100% I took 6 months, got rid of everything, threw a tent on my motorcycle and drove around the country and slept in the woods. Most connected to myself I’ve ever been.

It's so sad that people like to call minimalists, "bums with nothing". It's insane. They also don't understand that humans in their natural environment have things that are called mango trees. You pluck a fruit and you eat it. Not hard. I was thinking of joining a tribe in the jungles of Costa Rica at one time in my life, and my whole zombie ass family, was like "your just gonna give up on life" and "sleep in a tent" in the jungle? It's so sad man......

Omg ! I really relate to you . I sleep in a tent in my garden whenever I can ! My friends think I’m eccentric but honestly
1, I sleep like the dead, 2, I go to sleep and wake up to bird song and nature 3, it’s more comfortable to sleep flat 4, it connects and grounds me to the earth. The dogs keep me company and it’s just the best. 8 hrs all the way. Thanks Rich, Love you and your guests. Xx
When I lived in Spain my grandmother had a beach apartment. She told me I should try sleeping on the balcony. I had the best rest ever! Sleeping on a cot hearing the sea waves crash and getting the fresh sea air... there was nothing like it. Highly recommended!
OMG you are so right!!!!! Same experience at age 12 on the Island of Domenica and a couple of years later, the coast of Istria. Nothing compares. Great comment.
What about cars, trucks, business, drunk people on the street, people yelling... All those noises.

I love that RR does this - I totally get it. I installed floor to ceiling windows in my bedroom which I open every night. The night air flows in and it's like sleeping outdoors with all the comforts of indoors. If the night is cool I just pile on another blanket. It's wonderful to feel the subtle rhythms of nature and watch the shadows outside change as the night sky and moon change. It's peaceful, lovely, and connects me to the rhythm of the earth. Thanks for sharing this with us Rich. Love it!
Beautifully explained. Totally agree, nothing feels better than tuning yourself into nature and the outdoors while you sleep, especially in training cycles or with the goal of increasing or maintaining self-created productivity and creativity.

thanks so much for the video..i had to pitch a tent out back due to some construction in the house which made breathing very difficult. the construction is almost done; i could go back inside but i am loving sleeping in the tent soooo much. i don’t know how to describe it exactly, but i am incredibly happy sleeping in the tent. i have a very nice mattress and tons of blankets, the coziness factor is off the charts especially when the dogs join me. they seem to love it also. yes the sleep quality is very very good. the only downside is when neighbors use dryer sheets, the air quality gets very bad for the duration. the best is the sound of the rain on the tent/fly, absolute heaven.
One of my favorite passages from that brilliant forgotten book, The Once and Future King: "The boy slept well in the woodland nest where he had laid himself down, in that kind of thin but refreshing sleep which people have when they begin to lie out of doors. At first he only dipped below the surface of sleep, and skimmed along like a salmon in shallow water, so close to the surface that he fancied himself in air. He thought himself awake when he was asleep. He saw the stars above his face, whirling on their silent and sleepless axes, and the leaves of the trees rustling against them and he heard small changes in the grass. These little noises of footsteps and soft-fringed wing-beats and stealthy bellies drawn over the grass blades […] at first frightened or interested him, so that he turned to see what they were, then soothed him, so that he no longer cared to see what they were but trusted them to be themselves, and finally left him altogether as he swam deeper down deeper and deeper, muzzling into the scented turf, into the warm ground, into the unending waters under the earth."

I think sleeping in a tent takes us back to when we were kids camping in the wilderness or just our backyard. Life seemed less complicated .
Sleeping directly or almost on the earth has a charge which goes deep within you. The closer you sleep from ground the better for your well being as you get grounded as walking barefooted.
Due to my snoring, my husband of 23 years and I decided to do separate bedrooms. As many of the commenters noted, it works great! Now we both get good sleep. We are also more intentional about connecting and intimacy because of that. It truly is a win-win!
Home builders in my area now label what traditionally was the "Guest Bedroom" as "Snore Room"....Brilliant!

