I have been wondering for 12 years what instrument makes the sound of the hichiriki. I have an old textbook about Japanese music and instruments through history but it didn't mention the hichiriki in the gagaku section where I would've expect to have found it based on the type of music I've heard it in. I am so glad to have found this video! As a classical Western flutist I very much hope that I get to play some of these instruments someday :)
I think that shoo is a bass chord that consists of 2 notes or more. Because of this, it is rather trance music. Hichiriki, Seishounagon (a super famous classical novelist) has been introduced on another UA-cam post, saying "Sorry for listening nearby." Anyway, the style played with almost twin-reads(also double "reed"XD) of hichiriki and ryuteki is interesting. at japan,“Ohayashi” team plays 3 or 4 songs with ryuuteki and Drums on the summer festival's portable shrine (mikoshi). ryuuteki player is a sixth grader girl at every town, every year. Because it's trance music, 95% of the Japanese do not know the song name even if repeated many times lol

The original is the Armenian tsiranapogh, which is more commonly known by its Turkish name: "düdük". When I came across the Japanese hichiriki, I instantly knew there was no way its similarity to the Armenian instrument was a coincidence; apparently I was correct. Would like to encourage further videos to double-check the given etymologies of these beautiful woodwinds.
Indeed. Supposedly Hichiriki(篳篥) is more of a East Asian instrument since it's also recorded being used in both ancient China and Korea, all the way back to Sui dynasty (~600C.E) and maybe it was adapted and slightly altered when introduced to Japan

In the 1990s, I was so fortunate to perform in the very first Gagaku ensemble at a university in the USA, which was in the ethnomusicology department at UCLA: the woodwind I played was the hichiriki-I also played a Gagaku string instrument, the koto. (These very same costumes were also worn during the UCLA Gagaku ensemble’s performances. 🤔)

Any information on where to get one?
