her family tried to indoctrinate her into acting the same as her sisters regardless of what she wanted or believed, the Kyoshi warriors are a group joined under the same ideology where they may act as a squad but are motivated to use their own personal strong points, remember Suki and the rest figting Sokka, everyone showed something diferent
They actually made a point of it in a ATLA comic. I kinda wish they would've made those into episodes instead of the live action avatar.
I love how at 0:58 when she hits his head it hurts her own fist. it's really hilarious bc sokka is completely defenseless, but the only thing hard enough to take a punch from Ty Lee was his "thick skull" , it's a reference to sokka being "hard headed" and it's gold lmao
well he hrew out of being sexist when he met the kyoshi warriors but he is still more hard headed than an earth bender.
Kinda sad that he’s not an earth bender, with his stubbornness he’d probably be a master.
Nah, you're just overanalysing this show
@@brq267 How so?
sokka: good try, but no
What I find fascinating about Ty Lee’s character is that despite initially being the enemy of Team Avatar and a chi blocking master, she never displayed any killer instinct!
She doesn't know what is doing, she just wants to help her friends and besides, she was taught that the fire nation was correct in everything
but her chi blocking is a threat, it later developed in leged of korra and unleashed a hidden potential. Taking someone's bending away
I always felt that Ty Lee went along with anything Azula wanted for fear of pain and death. Mai was smarter, but was under then same thumb. They weren't friends. They were servants.
@@tsumugi9880 You mean blood bending. Amon used blood bending to take away bending, not chi-blocking.
@@controlman7490 technically both. He used Blood Bending to block all chi paths for bending.

Fun fact : Ty Lee’s martial art is inspired by Dim Mak, a branch from Kung-Fu that consist of aiming and hitting pressure points in order to instantly kill the opponent
So, basically “Aim for the jugular”
Isn't her martial art more inspired by Varmakkalai though (employed in Kalaripayattu, Silambam and a bunch of other South Indian martial arts)? With the Portuguese in Goa decribing how those who studied the martial art of Kalaripayattu, "when they are seven years of age, are sent to schools, where they are taught many tricks of nimbleness and dexterity; there they teach them to dance and turn about and to twist on the ground, to take royal leaps and other leaps, and this they learn twice a day as long as they are children, and they become so loose jointed and supple and they make them turn their bodies contrary to nature". Given her fighting style, doesn't this seem to match Ty Lee's martial art a lot better than Dim Mak does?
Even more so, given that Dim Mak's 'touch of death' is explicitly described by Kung Fu practitioners as having a 'delayed action', of anything between a few minutes and several weeks, and Ty Lee's, like Varmakkalai's paralysis techniques, takes effect near-instantaneously. And also worth mentioning, a sub-variant of Varmakkalai was also developed and employed to control and attack war elephants; these pressure-point striking techniques are still employed to this day by elephant tamers in Indian circuses, and after the martial arts bans and destruction of their technique scrolls which were implemented across India under British rule, the circuses were the only places where these techniques managed to survive. And where did Ty Lee learn her chi-blocking martial arts techniques? The circus...
@@sundeepparhar1126 You make a solid case. Thanks for the info.

Well there is a theory that she is a descendant of the air nomads so kind of an anti-gravity perk there
@@jadenmccown2132 not mention how she chi blocks somewhat resembles to energy bending on LOK
@@frigidsilver983 wasn't that water benders and blood benders and energy benders thing?
Here's a theory I once read that really made sense to me. Ty Lee is actually a descendant of an airbender who later moved to the Fire Nation.
Reasons why:
1. Her eyes are grey like Aang's and the other airbenders that we once saw.
2. She intentionally fights by doing no harm to her opponents, as a way of peacefully defeating them.
3. She always acts as the voice of reason and peace whenever she's with Mai and Azula.
4. She's constantly happy which connects the history that the Air Nomads had a great sense of humor and fun.
5. Chi blocking could have been adapted from old styles of bending passed down to the non-benders of the Air Nomads.
So it can be safe to say that Ty Lee ancestors could possibly be one of the Air Nomads.
I dig it
How the hell do people think like this, or maybe cause I'm slow😢
Airbending faded away over time if that airbender doesn't has enough spiritual connection. So yes her ancestors maybe were the airbenders who survived the genocide and sneak into Fire Nation. But due to cover themselves, they couldn't live as a normal life an airbender could, plus anxious of being hunting and genocide too. After a long time they lost their own bending and their newborn childs are no longer have the power. I think it also happened to a bunch of runaway airbenders to EK or WT(what Fire Nation gonna do if they run into those nations territories ? Crying around and demand to get them all?). And after the Harmonic Convergence that their descendants received (or unlock) airbending again (it make sense that no other bendings was unlocked like that)
I've heard this theory too, and I quite like it. Her appearance definitely suggests some Air Nomad ancestry, if you look for the right things. Actually, she looks quite similar to Jinora! It's a fun theory for sure, even though that ancestry would have to be very distant given her family's noble title. From the pre-Sozin era, I'd say.
@pr0tean I think it's neither been confirmed nor denied that all Air Nomads were airbenders. So who knows.

