- Over 8,000 games were released on Steam last year, so you need to stand out... and striking art is the key to standing out! Let's look at some beautiful (but simple) looking indie games, and analyze how we can apply those visual principles to your game.
This is a excerpt from my online school Game Dev Unlocked, where I teach people how to start, finish, and market their indie games. If you like this video, you'll probably like the school! Learn more at www.gamedevunlocked.com

When a video about art is a work of art itself...
Thanks man! Your channel rocks btw
Hi Sam, howuch money did uake on ur hardest game? Make a vid pls
Take it easy lol B-
He talked about monochromatic, notice how this video itself focusses on black and dark green. The lights in the background, his shirt, it's green!
Hey Sam
Game DEV: What are you good at?
Me: Binge watching UA-cam 😬
What you really good at now!!
so you're good at assimilating information, which makes you a sort of skill building wildcard, so whatever you're trying to do you should look for ways to replace skilll born from practice with skill born from research.
Turn that into a game then :D
I'm good at sleeping. Gonna make a game that only advances when you're sleeping... But after I wake up, gonna take a nap. bye!
At least you're good at something
GD: "What are you good at?"
Me: Ight Imma Head Out
I'm starting to get into Unity game development and I'm definetly more in tune with the technical side of things than I am artistic, so these videos are super helpful and I look forward to more!
I’m also more a technical person. Art is a very important part of a game though.
Love how you bringing light to games that are not well known. Keep it up, need more like you.
Man... you're really quick with these uploads! Felt like just yesterday when you had that poll for the next video theme.
Hopefully, one of these days I can reach your level of work ethic. Very inspiring!
Great video! Thanks for including all those examples in the description as well!
I am so glad you made a video on it I really needed it.
This video was super helpful in getting the general art direction ideas for my Cyberpunk FPS project. I picked a simple colour scheme; this combined with low poly models gives a surprisingly striking result (in my opinion). Thanks for this video, this was amazing.
Thank you for such helpful and inspiring videos, please keep em coming and dont change!
Love the tip about using less colors / monochromatic palettes, a great and actionable tip for folks figuring things out! Thanks!
"let's look at this lesser known indies" , proceeds to include Clustertruck into the list xD ... Great video, dude, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
that's true, they're pretty well known aren't they lol. Oh well!
Wow. Your videos really sparked back my motivation. Your advice is astonishing.
Invaluable advice! I feel like I'm not making progress when I'm not in Unity, but the art is what first pulls in the viewer!
This chanel is gold! Thank you so much. Im not a games dev but an app dev and I am working on launching my app very very soon (a day or two left) so this made me realise to spend a day of two on the styling now and put a lock on adding more features. Your truly, a new subscriber :)
I will definitely be Picking up your next indie game! Love your way of story telling and tbh, I hadn’t even heard of you before void. I might be the only one who played your game because I saw you at void. Loved the first tree too!
Thanks man! This is Exactly what I needed right now!
I always wanted to become a gamedev, soon I will start learning unity without any knowledge at all of coding but you and your videos worked as an inspiration and I'm grateful for that
WHOA!!! so much respect for you! I'm so, so, so, glad I subscribed; your work and knowledge and determination is AMAZING!
Thanks for the tips! they have helped me a lot in improving my game art!
You are something else, eager to see more videos about that subject
hey david, you inspire me a lot just wanted to say thank you for sharing your story with us
A friend and I recently decided to take our love of games and make something with it. We just started and are quite clueless about all the things that will be needed to make a game, but we are learning something new everyday. Thank you for these videos, they really help bring things into perspective for us and focus on things we never even thought of. Please keep making more videos like this. Thank you !!
Thanks for the confidence boost
I'm digging your learning curve. You used a noise gate on your dev console build and, tbh, it was jarring. Glad you dropped that. You vids are looking, and sounding, better and better!
These videos, are so inspiring, now I'm making an idea for my own game and your videos helped me a LOT!
What's it called? Also im working on a game myself.
A wonderful video, this truly helped push me to move foward with my project. I was developing a video game back in college in 2016, and I stopped working on it. Time to get back to work. Thankyou
This is the kind of people we need here in UA-cam ❤️
Wow that montage killed me!! I had to watch it twice. Super inspiring, I'm going to try to modify some of my art according to these tips. Also yay watercolour painting + scanning hehe that's what I do too :)
Excellent video, as always! Congrats on all the growth you’ve seen so far! 100k subs here he comes 🔥🔥🔥🚀

