What amazes me most about the US, is just how built up and congested everything is. Just like the DTP's engine bay, there's just no space anywhere! 😉 👍
@@JonathanWiese-o9w a reliable and uncomplaining person. "he was a real trooper for going on while he was feeling less than his best". So no, I mean troopers.
What friendly fellas ! Americans really are so welcoming and generous with their hospitality. That looks like a great trip ! Wouldn't it be great that when the project is finished, Chuck and Mike could visit you in the UK for the big unveiling !
I love Panteras. The best place for 351 Clevo parts, mods etc is Australia, the Falcon GT and GTHO came with them. Oiling issues were the big problems racers ran into. There are lots of GT/GTHO shops that offer parts in Aussie to check out.
New to the channel but great car. Make sure that the transporters/handlers take photos and video of the car at each step of the journey. I bought my defender back to the UK from NY with no damage and then the guy who delivered it to me scraped it 100 yards from the house….
Be careful with the 1/4 windows; they are very expensive. Also, take care of that trunk insert, as they are in rare supply in that good of condition. Wilkinson Pantera, Pantera parts connection, PI Motorsports, and Hall Pantera should have most of what you need. Also, should you need deck lid lifts. SACHS SG314005 is the part number for some, which last spring were about 10 dollars compared to the 200 dollars most places charge. My dad has a 73 we just finished refreshing the trim and body panels and painted them in Bullitt Dark Highland Green. Good luck to you.
On the move Jack, I'm pretty sure that the preparation for paint and the paint application has not been done real well. The large section inside the engine bay that's peeling is only "tip of the iceberg" stuff. Paint applied in way too heavy coats, this is probably the same reason for the wheel arch surface cracks shown in your first video. Big project, I hope it doesn't break the bank.
Glad you've got a Pantera, I remember going to the DTOC track days back in the late 80s and 90s with my old man and the De Tomaso owners were such a friendly bunch as you are discovering with the kind help of these 2 gents in the US.
Congratulations on your acquisition! You must have really charmed Anita to convince her to release the Pantera to you, and allow it to travel outside of the States. Seeing you beside it outside the garage, I thought: "Now *that's* a proper Jack car!". Your Black Panther is sure to produce loads of great content, and shall be a perfect fit for your garage, and your channel. Bon voyage! See you back home.
That's my dreamcar from that era. I'd love a restomodded Pantera with updated suspension and an engine pushing 700bhp. That seems to be the sweet spot where usable horsepower meets insanity. I love Panteras so much❤
Great project. If the gearbox needs attention Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead used to look after the ZF 5DS 25/2, which as you probably know is what yours is, that I raced in an Chevvy engined Ultima some years ago. Also may I suggest that you do not run the car with chrome plated suspension springs, a very American thing, as they can snap because of hydrogen embrittlement.
Love these stories where an "average guy," relying on his own skill and gumption, creates something as desirable as anything a rich man can write a check to own.
You've got to love American car culture, beautiful garages with all the toys, guys who can pull and rebuild engines, spares and upgrades galore. Over here if you can change a wheel you're in the top 2%!!!
I am old enough to remember riding my bicycle past a Lincoln/Mercury dealer about 1972 and seeing a brand new Pantera sitting on the showroom floor amongst the chrome-laden big Lincolns and huge Mercury sedans. The Pantera looked so out of place next to those other cars. But those Lincoln/Mercury dealers must have been so happy to have some that exotic to sell (and to generate showroom traffic too!). Too bad the experiment didn’t last longer.
Good Luck with the project. In my humble opinion: the Pantera is the original roadgoing version of the GT40. All the best with the channel. Looking forward to every episode.
Great project, love the car and what fantastic support from your American friends. Got to say though, that I reckon they've kindly underestimated what that will cost you to complete 🤔
You have two great mentors there Jack, jesus how many people wish their local store had a collection of nuts n bolts etc like that, and yes, you have alot to do, and will probably have issues, it's to be expected when you think
Absolutely beautiful car! The moment you first saw the car and realised it could be yours must have been one of those top 5 moments in your life. Congrats!! I am excited for you.