I've been sleeping in a tent in my backyard in Arizona for 10 years or more during the warmer weather. I toss and turn in a normal bed room but sleep like a baby outside. And when I have to get up to pee (yeah, I'm an old guy) I love being able to look at the stars a bit before getting back in the tent. I'm glad I found this video. I have been loving your podcasts with Zach Bush which are rocking my world! Thanks!
Yess dude. I camp a lot in the desert and on the beach. Always sleep so well and love see the stars if I wake up at night.

We've been following your example and camping in our garden the last couple of nights. So far we've been woken up by rain twice ('who needs a tent outer in the Summer!', we thought), and last night I woke up alone at 3am because the neighbours chatting kept my husband up hehe. Still enjoying it, much cooler than the house and the cat makes less fuss when he visits us for a cuddle 😻
I totally agree. I spent a month sleeping outside this year and otherwise I sleep some nights outside every month, even during the cold winter here in Norway.
I do a lot of camping myself and I know that if i had to I could happily carry everything I need on my back. Hiking for multiple days gives you a great perspective on what you really need. Thanks for sharing Rich. Loving the current videos, great editing by Reece.

So awesome rich I sleep in a tent here in Tahoe I just walk out in the forest and find a super flat mellow spot and just relax and listen to nature learn so much from you rich
“If I lose everything” - - not enough people remove themselves from the comfort zones of mainstream “normal” life - especially at home. We are too comfortable, we forget that it could all be taken away. Then what will we do? Creating a life that is a little rough around the edges at times teaches us to be okay with basic and simple. AND IT CAN STILL BE COMFY. Yes I can afford a new van, but there’s something about driving around my aircooled 80’s VW that keeps me in check, makes me work a little bit harder, be uncomfortable a little. Absolutely love this! I sleep the best when I'm away camping for the temperature and connection to nature. A few nights this summer here in Barcelona I've slept on the terrace with a beanbag and pillow and sheet and it was incredible. So much cooler, I fell asleep watching the stars, and the air (even though its a city) felt so much better for me!
Wow! I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I loooove sleeping outdoors in a tent. I also feel as though the tent becomes my cocoon and that makes me feel protected as well as cozy and peaceful.
I live in Canada though so most of the year I am inside.

I totally get this.. I am preparing to hike the PCT in the spring and I will be living out of a backpack and tent for about 5 months.Most people think I have lost my mind but I can't wait! Hiking and sleeping in nature is therapeutic.

Thank you for exposing me to the philosophy of the stoics. I came over from the 2 hour Goggins video. Man, I lived in 2 different RV's for about a decade of my life, because outside of the house is outside of the electric wire frequencies and more oxygen rich, with natural light circadian brainwave enhancement. I was desperately homeless, but it was the the greatest luxury. such ironic dichotomy. You sleep with an intention to survive and generate dream ideas to make life improvements for all humanity. Thanks for doing that Goggins interview and sleeping in a tent man. We learn so much in the struggles for good life.
You are so right, some people just do not understand that even this small thing can make you feel happier and alive, then living in big and polluted city or a flat you do not like and should pay for it money it doesn't cost even. Really my applauses for such open minded and free views 👏👏👏
I do a lot of camping here in England, and I have to admit I also sleep better outside than I do in my own home. Great to hear I am not the only one. :)
Cheers to that! You can do it in cold climates too. I use an air mattress with a thin futon on top of it and sleep like a king. An old comforter with a down camping top quilt clipped together and a hoodie sweatshirt with the hood up and I'm comfortable even when it dips into the low 20's. You're at home, so using a good mattress and pillow is totally do-able. I would resist the temptation to use a heater of some sort. I haven't found the need for one yet.
The idea of sleeping in a tent in your own home is so appealing. You look so cosy in your little nest! 🤗 I loved this video, the footage, the editing, the flow,... so good to watch such quality content on YT 👍
I love this! I’m 57 and about to hit the road in my Toyota vitz 🚙 next month to travel New Zealand 🇳🇿 this summer - camping ⛺️,hiking, ocean swimming, ....✨
This is probably why I love camping so much.. Not only do you get a sleep filled with fresh air, but also - falling asleep to the sounds of crickets, frogs, and the rustle of trees is such an enjoyable experience!
I've been falling behind on both sleep and productivity! However, I'm not giving up and thanks for reiterating the importance of sleep. My sleep deprivation has led to me experiencing short term memory loss. My eyes are always red and I always feel so fatigue in the eyes, but not in my body.
All the time, I force myself to sleep and my thoughts keep going for hours and I end up thinking all night with my eyes shut instead of resting. It's exhausting!

