    Marvin was the first to make the National Anthem his own. Whitney listened to Marvin's rendition before she made her iconic version. There is not one other version of the anthem where the audience broke out into clapping along with the song. Marvin has been imitated after this but never duplicated.

    No, it was not added. It was the actual soundtrack performed by Marvin live and they (country/government) temporarily stopped rearrangements of the national anthem because this one was so legendary, out of spite! Our people are so creative!!!!!

    I remember watching this in 1983. Me, my brothers and my Dad were stunned. To this day, that is the most beautiful, soulful, original version of the national anthem performed at a sporting event.

    This was and is the greatest rendition of the national anthem ever. Marvin brought it to another level never seen before or after this performance. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

    Oh, they were so mad.....they were SO MAD!! It was a media hailstorm. He had an accompanying track. He sang "thy" instead of "that". He wore mirrored aviator shades indoors. But me - I adored it. I watched it with my Mama, and she just laughed and said "that's Marvin Gaye, baby". On the flipside of that, this was one of his last televised performances, and when he passed - this performance was referenced often. Over time, critics looked at it with new eyes, acknowledging the legendary brilliance of one of Marvin Gaye's final gifts to us. @SopranoSistah - my musical cousin....I shoulda KNOWN this was you. Amazing request!!!!

      Girl, first just let the profressional writer ✍🏾 side of me tell you that you can WRITE the blue out of the sky, Mrs. Taylor. SO correct on all all points. It was beyond a moment, it was Marvin’s mini movement, whether intentional or not. It don’t get no more “American” than that. Well remembered, Cornelia.⏰💯☑️👏🏾👏🏾💃🏾🎼🎶🎵…and thank you.

      This caused a major issue cause it was LIVE and he arranged and composed it. When the people started clapping my parents and my uncle bussed out laughing and yelling yes sir!!! It's a part of his cd collection. The best NA performed imo

    Gotta put this in context......Singing the National Anthem THIS WAY was def. a risky move. Marvin took a patriotic song that for years meant something that was totally different for "US"(Black folks did not have a lot to patriotic about, especially in the Reagan era) and transformed it into something soulful, beautiful that could reach everyone. Some Right Wing and traditional critics thought Marvin's vision of the Anthem was sacrilegious. That's what makes this so heartfelt....and cool....and defiant.

    One of the best renditions I have every heard. I think Ray Charles was the first to update one of our anthems with Oh Beautiful. But Marvin did that! It was soulful and still showed respect.

      Yes, Ray Charles version of the other anthem “America the Beautifull” is super classic as well. He never even needed to do the official national anthem after that one because his rendition was so ICONIC!🤗

    Yes I remember watching this stunning performance by marvin gaye in early 1983 on cbs. Marvin was fresh on the heels of his Comeback with his massive number one hit sexual healing.
    The ist time I heard anyone change the star spangled banner and make it into an upbeat classic.

    Thanks, Sir. ☑️ This is the 100% original HISTORIC performance…drumbeat and all. Arranged by Marvin himself. Mr. Gaye was always doing things his beautifully smooth and avant-garde and still highly respectful way. It doesn’t get any more “American” than that. Many people also love Whitney Houston’s amazing version from 8 years later at the 1991 Super Bowl. Yet THIS ONE is my personal favorite performance of the national anthem of all time. Seems like only yesterday, not long ago at all. 🌹🌹🌹🌹💃🏾🎼🎶🎵 God rest his soul.

    "Did this sort of thing" way back when? What?? Sing the national anthem? Allstar games? JJ, you sound 🤪 right now. Lol!
    Marvin gaye died in 1984. And they have being singing national anthems since we had a national anthem and the very first nba allstar hand was in 1951! And jj we had tv and telephones in the 80s too. 😆
    This abs the whitney houston version are always in debates as to which is the best. I saw this live. I was like 10 i think. The beat was not normal therefore not an 80s thing. He was the first to do this. He composed the music just for this. It was innovative for the time. After this people started to take ownership of how they perform this song.

      @JustJammin my guy. I'm trying confused by all your statements. Halftime shows started in the 60s this is the 80s!!! So when you say that "things like this" what does that mean? You sound as if you think life just started in the 90s or when you were born. Lol! What exactly does things like this mean? Singers singing the national anthem? Basketball allstar games? What?? Because none of it would make sense considering how long basketball had been around, how long the national anthem has been around, how long professional singers have been around... so yea, I'm surprised that you find this so unusual, and it is really kinda mind blowing and funny at the same time. Singing the national athem at sporting events started with baseball in the late 1800s!

    • @JustJammin
      @JustJammin  Рік тому

      @@Xfactor444-x4n I know that it's been around for football but I never knew it dated that far back for basketball too.

      @JustJammin ok, is just out was the 80s. Lol! Not the 50s, 40s or 20s. Etc. The 80s, there was rap, cable, pager, car phones, video games and halftime shows etc. People use to actually look forward to who might sing the national athem in hopes of getting a aretha franklin, marvin gaye, Patti Labelle or Gladys knight etc. The who's who have all sung the anthem for a major even at least once in their lifetime. It's cool, it's just funny to me because it seems like you think the 80s was like horse and buggies! Lol.

    This was Marvin's iconic version of the National Anthem for the NBA All Star game here in L.A. Can't say I care for it. I thought he used the beat of "Sexual Healing" in the background. I don't hear it here. Maybe somebody can tell me.

    • @SopranoSistah
      @SopranoSistah Рік тому +1

      That was definitely not the “sexual healing” beat. It was just a straight drum beat not related to that other song at all. I found this performance very soulful and highly respectful in that special Marvin Gaye way. And certainly the crowd responded beautifully with their clapping with the song. Respecting yours and all opinions, though.👍🏾🙂