you gotta love that Ty Lee siding with Mai was not because she wanted to betray Azula but because it was the only solution where neither of them get hurt, she chose the pacific option in the argument because she valued both of her friends the same amount
She was basically forced to by Azula. She always held threats over both Ty Lee and Mai, the only reason Ty Lee joined was because Azula nearly killed her in the circus performance. I always thought Ty lees resemblance of Aang was foreshadowing she’d eventually turn on Azula.
Azula was always practically holding her at gunpoint, but Ty Lee and Mai were always friends. It makes sense she’d join the one friend she knows wouldn’t hurt her.

@@Necroskull388 True. Although she has a huge weakness against anyone who can bend huge amounts of an element because as acrobatic as she is she can only move as fast as an unassisted human. In this sense you kind of have to admire her intelligence in picking fights. Toph would eat here alive fr fr
1:54 is no one talking about how smart it was of Toph to subdue Ty Lee first, in my opinion out of Azusa, Ty Lee, and Mai, Ty Lee is the most dangerous one especially if you’re fighting her for the first time ever with her Chi Blocking and acrobatics and agility she’s definitely the fastest and it’s scary how she can subdue you with just a few strikes, yeah Azula has firebending and stuff but you can avoid that by dodging especially if you have an ability that isn’t harmed by fire like all the other elements do, and Mai well her marksmanship can be avoided too. It’s just my opinion tho
Also Azula could just break free with a fire blast.

2:18 People don’t talk about how insane this is, she is doing a full sprint on thin cable above a boiling lake. She was super dangerous, luckily her personality was the complete opposite.
Ty Lee was a sweet girl turned into a villain by Azula. She just wanted to be a performer at the circus but Azula passive aggressively threatened her to join or else. That's what a toxic friendship can do. Eventually Azula's closest friends cut her off. First Mai ends their friendship by stating she loves Zuko more than she fears her. Then Ty Lee chi blocks Azula to defend Mai. It was one of the most "I'm through with you" moment in Avatar TLA. The other moment was when Zuko finally confronts his father during the eclipse telling him he wasn't a true father to him and that what his father did to him was never justifiable though most of his life, he was convinced that it was justified.
1:10 that's the only time Aang attacked her in the whole show
The fact that she taught the kioshi warriors chiblocking means that theyre the best non-bending defence against literally anyone
Ty Lee, like many of the others on this show, is a prodigy in her field.
Katara learned how to waterbend with the best of them in record time, keeping pace with much older, more experienced masters and picking up the art of bloodbending when she was still a teen.
Toph was already one of the best earthbenders when the group met her and knew how to do all sorts of crazy things like tell someone's position and intent through reading their body movement in the earth, knowing when they're lying all the way to inventing metalbending. Toph is crazy powerful and she's like what? 10? 11?
Azula was a firebending prodigy that could create lightning at a very young age, something which took even Iroh many years to master and was capable of using her firebending in innovative ways only very few other benders could replicate, like using it to propel herself forward in a faux flying fashion.
Aang was already prodigious in airbending before they figured out he was the next avatar and invented his own tricks and airbending skills when he was just a kid, like the ability to float on a ball of air which sorta became a signature move of his. He was so good with his airbending, he was able to channel it on pure reflex, which saved his life by a hair on several occasions.
And yet, here's Ty Lee. A girl with no bending, but she scares them all shitless anyway. Like them, she's a prodigy in her field. A girl with extreme flexibility and agility, capable of performing feats that even a perfectionist like Azula was incapable of replicating and we all know Azula is no slouch. And on top of that, she has the ability to block people's chi, temporarily preventing them from accessing their ability to bend their respective element and paralyzing them or parts of their body, as per her own choosing. She's so good with it, she can do it with her eyes closed.
You can actually see Katara panic when Ty Lee comes running her way after she knows what Ty Lee can do, because getting your bending removed, even if it's just temporarily is extremely distressing for a bender. They rely on it so much that when it's taken away from them, they don't feel like themselves anymore. Ty Lee genuinely terrified Katara because she's fast and agile enough to quickly close gaps and dodge any attacks that may be thrown her way and once she's close, it's game over. In a world where bending rules supreme, Ty Lee has an ability that makes her look like their version of the boogeyman, even if she's a lovable goofball who prefers to play rather than harm.
"You're not prettier than we are." - Ty Lee
Ty Lee rendering Katara helpless is proof that being a great bender will only get you so far. Strength, conditioning, and strategy matter just as much in a fight. Team Avatar wouldn't win the war without Sokka's strategies, even with Aang on their side
Indeed. Worst mindset is thinking bending makes you invincible.
However once katara and toph got hit it became significantly harder for her to do it again. Once people recognize the threat ty lee poses it becomes significantly harder for her
The look that she gave to Zuko when they were going to cut the line was almost like worrying about his safety, and then she like 10mins later betrays Azula. It would have awesome to have her on team avatar for a bit
1:41 Stay the hell away from Sokka.

