Nick used to give the IPs back to the artists when they had 65 half hours or less? That’s quite a policy. Unfortunately, from the looks of things, it didn’t last very long, since all the shows after Doug’s first few seasons are still owned by them.
IIRC 65 half-hours was the metric for syndication. After 65 episodes of a 30 minute TV show, companies could sell those packages to local channels to play. I assume back then Nick just didnt see the value in any show they couldnt sell to other stations to play on the weekday afternoons or weekend blocks.

I hated most of Disney's run of Doug expect the finale episode, that was great and probably the only other good part about that run of the show besides the movie that they made in 1999 months before the series ended later in like May-June of the same year! It's sad to see them like this, bro! It really is! Rest in peace, Jumbo!
Great video Not many people have bothered looking into the history of Jim Jinkins, his company or shows, yet they’re practically childhood gems Thank you
Jim deserved so much better. He was on Nickelodeon before it was even Nickelodeon and they just dumped him and his studio, and then Disney treated him like trash too. Nick doesn't even acknowledge his role as Minus from Pinwheel. His story reminds me a bit of Will Vinton's story in a few ways. At least Jim didn't have his company stolen from him.
I was a kid with the first Doug series and loved it. Then 1SM Doug came out and it was some adjusting, but having watched some of it as an adult I think it was perfect for me. First episode is all about how the world changes around you at that age and boy did I need that assurance that change isn't necessarily bad haha.
Excellent video. I never knew Jim Jenkins and his studio was involved with so many different shows with different art styles . Hope your 2024 is going well.
Why can’t Nickelodeon buy back the rights to Doug from Disney? Just give em the rights to the first Indiana Jones films, that’s how Disney Got Oswald back.

Great video! I learned a lot from this! I had no idea that Jim Jinkins was involved in all these shows I grew up watching aside from Doug. Also, the original Doug that was on Nick took place in an elementary school. The Disney series took place in a junior high school. It was mentioned in the graduation episode way before Disney’s Doug became a thing. Just something I wanted to clarify.
It's really a shame Jim Jenkins couldn't stick around the industry, and that most of his properties are trapped in Disney's basement, never to be used again.
Even I don’t understand why Disney took Doug from Nickelodeon?, ever since when I was a kid I have been watching Doug on Nickelodeon, until later it’s now Disney’s Doug!
My sister and I grew up with Nickelodeon's version of Doug. Disney's, not so much. By the late 90s, I was entering adulthood, and she was entering her preteen years, so we weren't looking for these shows after a while. By the 2000s, I was already in my early 20s, and she was in her teens, so we don't know what kids were watching at the time. But I do feel like Jumbo Pictures was a staple of our childhoods. Oh, 90s Nick, you will be missed.
For the longest time I thought Doug was in high school but found out he's only in the 5th grade. Which means in the episode where he and Skeeter go to see The Beets, his parents let their 5th grader go to a concert in another city, and his only companion IS ANOTHER 5TH GRADER! The first episode, they send him to get food IN A TOWN THEY LITERALLY JUST MOVED TOO, like stuff is still on the truck, and they sent this kid off ON HIS OWN. Why not just give him to a kidnapper? So many Nicktoons had unaccompanied minors and child endangerment that's just laughed off later. (Except that one episode of Rugrats we don't talk about.)
Yeah, a lot of unrealistic stuff happened on this series. We don’t really think about this stuff as kids, but as an adult, it’s clearly not a good idea to let 10-year-olds go out and about like that even if the town is pretty safe.
@honeybnoir824 I don't think you realize how common it was. Kids had bikes and skateboards. They went off by themselves all the time. This helicopter parenting thing now is relatively new. A kid like Doug, who was trustworthy and wouldn't get into mischief, would have been allowed to wander about and explore the town. Especially at age 11-12. It's not especially unrealistic for the 90s.
As it's true that Disney did shut down poor Jumbo in 2000, I mostly blame Nick/ViacomCBS for under-utilizing it since Nick couldn't produce the last 13 episodes of their version of Doug. And to think with how popular Jumbo Pictures was to both Nickelodeon and Disney, I'm shocked that Cartoon Network didn't see the potential of what they could've saved, that being Jumbo Pictures. If they got to make their Doug (with Jumbo at their helm), I guarantee you Doug would go down in history as the one cartoon to jump all 3 TV juggernauts: Nick, Disney and CN, hopefully bringing peace to all crossover enthusiasts.
All media eventually loses it's popularity and trying to revive it leads to diminishing returns. Shows that last generations like The Simpsons and Dragonball are exceptions to the rule
@@sp123 I'd argue with your point, but look at what Disney did for Doug. However, I have a counter-argument for that; since both Tom Warburton and John Dilworth were in Jumbo Pictures and made successful CN shows, they can help Jim revive Doug for CN, and it's likely Billy West can't say no to reprising as his previous roles from Doug. Plus, imagine CN Doug in the early 2000's as being a part Cartoon-cartoons; having his own bumpers before commercials, interacting with the other CN originals in CC Fridays and possibly having Doug himself make Easter Egg appearances in CN shows. The possibilities are endless!
It doesn't matter if I watch it if nobody at Nickelodeon watches it. Either way, the reputational damage is done and is likely irreversible.
