  • The much anticipated Honda Talon 1000 X and R machines are finally here and we didn't hesitate to get our hands on one and start testing! Honda is claiming that these new machines are the best built and best engineered vehicles in their class. We set out to find out for ourselves what this new side x side is capable of and how it compares to the other full sport machines that are currently available on the market. The new DCT transmission is probably the biggest stand out of this new machine as it comes in place of the industry standard CVT clutch design. No more broken belts or worry of slipping the belt! That amongst all the other features of the new Talon Sport Side By Side make it the talk of the industry. Watch and find out what Eric thinks of the exciting new Honda 1000R.

    I think it’s great that it holds a ton of oil. It means it’s going to run cool and live a long time. It’s the same reason there 600cc and 1000cc street bike engines are so bullet proof.

    The auto trans will no doubt get better gas mileage than a belt driven machine. You don't have to be so high in the rpm range to get it to move. And no more broken belts!!

    • @1gr8oil
      @1gr8oil 5 років тому +1

      dunerinaz....Okay, what if the Computer goes south on the Honda DCT or the Transmission itself breaks? Is the belt system going to be less money to replace over the Honda Talon? I think so! Other machines use the belt system, just because they work well.

      @@1gr8oil They work, but saying they work "well" is bit of a stretch.

    • @1gr8oil
      @1gr8oil 5 років тому +2

      @@pv2xeek Well, depending on how the machine is used, and the type of person using them, the belt system works very well. That's why the CVT system has been around so long on nearly ALL side X sides, as well as snowmobiles. I'll put it this way. A CVT belt will cost around $120.00 to $150.00 to replace, and again in most situations, that is what will fail. What would it cost to replace the Computer that operates the DCT, or the DCT itself.
      I'm mot saying the DCT is not a bad design, but we don't know at this point how well the DCT will last in this application, where we do know how the CVT systems perform very well in many applications, as they have done for many, many years.

      @@1gr8oil Whats easier to break a belt or a computer or a dct tranny.Pretty sure you need to double the cost of the belt because you always need a spare when you're riding so thats $300 dollars.DCT is way more reliable and longer lasting than a belt.

    14:40 it’s always an open differential. Your slow mo footage shows it. It just uses the brakes to control torque distribution which is not as good as a locker splitting torque dynamically to the wheel with the most traction.

    I have found that when I am driving the Honda 1000R it can be a jerky ride when you are trail riding in 2nd or 3rd gear. If you put the 1000R in low range then most of the jerky feel is eliminated and you can still drive any speed you would like. unless your going over like 50MPH.

    To soften up your throttle jerkiness as you were concerned about.
    When on a slower trail section. Switch to manual mode and run in a taller gear than you normally or the machine in automatic mode would choose.
    This will reduce the amount of torque applied in regards to on and off throttle effect.

    I love DCT and have put almost 130k miles on street units in two GTI. I hope the gas mileage is good because we often do rides of over 100 miles with nowhere to fill up. I am also leery of the less than 8 gallon tank. Please follow up with some mileage info. 30 inch tires are a minimum for southern Utah desert. I would really like to know more about how the Talon works with all same size/offset wheels and 30” desert style tires. If I buy a sxs it’ll be this. Fire department owned a Polaris and it was nothing but trouble. Didn’t have an alternator so you actually would have to drive it to charge it. Couldn’t just start it once every week and let it idle. And that belt just sucked. Had to drive it into a shallow creek and one the belt got a bit of moisture on it she would just spin.

    By going to a twin disc clutch, if you wanted to run taller tires, could you without bogging down the motor? Thanks for sharing.

    • @rmatvmc
      @rmatvmc  5 років тому +4

      Good question. It is a Dual Clutch Transmission not a twin disc. I am curious about larger tires. We are actually throwing 30's on ours and it looks like they will clear fine. The initial engagement has a direct feel and it doesn't seem like there is much slipping and i'm hoping no bogging. To me, that means less heat buildup and that is less wear and tear. The Talon actually has a warning light for when the clutches are getting too warm. We are throwing the 30's on it and time will tell.

      @@adamneill9237 Thank You for the confirmation. I've never been overly thrilled with CVT. Coming from a wolverine 350 5 spd semi auto to a grizzly 700 CVT there were several issues I wasn't very thrilled about.
      Having to always be on the throttle just to be in motion seems counter intuitive. (I realize many cvt will freewheel) but the constant engine braking is annoying. Gotta be revving high when I could just be up shifting. Granted my displacement doubled but with a 5 gal capacity and averaging 20 mpg that's only 100 miles per tank.
      One particular ride we were out for 12 straight hours. Towards the end mine was cutting out on corners, I thought it was overheating but I was just running out of fuel. (Light never came on) a few of the other guys had already run out and were borrowing gas just to get home. Not sure how many miles we did that day.
      No control, no coasting, no down shifting. No crawling around at low rpm's drawing little little attention to myself, always making the same amount of noise.
      Another critical issue I found is when I hit the brakes hard before cornering and the rear slides, letting off the brakes doesn't control the slide, it's a delayed reaction as the engine needs to catch up to the wheels in speed. I've never heard anyone mention or notice it, but I'm certain it's resulted in undesired results/injuries etc. Especially if the rider isn't aware or expecting this delay. It's a safety issue.
      Final feeling, I don't feel as though this type of fuel consumption is warranted, and refueling after so few miles shouldn't be a concern. It's not going to change so my only choice in most cases is to accept the drawbacks and enjoy the performance advantages. The industry isn't going to change direction at this point.