This is something I've been saying for a long time. I do have a 3 season two man tent from Cabelos, and I think it's great. Thanks for saying that. I thought it was just me who like sleeping outdoors. Love your POD cast. Peace my friend.
I think you touched on the issue of anxiety and I think also solitude while sleeping. I slept in a tent, in a 100 year old church I bought. But then again, that's a story for another day.

I grow up sleeping on the roof of our house. That was common & traditional for people at that country. Houses were designed with flat, tiled roofs (turning them into decks), & lined with metal beds, the beds stayed on the roof all year long, they were placed in a way that you could not see them from the street & gave them privacy. My parents slept on an upper section of the roof that was secluded. The weather was like LA, where it was hot summer days & cool nights. I remember being covered with a blanket & looking at the stars, a vision that I will never forget, it was a bliss...when we walk up, we folded the mattress in half & covered the whole bed with a special dust & weather proof cover.
Fast forward, I moved to LA, I built my 3 story house on the hill with sweeping views of the city that reached to the ocean, & made sure that part of my roof was a flat deck, so I could recreat my amazing experience.
Unfortunately, it was so windy up there, that I could not do it, the deck had open rails, & the design did not work with adding wind glass barriers, my intent was sleeping in the elements, not in a tent.
I also desined my neighbor's rebuilt house after a devastating fire. They wanted a roof/deck like mine, but since they were much lower than me, they did not have the wind problem. Their kids spent many nights in a tent on the roof deck 🙂

I live in Prague and there's not even enough room to pitch up a tent. In SoCal it's a different story. I don't wanna look like I'm making excuses, though. So I've now made the decision that I will sleep on the terrace. If it works out it can be more than one night. Let's see what happens 😁💚🌱👍
😍😍my daughter and I slept on mattresses on the deck in Kansas a lot. Loved it. Better than a tent, but you do sometimes have to wake up and pull the mattresses in out of the rain. Here in Texas I would love a futon on the patio. Not ready to sleep on the ground without a tent yet 😌

If I would live in CA I would probably do the same, but where I live in Germany it's mostly too cold, especially in the winter to do it 🙈 I love it that it works for you and you do it. Camping feeling every night 😍
Buy a sleeping bag for cold weather and an insulated air-mat. You'd be surprised at the pleasures of sleeping out in the cold in a cozy sleeping bag.
I was just thinking the same, but I live in Finland where it's even colder. I'm not sleeping outside when it's -15c in the winter :D
exactly and is also after few days all thing will be moist and after one-week moldy condition. For many people, this can be a deadly idea

I've done some winter camping and as long as it's only around 0c, it's not bad, especially if you have a way to warm up as soon as you're out of your tent (fire, house, whatever). When it starts dropping to -10c though, it's extremely difficult keep your face/head comfortable enough for a decent night's sleep. There are some awesome vegan, synthetic fill, sleeping bags and pads that are awesome for super cold temps. Maybe if I get into a Master program in Germany, I'll test our your winters myself!
I feel like cosleeping with your spouse wasn't super common till recently. My grandparents always had separate beds and old sitcoms always had them separate as well .my husband and i started sleeping separately and let me tell you its just better sleep lol. Maybe I'll get an outside tent
I would love to have my own room & bed. I’m chronically sleep deprived. Its either my son who is scared of monsters, the cats/s waking me up or my husband.
I live in a densely populated city and I used to sleep outside on my balcony until my neighbors complained. I don't know if it was the "fresh" air or the novelty of sleeping somewhere new, but it was the best month of sleeping I had in a long time.
The neighbors took offense??? Did you snore too loudly? Were they using their balcony at same time you were sleeping on yours?? That’s insane
Love it. I slept outside beside my house one night in January with my sons in a Quincy ( snow fort). I'm from Manitoba Canada so... minus 20 Celsius is a NICE winter day. For 4 months a year I could maybe do that

