The first part of the first dev log in a series about my adventures in 3d game development. This episode is the prologue. It catches up and sets the stage for the current build of the game, which has been in development for nearly 2 years.

It's how I mostly name my documents, titles or activities, like "essay something history 1", "group dn'd stuff" or "leader questions stuff for week 47".

You love the artstyle? It's literally been used in hundreds of shitty games, look up 3D indie games and you'll see this "artstyle" everywhere. Basically, they want to spend as little cash as possible and graphics are expensive, so what do you do? You use bland basic colors, yikes.

Actually, I want to use as little time as possible. I'm a solo indie dev with no budget. I have a degree in game art and know how to make AAA art, but don't have the time or resources to make a Skyrim clone, nor do I want to, tbh. And I hate to be that guy, but like... do you happen to have an actual example of this exact artstyle in another game? I'd love to see a few examples. My style is actually pretty unique for a 3d indie game as far as I know. And also... couldn't the same thing be said about AAA games? "Oh, Call of Duty looks just like every other shitty AAA game that has millions of dollars to spend. Battlefield, Rainbow Six, Counterstrike".

3d high-poly games look like any other 3d game and just so dull and bland. This game is unique
i adore the 4 slot inventory system. If i ever make a game im adding that thing
Oh man. I did too.... but it failed to keep up with the rest of the design. I had to change it to an 8 slot wheel. I'll show it off in the next devlog. : )
Michael Kocha have you thought of a progressive slot system where you earn more slots as you level up and have it start at 4 and gradually increase to around 8 to 10
man tbh your fan base is really wholesome at the start idk in the future but now ima rewatch i think i liked watching ur dev logs was because the game looks really good

As a dev making my own games this devlog stuff seems super awesome and something that makes me think about doing it. My only real hesitation is that I'll always feel guilty that whatever time i sink into making devlog videos and managing a youtube account could be time I spend working on my game. I wish I could just clone myself.

Oh my god, I've been watching playthroughs of this game but I didn't know there was a devlog! I'm excited for this.
Okay. Okay. Get this. I was JUST looking into the sudden reappearance of Cube World and analyzing how after all that time things got changed to streamline it (interesting idea and I didn't have an issue with it), but time marched on and nothing new was added and Minecraft rpg mods and what not just didn't appeal to me because Minecraft's visual and animation approach has never appealed to me (nor the extreme focus on building).
So I'm sitting around my room, playing unrelated games, and thinking how much I just want a simple, but clean looking adventure RPG, hopefully co-op, and today what should happen but this completely Ranson UA-cam recommendation! :D
My dude. Keep doing what your doing because a game like this absolutely has an audience. A huge audience. You tap into that and you are going to crush in a market that is feeling really underappreciated and frought with start/stop/abandoned projects. You'll make money hand over fist.

Pretty sweet, dude. I've been working on a 2D game for the past 2 years and have hit the burnout hard. Feature creep turned into a full-blown game direction change and it's kind of getting out of hand. I wish you luck and hope you finish!

@@MichaelKocha If by "trimming the fat", you mean putting it on indefinite hold and starting a new game so I can actually put the time into designing it first and deciding exactly what will go into it, then yes... I'm already a week into that, lol.

Thanks for sharing, this is very interesting. Currently my game design philosophy is too many games think about ways to limit players these days instead of exploring or expanding on unexpected mechanics. I'm glad to hear you got rid of the 4 slot mechanic, a great example of a mechanic I understood as necessary for NES games, but have no desire for in a modern game.
I think you were blessed by the algorithm, it looks like a lot of the comments were pretty recent. Either way, glad I stumbled onto this! Looking forward to watching your process.

Man, your game is looking really good!! The mix of cubes and soft environment gave a nice feel to it, and it really makes me curious about how the game goes on. Your game seems like the Zelda Breath of the Wild environment, but with a Minecraft touch to it, which is veeeery nice! I hope you can add all the stuff you want to the game, dude, and please tell us the history of the world you're creating and the development of the main character. As it is an open-world game, it's a nice idea to have it. The Guild Wars inspiration is fantastic and this magic system seems very atractive to me!! Nice idea to mix magic and melee combat! I'm in university starting to compose music for games and trying to find ways to work with that. I always get excited when I see some indie developers like you doing nice games like this you're doing!! You inspire me a lot!! Anyway, that's it, hope you get this game done !!

The running out of money thing really resonates with me. I'm doing freelance game development for someone at the moment, which pays the bills while I'm working on my own passion projects. Still living with parents and barely affording to keep up with car insurance and other small costs. There's really not a lot of money in game development when you're starting out, and it's only really once you've released a few small games that make some passive income that you can move on to the bigger games.
I feel like you have to have money to make money in a lot of situations. It's very helpful to have a day job of some sort that you can rely on while you release your first few games. I don't have that luxury as a stay at home dad. I have to find ways to make money to support the game in my spare time. Others would see a day job as a gamedev curse though. Lol I wish you all the luck in the world!
