    One of the most important tips that not a lot of people will tell you: START SMALL!
    Want to make the next World of Warcraft? Hell yeah! But maybe don't start with that. Instead build a fun, little game introducing characters and themes from the universe of your future incredible MMORPG! Want to make a BR game that dethrones Fortnite?! If ANYONE can, it's you! But maybe don't start with that. Make a small mulitplayer game using the mechanics and weapons you wish to use before making a huge map with a bunch of different weapons, vehicles, just etc. junk. Wanting to make a story-driven adventure, one that invokes tears, angers, and happiness? I'm excited to experience such a journey! But it doesn't need to be 40 hours long, with dozens of characters having in-depth backstories.
    Write out everything your game needs to be complete, and follow your design. Add and change things here and there, but stick to your design for the most part. Don't fall into the trap of, "You know what else would be cool? This!", because you'll never finish your game. Start small, finish a few projects before taking a big bite, understand that you have what it takes, and then make that industry crushing game!

      I know this sounds crazy but, I’m twelve, and I always loved games where there were upgrades for things and they would physically change the character, or give it a new device, for example, maybe a grappling hook. So right now I’m about a month into working on a game that’s working towards that but, this is just to see what it would feel like to play it. So I’m just using pre made environments and textures, so I don’t waste too much time on those sorts of things. So right now I’m just using a sphere because that’s much easier to work with than a full on character so yeah, Hope I get it finished by the time I’m 13!

    • @Inshaine
      @Inshaine 5 років тому +9

      MrTruffles Keep grinding and you very well may! Set yourself small and obtainable weekly and monthly goals. Just don’t overwork yourself, and remember that if by chance you don’t finish by the time you’re 13 that it’s no biggie! It will be finished whenever it’s finished just stay true to it.

      MrTruffles you sound like you have a really good head on your shoulders! You're on the right track, focus on making your game fun to play FIRST, and then and ONLY THEN, worry about the graphics! You are very smart to use placeholder assets for now, because once you get your gameplay down, you can always go back and switch them out for your own assets later. Good luck, I'm sure you can do it. Just never give up on your dream!

    • @MrKlimcio
      @MrKlimcio 5 років тому +3

      @@emptynism1958 well, I'd start with the fact that some people know how to choose colours for their pictures, combine simple shapes into larger ones (like their instinct is telling themhow to break down the big picture into those shapes).

    • @emptynism1958
      @emptynism1958 5 років тому +11

      @@MrKlimcio that is color theory, my friend. It's something that people learn over a long period of time.
      You make it sound like they're born like that, but it's just something they learned. It's "skill" that you should have to be like them, not "talent".
      So if you took the time to learn the fundamentals of let's say art, you might get better at it than those you might've thought are better than you.

      @@MrKlimcio well I actually suggest you to look up certain tutorials yourself. There are alot of tutorials of all kinds of different stuff on UA-cam. Some might be very understandable for some people, but for others not. If I sent you a link to a youtube video that I picked myself, you might not like it. I don't know.
      But here's a list of things I suggest you to *look up:*
      -color theory
      -Textures(surfaces)
      -anatomy (for humans and/or animals) (which is optional)
      -robots(?)
      Now these are for a certain type of art. But in my opinion I think the first 2 are the most important, especially the first one. There are countless stuff that have countless turorials on UA-cam(clothes, liquids, ...).

    Would it interest you to make a video about asset management of all the illustrations you are making for a game? I only make fairly small games with just a handful of sprites, i don't even need to bother thinking about asset management. But i'm always amazed by how developers handle bigger project like this, the asset library must be enormous? Like what fileformats works best and what about compression? Naming schemes and folder structures? Tradeoffs between interact-ability and static sprites (interaction often means larger file-sizes, more sprites, more work etc)? Repeatability (you touched on that in this video with the candles)?, Did you set a limit to how big your games can be, ie how big the binaries for Pinstripe and Once Upon a Coma can be and what if you go over that limit, would you go back and remove assets, simplify them or try to compress them more? etc etc etc. Sure, this is not a sexy topic but it fascinates me and there should be some tips and tricks to talk about i guess.
    Anyways great video, you deserve way more views and subscribers 👍