    GREAT video and format!! So, the i4wd has me concerned?? Hmmmm, i wonder how it would do in straight up MUD or a swap condition?? The kind that you see Rubicons or Polaris with 29" Mud tires with front locked and floating pulling forward. The CanAm with it visco front has always had me concerned in comparison to a TRUE LOCK front axle option.
    Having an open diff and using brakes to transfer to the tire with more grip...sounds like traction control in cars. Even cars say to turn off traction control in super slippery conditions. So that sensation that you felt during that climb you talk about...is totally normal. NOT my idea of good for a SxS, ATV, or UTV. The sensation that you talk about with the DCT trans is also completely normal for DCT transmissions. It is essentially a manual transmission that is electronically shifted. Part of the inherent design.

    I know this video is a year old but I just had the chance to drive one for about 30 miles recently and here are my opinions from a Can Am Commander owner.
    I was very surprised how rough it was over whoops and light bumps and I have my Commander set at the stiffest setting.
    Service interval for a Commander is 3000km (1800 miles) compared to this Honda at 600 miles.
    Felt a bit cramped inside compared to my Commander but it was comfortable nonetheless.
    I was surprised how loud it was. Everyone complains about the loudness of the Commander but this thing was just as loud if not louder.
    Fit and finish was very nice.
    No room from extra buttons for a winch, led lights etc.
    The instrument cluster is awful! You can't see shit, seriously, very shocked how bad it was especially compared to how awesome the Commander XT cluster is. That's not a little issue.
    The Honda was very fun to drive and handled corners well at high speeds. I definitely had fun.
    Honda charges as much as a turbo Polaris or Can Am for a non turbo machine.
    A lot of people have been having a lot of transmission issues with the first year model so far. Very disappointing considering Honda's reliability reputation.
    I don't think I'd buy one but I think if you bought this machine you'd be happy.

    The Honda i4wd system is similar to Toyota's ATRAC on the Landcruisers, 4runners, and Tacomas. I absolutely love that system and it seems like Honda has executed a solid system of their own. Personally I despise the Rzr lineup but these have raised my eyebrows. I'm very interested to see how these hold up. Any plans to review the X-model?

      Why not RZR? I have not owned a Polaris anything for over a decade but my dad has 2 trail rzr and the 2008 rips up my wife's 2015 wildcat in every aspect other than suspension. His new 900 trail beats the Cat on everything including suspension. I truly appreciate honest opinions and I am brand agnostic other than Artic cat.

      @@tysleight They are over priced junk. My uncle is the GM of our local Polaris dealership and my girlfriend had a 1000 Xp Turbo. They have too many weak links. I live 1 hour from Windrock OHV and every single time someone breaks. Even brand new stock Rzr's break A arms, axle shafts, steering components, or belts. I think they are seriously flawed in their engineering. Other people love them but I am a true hater, no matter how much I want to like them... SxS's are so much more convenient than buggies but they just haven't proven themselves strong enough to handle east coast terrain.

    My 1000X is also jerky. It improved with reduced air pressure in the tires (10PSI) and after some use. The suspension needs to break in.

    The air filter setup is a problem. To clean the air filter you have to remove a large outer cover, which has 12 (I think) strong snap fasteners. Then remove 8 bolts which hold the air filter itself. When you take the large cover off there are 2 big air intakes that go directly to the engine. If you drop something (small parts, or dirt), into the intakes it disappears into oblivion. Also, any kind of an air leak in the big cover allows dirty air directly into the engine bypassing the filter. I've never seen a setup like this on a "dirt" machine.

Over all I would love to buy one just because Honda makes their stuff easy to get a lot of HP out of it. That is one thing I love they're stock slow but a few mods they becomes powerful.

    I’m glad Honda finally made something. But, I’ve watched them in action and they are underpowered, slower (despite features like Nonbelt drive smart drive trans and launch control) and small fuel tank. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a quality build but why enter the market with weaknesses that could have been easily cured before introduction. It’s not any cheaper than competitors models or you could maybe justify. Although there’s a lot of new 2019 models sitting around with reduced pricing now...maybe worth it. Hopefully the aftermarket turbo will wake it up!

    • @jaredz9507
      @jaredz9507 4 роки тому +1

      I don't know why you say there underpowered they rip we got to test drive the 2020 at King of the hammer has gobs of power would definitely clap a razor 1k but I will say it would be sick to see one with a turbo

    • @snowrulesnate
      @snowrulesnate 4 роки тому

      Jared Z not sure what clapped means but I’ve personally witnessed multiple drags races against stock RZR 1Ks and stock Talons, always close, but never seen a Honda beat it, even on pavement with launch control. Thus the fact that I stated before, Honda released it knowing it was underpowered to begin with. I’m sure the transmission helps decrease power loss compared to a belt drive in stock form but it wasn’t enough to really beat the competitors. Honda held back for some reason, probably durability and knowing most who ride it will be satisfied with it.

      104hp is fine on these. Want something more nimble, there's the 1000-x instead of the wider & longer 1000-r. Turbo kit is just over $3g's but then you're filling it up all the time(just like the turbo rzr 1000)

    • @snowrulesnate
      @snowrulesnate 4 роки тому

      Adam Neill RZR turbo is good on gas plus has full size tank compared to Talon. Another thing I’m surprised Honda didn’t address before release. There is plenty of aftermarket options though for extra fuel capacity to carry with you, just kind of a hassle.

    i4wd was the worst thing honda could have done, use brakes to even out the front spin yeah lets rob power and also lets dig out the foundation of one tire before the other spins. also they suck ass in the mud the brakes dont hold and your back to 3wd. they had it made with complete 4wd controls and locker with the pioneer, i4wd is the only reason im not buying a honda talon ill wait for after market delet kit with a real locker. have rode with many pioneers with i4wd and it just dont cut it
