  • Finally figured out how to upload 5.1 audio from a DVD! Here's a segment from a Panasonic instore demo DVD showing off this incredible new technology. 5.1 audio on this video will work with most streaming devices and TV apps. Haven't gotten it to output properly from my computer. In the 2-channel tracks, the surrounds are moved to the front and subwoofer is just thrown out.

I remember upgrading from Pro-Logic to DD 5.1 in 1997. It was such a quantum leap forward.

What were the first movies you watched? I got mine in 1998 with my first DVD player (a Pioneer LD combo player), I wasn’t going to listen to 5.1 tracks mixed down to 2-channel. First movie I watched was Goldeneye on laserdisc, because it was already the first AC-3 disc I bought previously.

@@TheMediaHoarder True Lies, GoldenEye, Aliens, and Twister all on laserdisc. I had a Pioneer Elite LD player and later bought a Toshiba DVD player in 1999.

That sounds sweet. How did you get the 5.1 track?

I rip the DVD onto the computer using DVD Decrypter as I always do. I then upscale with VirtualDub (needed to get the proper frame rate on UA-cam as it won’t do it in 480) and make sure to have it preserve the original audio. Then I have to compress it with Handbrake as the resulting file is ridiculously large, and also make sure to set the audio on that to auto-passthru rather than re-encoding it. As long as the main audio track is 5.1 it will be encoded here that way. Any alternate tracks aren’t included, and using these settings I noticed it doesn’t encode any Dolby formats on 2-channel Dolby Digital tracks. When it does, it results in both a 5.1 Dolby Digital Plus track and another 5.1 standard Dolby Digital track, plus 2 2-channel tracks in more compressed formats.
