A well Traveled Kiwi here. Iive spent a number of years in the US with work between Washington and Virginia. Its refreshing to watch your videos that agree why I look forward to just coming home. I don't want you to think that's a disrespectful judgement of the US in general, more a realisation of reason. I love the US, I Love the people (if we don't talk politics which is hard given my job!) I love the diversity of culture on offer at street level, but if I'm honest Im glad you chose to raise a family here. Good luck to you all.
Hey Mate. Welcome to this remote country. So pleased to see that you enjoy our society and are able to fit into it A lot of Americans don’t. Have fun and good luck!!
Hi Alex! I met you in SAN airport yesterday after what was probably a 20-hour journey from NZ for you and your wife and daughter. As I mentioned when we met, I love your NZ travel videos. So helpful for us as we are planning a four week trip in February. I really enjoyed this one as it was so refreshing to hear about the cultural differences between the US and NZ. It’s great that you’re able to live in NZ, slow down, and enjoy life in such a beautiful country and be a part of such a welcoming community. Cheers
Another one is keeping up with the Jones's and consumerism, Kiwis don't need to have the latest car or phone or clothes etc, you would be surprised how many people rocking gumboots or jandals are millionaires here.
Yep, they've fallen for the devil's schemes big time. Blind guides have sold their children's future in one generation. Kiwi value$? Cri$i$? What cri$i$? I just got back from a month in NZ and I was sooo sad to leave there. It was incredible. I will be back soon! Was lucky to also see the aurora whilst at Abel Tasman ❤
Hey Vegan did you go to Beached Whale while near Abel Tasman? my cousin owns that restaurant lol 🙂 (I was last down near abel tasman maybe in 2020-2021 ish)
I have lived in the same place for 23 years and have never locked my door, the cars I have owned 4 cars in that time I have never locked my cars, I live in a small farming community (Taihape pop 1,800)
It's lovely to hear how other people from other countries feel about NZ, a lot of which we NZers generally take for granted because it's what we grew up with and are used to. I travel a lot, but there is nowhere in the world to compare with NZ and all the positive features that are mentioned about living here. Many thanks for making these videos and telling others about what makes our country great. ❤❤
Your references to having baby in NZ and having everything covered touches on NZ's universal healthcare system. One thing you often hear Kiwis grumble about is the public health system . However having experienced a major medical crisis in NZ - a heart attack - the health system was all over me superfast. A heart attack at 5pm - by 8pm I had two stents installed. The cost - zero - the only money spent was the parking fees paid by my wife when she visited me. I would have had to pay NZD80 for a 40 minute ambulance ride but as an annual member of St John Ambulance it was free. If you have a life threatening event - the system is great - if you have something non-urgent - get in the queue. I compare this with stories I hear from America about the high cost of medical insurance, and those who can't afford it being one medical crisis away from abject poverty. I have visited the USA on business over the eyars many times and always had the feeling the people to the Right there - thought our social welfare system was akin to communisim. ( The USA spends twice as much as New Zealand per person on healthcare each year - so where the hell is he money going?). Looking after oneanother isn't a political ideology - it's about having respect and caring about your fellow human beings imo. I'm pleased you are enjoying your life here Alexander - go well!
As a Kiwi having travelled to USA and UK in my youth, and worked there, I can relate to your points Alex. I'm grateful to live in New Zealand and agree with your outlook. When I was a child no-one locked their doors, even at night, that was back in the 60s and in a small town, Napier. So I have seen changes of course, but I still think NZ is a great place to live and raise a family. Thank you for your content, which I enjoy!
My father in law still leaves his house and garage full of machinery with every window and door wide open in full view from the main street, goes away for the day and has never been burgled. No one would believe nobody was home. Without doubt, if he left just one window out the back of the house open half an inch he would be burgled almost immediately.
I have never locked my door. Seriously, if someone really wants my stuff, they can have it! It’s worth nothing. To be honest it’s rubbish. What’s far more important is the land, the home, the warmth. How do you steal that? And you are right! This is such a lovely place to hear kids playing out on the street at twilight which is one of my most treasured memories. Be kind. Px
@Pauline-s7t Unfortunately, it can be and has being stolen in the temporal world and far more. Nothing new. Fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
I grew up in Napier in the 50s and early 60's so the population was around 45,000 people. Back then, a city was around 50,000+. It's definitely a city now. @@MovieHeretic
It's nice to see that there are still places where kindness and other human values are the norm. I wish here in Spain kindness was the norm specially nowadays. Is there any cultural thing you miss from the USA? I mean positive things. Thanks for you videos!😊
I lived in Brisbane for 30 years... I have four Australian children as a result. But I also was a child living in Brisbane and the differences I saw between NZ and OZ are also significant. I now raise my youngest two in Dunedin, and would not have it any other way. Much more laid back, although it is a place that is probably set back in time some, the community spirit, the acceptance of diversity, and the safety is so much better than our time in Brisbane. Politically, NZ is better than Australia as well in the laid back attitudes. My first two children (now grown) did the majority of their schooling in Australia... and one still lives in Australia with his children/family... (oh how I wish he would come here) I dont' think I could ever live in Australia again..even though kiwis believe the grass is greener there, it really isn't.
I should add as well...Auckland is a whole other entity in NZ...and I lived there and was born there, and I finally left there as well (and my dreams of home as a child living in Brisbane) 5 years ago as it isn't as safe, as community orientated, and definitely not affordable as the rest of NZ.
Australia is similar to the US with the ALP being like the Democrats and LNP the Republicans. Anthony Albanese is Kamala and Dutton is Trump. I think the New Zealand Labour party is very similar to the Australian Greens and you don't have anything quite like the ALP or Democats.