It's a major bummer that the show didn't have Aang and Ty Lee as friends doing shenanigans. They would have gotten along so well, getting up to fun shenanigans, maybe even making Katara jealous, but Aang seeing Ty Lee like a long lost fellow Airbender relative.
That would’ve been nice.
I agree with everything except the Katara jealous part. Not every female character should be reduced to always having to play the role of the jealous girlfriend.
@@nkbujvytcygvujno6006 I never intended to solely reduce Katara to just a jealous girlfriend. It seemed somewhat what would happen, given her attitude in the Kyoshi Warriors episode, and to help set up her and Aang's coupling at the show's climax. I tried to structure my sentence to indicate that although fans might see Aang and Ty Lee as a possible couple, they might be more like siblings, whilst Katara has to acknowledge her own growing feelings, Ty Lee helping as a catalyst for her realization, which Ty Lee might quite enjoy knowing she helped in a matchmaking.

I love Ty Lee! She's one of my favorite characters! Ty Lee, Katara, and Toph are my favorite girls from any cartoon ever.
❤💙💚
A badass girl with a good personality. It's why she's my favorite female character.
Same!
I find it interesting that out of everyone, Suki is the only one who actually could stand her ground against Ty-Lee. It's even more interesting considering she ends up joining her group!
Fun fact: If you look closely, whenever Ty Lee blocks someone's chi... she uses the tip of her fingers, like she did against Katara. After hitting Sokka's head with her hand... she switched tactics and started jabbing her opponents, like she did against the Earth Kingdom soldiers in the Drill episode.
I always love ty lee and sokka's interaction
She looks so proud taking out all the dai lee agents
3:25 That moment when the series don't ship your favorite character with the character that you want
We all had a crush at her as a Kid :D
Nope
I like that as goofy as it is Sokka figured a great defense and that was to loosen up and do some movements that aren’t normal for fighting but great for dodging prods to your pressure points.
I think what really sold me on Ty Lee is the scene with the bear. I don't know why that cracks me up every time. She became like my second or third favorite character on the show. It Her and Soka had great chemistry. I just wish she got more screen time.
Ayo 2:41 this shit was so badass when I was a kid…Suki was the shit for going toe to toe with Tylee
1:57 My reason to watch the Beach Episode!!!
SIMPPPPP
Came to watch some chi blocking… rewarded with 3:38 😁😬😁
Girlie ran faster than Azula’s fire diy jet pack😭💀
That moment when she gets in Sokka’s face and calls him a cutie while Toph launches her across the room is gold.
I love how ty lee just chi block sokka's feet HAHAHA
How did ty lee chi blocking?
@@daniellalagria5922 you mean chi block?
Yas
@@daniellalagria5922 Ty Lee was a formidable hand-to-hand combatant, often utilizing chi blocking, a unique form of martial arts that targets pressure points located in the human body. By striking these, she was able to disrupt an individual's chi flow and temporarily paralyze them, thereby also preventing the victim from bending for a period of time.
Can we just adknowledge that she disabled the Dai Li all by herself?
Don't let the bubbly demeanor fool you,she is a real threat.
Ty Lee becoming a Kyoshi Warrior at the end of the Series was definitely one of the finest moments of the Last Airbender Anime. And of course in the comics she became a great member of Team Avatar.
The first cartoon crush you never forgets.
Ty Lee is one of my favorite hero/villain. She’s awesome, cute and fierce. My kind of girl.
1:57 Ty Lee is awesome!