"What have you been doing for years?"
My collection of Adventure Time figures: "We won't help you."
you could do an adventure time style game with similar art.
All your videos are really helpful. Thanks!
thanks for the effort❤❤❤
thanks for the art tips! saved me a lot of time i would've spent experimenting.
your videos are very interesting and informative, thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. i find these videos more helpful than any other "pro" videos out there. straight forward to the point ... who knows, i might start a team to make a game!! keep inspiring us
Super good tips! Really good information here!
Between you and Thomas Brush ive finally started working on my game. You play Syfur a black cat with orange eyes. The opening scene you awake in this dark halloween inspired forest no clue of who you are or where you came from. As you traverse through these forest levels you find the Great pumpkins who will tell you about who you were and where your going. Let's just say you'll learn your not just a cat and something terrible has happened in your life. There will be enemies and bosses leading to a massive conclusion as you take this journey about finding your true self.
Its a work in progress 😃
That sounds like nameless cat
I was also thinking about that... what would people play only because something they love is in my game?........ CATS 😁
Damn, it gave me the gaming feeling. Where/when could I try your game?
Good quality content! Thank you for sharing
Ohh a David Wehle video came up in my feed. Great video as always. Miss this guy. Hope he’s doing well.
Awsome, love to see more :D
WOW This video had so much inspiration thanks man idk how to say it but Thanks
This video was really helpful
From my experience, the only reason I downloaded "Alto's adventure" was the aesthetic it brings and the soothing music it plays.
you are very correct, my friend.
Great vid once again! Thanks
Thank you for these motivating and awesome videos
Thank you for all your content. I'm also a solo developer working on an adventure game called Into The Maze. Your work and videos are a true inspiration!
Thanks for great tips!
This should be on repeat on my playlist so that every now and then, I re-watch it and redesign the size of my mountains.
Thanks! Will use these tips for my next game, It's easy to make good looking games with unity!
Great advice, thanks!
THANKS!
I love your ideas, im with you.
Hi David!
I love the work you're doing! I promise The First Tree is on my games to play list!
Just wanted to ask, it'd be great to see an animation/short film in your style. Is a tutorial of that something you would do in the future?
Thanks!
Naddy
I have been writing the game for 8 months now, thanks for inspiring
Love your content and kudos on sharing your journey. While I'm not a game dev, it's quite inspirational to see how one can put their heads down to work on something solo for many months. I've loved your setup too. What mic arm, mic and pop filter do you use?
thankyou for a great video!
Me suscribo!
Seriously, I had lost the desire to create video games, but with only 2 hours of watching your videos, you have given me so much desire to return to the development path, and take into account, that no matter how many times we stumble or what Things get tough, we must continue with our dreams. And even though you don't speak Spanish, I thank the youtube algorithm for finding me with your video of your game "The First Tree". Thank you very much for having this type of content, you are a great friend. I suscribe!

Thanks for these videos! As a game programmer I'm trying to learn as much as possible about UX, Art and graphics in videogames ( and I have to admit it's hard ç_ç ). You're a great source of knowledge! Keep up with the awesome work.
Hi, David, I would love to watch a video like this one but about vr art, where graphics (I believe) should look more realistic and tips on how to achieve that. 🙏
Such wise tips!!!
Thank you !
Really great video !
David, you really need to give us some insight into the Music and Sound Engineering you do. All your videos have interesting audio playing along.
Im good at Making visual arts and environment level designs..
I also do the 1st point you talk about
"Monochromatic colors" i use it all the time.
Ten days before I start making my first project watching this actually gives me ideas
Which software u r using for making games
I.M. Powerlifting your first project will be shit just like every1s game. Dont give up
Great content as always.

I'm not even going to make a video game, but I just watch your videos because they're very inspiring and motivating.
great tips! it's difficult for me to understand art, I'm more of a technical artist, creating a monochromatic game would be very difficult for me, but these examples are great to make something similar. Thanks!
Mhm 😍 I'm on good path with it from start 🥳
The perfect combo for game making:
*Game dev unlock* (for moral/motivational support)
*Brackeys* (for learning code)
And most important among these, last sentence of this video.
Consistent schedule and desire to complete the game.
Where do I go for the pictures and the sounds?
thanks man
you say you're not good... you're amazing!
Great video.
the first gif touched my soul
Usually, if a game looks good to me, I watch a review and/or a bit of a let's play
Man you are a mind opener
all love
❤❤❤
Thanks
Thank you for these videos! You think that 16 bits will be appealing for people if I follow these tips? or should ai be making a 8 bit game? thank you. I got the sprite of my main character ready, wanted to share here but don't know how.
Hi Dave, can you do a tutorial of how to do an automatic game saves system? (like, when you starts in a level, the game saves there) did you make the saves system of "The First Tree" with Playmaker or with a plugin? Greetings!
You are great guy and clever as a fox 😂
As an artist I wish I have this job that I really can love.. Good luck
@game dev unlocked could you make a tutorial on how you made your fox I really like the design and was wondering how it was done. Thanks
I saw alto i clicked , i love that game over any game on mobile
i love this guy
he is seriously cool
Journey and The First Tree are two games that have gotten me onto making my own game.
The feedback so far has been nice and hopeful. I can't wait till I have an alpha avaliable for people to play.
Seeing more of your videos is also inspiring to keep me going.
Hi man 😁Are there references you would recommend as a beginner to learn game design🤔
I don't know how but i found your game randomly in my steam library. After watching your videos i planed on buying it but I already have it. Did you do any humble bundles or monthy?
🔥
Nice I am starting game development soon
1:27 I think you forgot SUPERHOT
I got The first tree and Firewatch because of the art.
You needed to have include Inside by Playdead as an example of striking art. It’s also monochromatic and instantly evokes the mysterious and ominous setting of the game’s story.
People need to understand that true good graphics are fitting artstyle/ art direction to the narrative and world.
What's the name of the song during the montage?
A good term to look up for folks is chiaroscuro, many of these games like limbo use it very well
I think gameplay is king, but the magic is in the presentation of the game. Graphics, or should I say, art direction does matter, and I don't like the notion of disregarding strong visual design over gameplay. It is why something like Splatoon feels more inviting and fun than a standard shooter. The concept instantly grabs me. It is highly polished and is insanely vibrant with great catchy music. Nintendo understands this very well.
I remember crying when I watched Ori and the Will of the Wisp trailer. I've never seen anything so beautiful and got me obsessed with visuals in gaming. Visuals create a strong emotion. Back in the day I remember picking out my first Gameboy Pocket game (Castlevania Legends) due to the game art itself. I knew nothing about the series prior.
I've been really into games with more hand painted textures and Pixel art with 3D lately. Stuff like "Sifu" and "The Last Night" are gorgeous to me. Also, the Playdate got me really into monochromatic pixel art. I appreciate photorealism when done well, but often times it has a bad case of the uncanny valley and doesn't offer the same charm or emotions.
Thanks for your yesterday's mail
GD: "what are you good at?"
Me: *looks at my shitty custom maps from many games*
On which game are you working next
God dan this is good