Absolutely loving this DeTomaso project, get a stroker kit for the 351cui engine to get a 427cui motor with 4x 2 barrel THROTTLE BODIES, that Le Mans spec gearbox deserves a muscular Le Mans type engine. 😊
Satin black "undercoat" could be UPOL Raptor. Popular in the US for a hard wearing truck bed paint, and used elsewhere. I did the underside of my Esprit with it, and chassis.
Hats off to Mike & Chuck for their expertise & friendship in helping Jack with this most fantastic of projects. I'm pretty sure Mike has been on an episode of Jay Leno's Garage talking about Pantera's.
@@576103great to see you helping Jack this will be such an interesting project for us all to watch, and so nice the car has moved from a family who clearly loved that Pantera to someone who is going to give it the same love. Looking forward to next updates on this such a rare car in the U.K.

A dream car. I visited the light blue DeTomaso factory in Modena when working in Italy and helped a colleague to source some parts. They had a nice little show room of their racing cars from smaller formula 2 and 3 I believe. The factory looked rather dodgy though.
Looking forward to seeing how the restoration goes on this. I hope you bought those guys a couple of pints at least, very friendly helpful chaps they were!
I would recommend ANSA (Italian of course) mufflers. Nothing I've ever heard sounds as good. It's not extreme in any way, just very good and satisfying. Not at all noisy at cruise or normal driving, and creates the most wonderful roar at high rpm. A sound that if you could bottle it, it'd sell like hotcakes. Also drop the crap American intake and carburetor. Get real Webers, just for the sheer looks, if not to mention the absolutely spine tingling intake roar they make. As an alternative, get injection disguised as Weber carbs. Since the get air served the same way as the carbs, they sound much the same, but are easy to tune, and problem free since their electronically adjusted and computer controlled. A great restomod imhop
I certainly hope you sorted those two lovely fellas out with a few beers for all their help! Great stuff, looking forward to seeing your progress back home 👌🏼👍
Please be careful of that clutch. Maybe the friction plate wasn't well aligned but you should never need to use the bolts to pull up the gearbox or tighten one side when the other is still 1/2" or more away as at 3:48 onwards. Use a trolley jack to support the gearbox and if it doesn't slide nicely on, check the clutch plate is centralised and the bush or roller bearing between the crank and input shaft is right size and correctly installed - forcing the gearbox on when misaligned will damage it!!
Phantastic projekt! In Amerika they don't wash cars, they shower them in pain i always say. So don't worry about the paint as long as everything is rost free!

That is not a reflection on the late previous owner (Jim) it is just how we all tend to do projects, put together what we have and then source the rest of the parts which is exactly what you are doing Jack. As for the paint work I have been thinking more about it and I came to the same conclusion as you. Although I am not an expert I did spend a short time working in a body shop when I was younger. It wouldn't be right to speculate as to the quality current finish but you are always at the mercy of the paint shop. Do remember that you know of a very good paint shop here in the UK so there should be no worries there. Thanks to Chuck and Mike for all there help and to you Jack for filming as much as you could. 👍👍
Absolutely loving this, what a stunning car and a great project. I have a friend in Arizona who is just as nice as these guys and he even let me drive his 650 bhp Camaro ZL1 to dinner. I thought you’d messed up selling the influenzo but now I’m just looking for more content on this beauty.
The blistering cracks in the paint job is from body filler. It happens from extreme temperature changing in the weather making the body metal expand and shrink result is body filler cracking under the paint job. do the fridge magnet test to see how thick the body filler is if the magnet don't stick to the car means very deep damage was done to the car
From the factory I think it was flat black and where the paint bubbled, underneath is what it should look like. How a bubble that big came to be, is mind boggling. I think it would look better body color instead of black IMO.
