Napier is worth visiting too...a smaller town not too far away from Gisborne. Lots of art deco buildings with a retro feel. Also the small town of Cambridge (in the Waikato) is lovely. It's probably the closest NZ comes to having a small english village...a classic clocktower, loads of antique shops and tea shops. Just my thoughts. 😊
Hi Curls, followed you for years. In fact the first NZ territory to see the rising of the Sun is the amazing Chatham Islands. Definitely recommend it! Would be right up your alley. Fantastic hosts by the way to. Cheers & Best Tony
Actually, Gisborne has claimed to be the first city (not just a place) on Earth to see the sunrise each day. However, this is only true during New Zealand's summer months, due to Samoa and Tokelau's dateline shift in December 2011.
+wait I've been lied to I'm whole life then lol..as a gisborne native we even have a sign saying we are the first 😂, We can share the first rising then 🤫😂
Morning morning Curtis. Welcome to my hometown,.this part of the country is probably thee most friendliest in New Zealand or maybe the north island,. The east coat your going to love so much it's incredibly stunning and the locals are beautiful souls.. Ruatoria is the only place I've never stayed around long cause been the white boy you feel not to Welcome even though I'm born and raised around this whole area..but they arnt rude. You definitely came to gisborne when they finally have a summer I still visit my mum and family there, The last few years they had so much rain so I'm loving the summer of 2024 so far. The pies do be amazing. Have an amazing rest of your week.
Yay, you made it to my town! We do get some of the best summer weather in the country here. I'm glad you tried a pie from Morells Bakery, they're very good. You missed a bakery that would've been quite good, it was very close to the place where you had the mediocre pie.
Hi Curls I went to Gisborne Girls High. My brother lives over that bridge. You missed Kaiti hill where you can see the whole of Gisborne City from that lookout. Damn! I miss Gisborne. So glad you went there Curls 👍
I have lived in NZ all my life and haven't yet been to Gisborne; you've been here a few years I believe and I'm sure you been to more places than what I have, so I'm seeing NZ and all those yummy pies through your eyes
Awesome you came here 😎 so cool you went to bakery 22 nice. Next time you gotta stop in at hirepool and okitu beach is beautiful and also kaiti hill the view is amazing
Actually it is the Chatham Islands (Rekohu) that are first, specifically Pitt Island. Also because of the angle of the sunrise in summer, NE to SW, the whole east coast of NZ, North and South Islands get the sunrise at the same time. Dunedin sees the sunrise on 1st January at exactly the same time as Gisborne. The highest point along that line is the very first on mainland Aotearoa. That happens to be Mt Tapueanuku in the Kaikoura mountains in the South Island. That was recognised about 20-30 years ago actually by a Gisborne businessman.
This man really loves and feels our culture ❤️ I can especially tell by the way he always speaks and reads Te reo Maori, and soo well!! .. his level of respect is beautiful. I appreciate you my friend 🙏🏼 much love and god bless you 💯
glad you seemed to have a good time bro, my hometown, can be a bit rugged around the edges but we take alot for granted. nice to see someone elses perspective, sun hits different on the east coast
Love your videos....my home town...would have been cool to meet ya...bakery 22 mean pies. That saturday was gnarly, im shocked you walked it. Those cliffs...is a place called Te Kuri a Paoa...glad you went to Morrells...best food..
@@vindogg87 Certainly learning place names correctly has value, & Te Reo has value from a cultural perspective, but most Kiwis are not Maori and have their own rich cultural heritage with corresponding language.
@@vindogg87 Not sure what you are talking about, the English culture goes bask around 1500+ years, Maori 700, Chinese living in NZ 5000+ years to name a few. Western culture is a culture, you are just used to seeing it, thus don't identify it as a culture..
A bit off beam, Curls. You need to go somewhat northeast to East Cape or Mt Hikurangi to see the first sun of each day in Aotearoa mainland. Actually, to be really correct you need to go WAAAY north-east to Millenium /Caroline Island (which is part of the country) to see the first sun in the world. That's a few thousand km from Gisborne!!! 🙂🙂
The international timeline is the 180th meridian. New Zealand isn’t the first country to see the sunrise. I believe the island of Tuvalu at 179 degrees 5.1 East meridian should have that status.
There is a island just outside of N.Z. that gets the sun 1st. I think it is called Chatham Island. But in N.Z. Mt Hikurangi is the 1st part of N.Z. that sees the sun first. I was in Gisbourne in April 24' it looked like, the houses never saw a lick of paint since the 1970's. I wasn't liking the rainbow crossing. I felt violated. It should have been outlawed. The red crossing, if it is raised, cars by law have to stop. If it is flat, it will only be a coutesy for them to stop. Mate, that was the 3rd city i been to, that you showed up to in 18 months that i was there.
Sorry Curls but Gisborne is no longer the first place to see the sun, that would be Kiribati which extended the line east in 1995 to keep the same time throughout the country, which previously fell on both sides of the international date line. But it is still the first city to see the new day sun. That bird sounded like a bellbird, or korimako, also called a makomako in some areas.
Kia Ora Curls. How are you finding the cost of living nowadays in NZ ? Things like Fuel, Electricity & Food. We've had enough & are moving to Australia in 3 weeks. Good luck bro. Chur.
Red crossings are courtesy crossings. Cars don't have to stop like they do for zebra crossings so it's a bit bold to just bowl out onto one. We have them in Napier as well.
While it's true that New Zealand is not the first country to see the rising sun, Gisborne's claim to fame has always been that it is the first city in the world to see the sun each day.
Only in the summer months, between Nov - Jan and it's actually the Chatham islands. NZ's claim to fame is that it is 1st country to see the NEW YEARS DAY. Officially Kiribati Islands is internationally recognized as the 1st country in the world to see the new day! ( got to let them have it, they not known for anything else) 2nd is Russia Because of the difference in the latitudes, different countries see the sunrise first depending on the time of the year. The countries where the sun rises first in the world are: Kiribati (Kiritimati) - September 27 to November 13 / January 31 to May 15 (153 days) Russia (Kamchatka area) - May 16 to September 26 (134 days) New Zealand (Chatham Island) - November 14 to January 30 (78 days)
The first place to see the sun on earth before New Zealand is Tonga in the furthest eastern part of Nukualofa. Also Samoa will see if before them too!! do some research and you will see. The Islands get written off since its not as big as NZ in terms of the avg persons geographical knowledge.

Rekohu / Wharekauri / Chatham Islands for the first sun in NZ. I think one of the Pacific Islands (Kiribati?) is the first to see the new day.
Go north of gisborne till you get to Tokomaru Bay where the OG paua pies are from. Nau mai ki te Tairawhiti te uranga mai o te Ra😋
Home sweet home Gisborne
Curls if you re still in Gisborne and want to try a unique snack, go to a fish and chip shop and order chips with 'all sauces'.
I live in gisborne. Always hot in summer! 35deg alot

If you lie down and keep quite still the birds will come down closer to check you out.
how many pies do you have a day :)
Great video thanks however, the islands of Kiribati is the first place in the world to see the sun
I believe that bird was a thrush. Not native, but makes amazing sounds. 🐦 (Please correct me if I'm wrong1)
Red or Black raised crossings are curtesy crossings
Isn't it easter island that first to see the sun rise
Do you prefer New Zealand over Spain? And why? Thank you all

Samoa used to be the last place to see the sun until they changed the dateline.
Pfft Samoa just changed the time zone and is only relevant in winter.
Mt hikurangi sees the sun first