Hi Rich :-) Some years ago, I slept in a tent during two months and I loved it exactly for the reasons you share. Since that moment, it's impossible for me to sleep, even in winter time, without my windows wide open, Just to feel the fresh and natural air. It's so healthy for me
This is so funny because I sleep on my lanai while my family sleeps inside. I love the nature sounds and fresh air. I'm so glad I found this.
Currently I am a city dweller but have lived in Indonesia. I slept in a village bamboo house on the floor for 12 months windows but no shutters or glass. I loved it. In the city I hear crows and magpies (in the wee small hours) which I listen to, to put me to sleep when I can't. I miss living outdoors.

From my memory some of the best nights sleep I have ever had have been outside, waking up first thing in a tent with the fresh air always felt like bliss. There's a reason we open the windows in the morning to wake up and feel fresh.
i sleep in my mini-van in my drive way and i love it. its quiet, the moon roof is open with mosquito net so i can see the stars,.....i feel the cool air, i open the side door or the hatch back (also with mosquito nets)....in the morning i feel rested, connected to the earth......i feel like i belong....and much more than just another stupid day. i feel like it gives me meaning.

calabasas is a beautiful place. i am familiar with it. sleeping in a tent is great for realigning with the sunset and sunrise. i experience this when camping. away from the artificial light our bodies and minds rejuvenate and relax much better. and seeing the stars at night - priceless.
Sleeping on the ground or close to it is definitely beneficial. I still do it even though iam into the afternoon of my life. It's a kind of romance with my swag
I hear ya. I had similar thing with my ex she liked a warm room, had an electric blanket on the bed. The night we broke up we were in an old mansion hotel. She put every heater in the room on. I didn't sleep a wink. I got out of that bed as i was starting to sweat and sat up all night plotting my escape. I took a train home next day and left her to it. Slept great ever since :)

I have the exact opposite experience of sleeping in a tent, but whatever works is great. I grew up without street lights and so am afflicted with needing pitch dark and silence to get a good quality sleep. That is quite hard to find these days.

I find it interesting that you and your family have had this beautiful, modern, expensive house and slowing the people inside have been moving to live closer to the nature around it. It's pretty poetic.
I have a tremendously difficult time sleeping indoors more often than not, but when camping or sleeping outdoors, I'm almost always out immediately. I have a lot of issues with indoor allergens and heat up far too much to use more than even a thin microfiber blanket on most nights. I've honestly been thinking about setting up my 4-person tent out in my front yard and trying to do this a few nights a week.
Thanks for sharing this. I tried I and it was incredible. I had cup of tea a tap light and a book fell asleep within 40 minutes.

I slept in a hammock at the North camp at the Grand Canyon and it was awesome. On hot nights, I now sleep outside on my patio in my hammock. I get it.

Very true ! I sometimes camped in mountains in UAE, sleeping under stars is the best sleep I’ve ever got in my life.

I'm 65 and I still love camping and sleeping in a tent .
I totally get what you're saying and feel the same. Ive been a vanner over 5 years. I sleep the best in the van. I often times have to do petsits and no matter how nice/posh the house, bed or couch is i still don't get the same type of sleep as i do in the van. Sleeping outdoors really helps with the circadian clock.

I understand about you getting a great nights sleep and connecting with nature. I would be sad to be in a marriage where I didn’t wake up next to my partner or could reach out in the night and touch them. It’s such a special part of being in a relationship. However I guess not everyone values this
I learned sleeping in my cozy Odyssey is the Way to Rest Best! My cat got out for 18 days and returned on Earth Day! So I slept in my Van waiting for his return and since Earth Day, we have slept in the Van!

i live in the city and i sometimes put up my tent in my living room and sleep in it when it's not convenient to go out. it somehow brings me back to the mountains where i camped.