      @lolindirlink 5 років тому +1

      keep a copy of everything in their rightful folder :P
      you'll probably have to go back to older assets anyways. this just happens. (i'm currently in this exact fase as well, and luckily the file structure is clean enough for me to understand!)
      ^ on a personal project, the only restriction is yourself.
      But when you work in a team, folder structure has to be co-operated across the board, documentation everywhere!
      it's still going to be a giant mess, but everyone should be able to navigate. this is also one of the area's where big budget screwups often take place. so there's no "100% perfect" solution. but you can put extra work and effort in what you already have.

    Wow this is amazing!. I’m starting out fresh with game development and currently I’m through planning stage. However I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing haha. I really want to find people that relate to my project and to gather a team to make it come true one day. This video has really helped me out and from what I see, I’m assuming that’s an Adobe app (I have them all yay). A little run down of what I have so far is that I’m heavily inspired by 2 games, Life is Strange and OxenFree. They play around with the consent of time and teleportation which I have found to be quite interesting. Also a Major relation in both is that they are multiple choice. To play, you get options on what you want to say or do, and whatever your choice is, there is an outcome/consequence as to what will happen next. It’s so intriguing and really brings you into the story and makes it the viewers own. Which I think is pretty neat. But anyway this really helps and I’ll look into more of your videos :)

      I rarely use *actual* vector art. However, vector art principles are super important with 2D game design, especially if you want the player to have a good idea of what in your world is interactable. Vector art principles simply should force shapes to be as simplistic and clean as possible. You can add texture and shade later, but getting those initial shapes right is crucial. Great question!

    • @thomasbrush

      Usually, I just think about what makes me tick -- what makes me *feel*. If I feel something, I want to express it creatively in games. Right now I'm super into philosophy, psychology, a few conspiracy theories, and old 80s movies. We'll see what that means for my next games!

    The "leaning into your talents" tip is a bit more difficult for me. I'm an artist, but I'm also into music, coding(obviously), and I freaking LOVE playing around with unique game mechanics and rethinking mechanics taken for granted. So, should I lean into the skill that would make the game stand out the most or just try and emphasize on every one of them?

      The best project is one that’s finished. The point of that advice isn’t to limit you to one good thing, it’s a tool to help you focus. If you try to put 100% effort into every aspect of your game, it will take forever, you will burn out, and abandon the project forever. So just pick one area that you can really make shine and build your project around that. It gives you the focus you need to build a working, finished game. Then, if you still really want to go back and add more to the other parts, you can. And you’ll already have a foundation to start from, in an already finished game, so the updates will feel more rewarding more quickly

    thank you for your short but nice insight of this almost non-existent industry in my area. i think and i think many would agree that ita super hard for some people of certain areas get into and become successful in video game industry. from pst 20years i can remember exactly 2games that realy made it : Serious sam and ahem Talking tom 👍🏼😂😂 one was made in late 90s inspired by some legendary games like Duke nukem and Doom - a memorable kick ass game for that time made by this croatian studio i cannot remember now. game was good enough to recieve a sequel and was pretty good accepted.
    Other game (Talking tom approx. 2012), was actually a talking cartoon cat which you could touch on your tablet and it would then talk back or make some noise. this recipe proved to be so successfull, that the guy or pair actually ended selling the actual code to 3rd partys so that now u have thousands of clones of this game ever since in appstores all over the globe 😂
    but, the irony is; one day Axiom Verge comes along , made by this one guy, who did everything by himself.. music coding graphics artwork promotion everything and literally murders the AAAgame industry scene with a pixeled gem that looks like it just got away out of an late-80s arcade cabinet. now thats just plain silly. Its in the game!!! (right?) 😎👍🏼

    Nice video bro, what would be amazing is if you would create a series on building a full game from start to finish which includes backrounds characters etc so people can follow too but in Godot lol not sure what engine your using. I see your using Adobe Illustrator to build the interior do you have any videos on that & how to create characters for people like me who can't draw or have the money to hire an artist thanks.
