Robert Fuchs, an Austrian contemporary composer of Brahms, who was his teacher and mentor, among the many noteworthy compositions, two titles dedicated to the double bass stand out. The three pieces op.96 and the Sonata in Bb major op.97. Not many double bass players know his music and it's a shame because these two works are very well written for the instrument as well as offering a truly remarkable style, compositionally interesting and of great aesthetic taste. It is clear, as in all the music he wrote, the strong influence of Brahms, who always had great esteem for Fuchs and said: "Fuchs is a splendid musician, everything is so beautiful, invented with charm and ability". And we know that Brahms was not given to easy compliments.
The three pieces are deliberately written in a low register, usual for the double bass, the challenge is to make the instrument sing even on the fourth string. In addition to the undeniable charm they exude, these pieces are also an excellent exercise for developing the sound in the lower registers. The first movement is a free interpretation from Mozart.
Robert Fuchs voluntarily renounced fame to live a peaceful life in Vienna, he had illustrious students including G.Mahler, J.Siblius and H.Wolf.

Robert Fuchs, compositore austriaco contemporaneo di J.Brahms, che fu suo maestro e mentore , tra le molte composizioni degne di nota, spiccano due titoli dedicati al contrabbasso. I tre pezzi op.96 e la Sonata in Sib maggiore op.97. Non molti contrabbassisti conoscono la sua musica ed è un peccato perchè questi due lavori sono molto ben scritti per lo strumento oltre a offrire uno stile veramente notevole, compositivamente interessante e di grande gusto estetico. E' chiara, come in tutta la musica da lui scritta, la forte influenza di Brahms, il quale ebbe sempre una grande stima di Fuchs ed ebbe a dire: "Fuchs è uno splendido musicista, ogni cosa è così bella, inventata con fascino e abilità". E sappiamo che Brahms non era incline a facili complimenti.
I tre pezzi sono volutamente scritto in un registro basso, usuale del contrabbasso, la sfida è di far cantare lo strumento perfino sulla quarta corda. Oltre al fascino indicutibile che emanano, questi pezzi sono anche un ottimo esercizio per sviluppare il suono nei registri più gravi. Il primo tempo è una libera interpretazione da Mozart.
Robert Fuchs rinunciò volontariamente alla notorietà per vivere una vita serena a Vienna, ebbe allievi illustri tra i quali anche G.Mahler, J.Siblius e H.Wolf.