@thrusta100 No he isn't!!! Anthony Albanese is Kamala. Jacinda is Adam Bandt or Richard Di Natale. The New Zealand Labour Party is a lot more progressive than the ALP.
Appreciate your positivity about NZ, and I agree with your assertions, but I do think this is a little idealistic. We do of course have road rage, unfriendly people, untrustworthy people, bad things do happen here. I understand you are generalising and we are super lucky for all the reasons you say, but we aren’t a Utopia, people coming to NZ still need to be safe and take precautions like you do anywhere.
Totally agree, statistically though, things like that are much more rare here and there seems to be a cultural push to be better people and be kind, whereas that feels lacking in the states nowadays
Congrats on your baby .I was blessed to be born on NZ for me it is the people you would be hard pressed to find anyone who will not go out of there way to help you if needed
For outsiders when you come to NZ remember one thing - don't be a dick. Leave your ego on the plane. Seems like "being a dick" is a thing that is tolerated, perhaps accepted, in the US.
Ive had pretty bad interaction with amercians as a whole this guy has changed my perspective and I need to change my thoughts/and attitude towards americans this dude is all good
All the same reasons why I came back from Australia after living there for 38yrs in Perth, I was born in Wellington parents took us to Aus when we were young, Rotorua is my new home now and we couldn't be happier, NZ...there really is no comparison for us and how beautiful it is here, people included, Mauri ora.
@ Being priced out of the housing market after Covid because of greedy selfish people for one. Neighbours that wouldn’t give you the time of day, I lived there for 38yrs compared to your decade so I’ve witnessed more changes in the rat race resource driven behaviour and especially in regards to how the aboriginal people are treated, still like shit second class citizens.
2:49 - Hilariously, you miss-read the subject title: It is "LIFE-WORK" balance! Not "WORK-LIFE" balance. Your American is showing. Life come first. Work comes second. Please remember that!
Hey Alex - it’s great to have you and your whanau be part of our team of 5 million. Your insights were really interesting and I’m glad you guys feel welcome - because you are. I wonder what your thoughts are on the relationship between the NZ government and Maori compared to the US government and the native Americans?
We really enjoyed your video. My wife and I are thinking about retiring to New Zealand as we are fed up with the state of politics in the US. Do you have any suggestions on which cities we should focus on exploring to retire in when we make a trip to New Zealand hopefully at the end of Jan 2025? Thanks. Your daughter is beautiful.

One thing that reminds me that nz is a civilized country , is that for the 2 hours of the morning strangers say good morning, if you're out walking your dog or riding abike or something.
As an immigrant to NZ, living most of my life in Auckland (the most populous city) the values you discuss are largely prevalent there too. “Don’t be a dick” is a pretty standard driving factor of behaviour.
You're right about the Don't be a Dick, it's what we say to Dickheads about the go off the deep end as we also say And of course, our biggest Sports team,ABs,has a, NO DICKHEAD policy in the ABs team, And welcome to NZ,💯👍
My country isn't Utopia, but it is pretty damn awesome. We just don't buy in to the aggro and bullshit. We do have our issues, but at heart we actually care about other people. If only that were universal.
Well researched and accurate summation around our work entitlements , lifestyles and attitudes to life generally Alex…including the political aspects of life. While some aspects have changed since my childhood experiences, it seems that’s the way of the world.
As a Kiwi who moved to Canada, I struggled a lot with employers and jobs, because of the laid back attitude I had been raised with. I was not used to the rush rush attitude. "You havent finished yet? You are so slow? Why are you not done yet?" I was always getting from my employers. This exacerbated my health and eventually I ended up having to stop working. Kiwis be warned,. If you move to Canada and probably the USA as well - be prepared to be a remote worker or self employed so that you are not being constantly attacked by your employer. PS I really hated working for the Corporate environment as well. They were the worst. They hate the work life balance. You are there to work for them. not to pander to your families.
Working for British companies one had to be thick-skinned. Even after many years of completing exactly the same operational tasking and more without error, I was constantly falsely chided for being slow and backward. Typically, hypocritical, contradictory, risible and infantile attitudes and even worse multiple highly discriminatory and illegal, extreme intergenerational practices that others have picked up on, BOO!
"Slow down! Go live Antarctica." Yeah right. All manner of dirty tricks, risible falsehoods, strange doctrines, rorting, and defrauding by self-basement. Even when completing exactly the same tasking or more to the same or higher standard, constantly chided for being slow or backward. Colleagues having to tell why they are better than you when they have a lower grade in an exam solely based upon their or their parents nationality.
I think one of the biggest differences between NZ and the US is the attitude towards freedom. The US seems obsessed with 'the land of the free', but they want 'freedom to' as in freedom to own a gun. freedom to say what they want, regardless of who it may offend, whereas in NZ it's more of a 'freedom from', as in freedom from excessive government, freedom from imposed religious beliefs, freedom from restrictions.
Not to mention anyone and everyone is free to walk into any hospital and receive Care regardless how bad they are. And that most cases the bill is covered by our taxes. Except the Ambulance ride, you have to pay for that unless it's a work incident
@MyNic28 America has too many rude people and plus in new zealand rent is cheaper food is cheaper doctors are cheaper the hourly rate at a job is waaay more.
As a born and bred New Zealander in my mid 60s that closely follows the US political climate it's alway interesting when meeting Americans traveling or have moved here on a more permanent basis. My general overview is that the majority are more than happy to avoid ANY political discourse about what's goin' on back home. I have actually observed some of them mentally throwing up firewalls in an attempt to NOT have that conversation at all so, l don't push it 😂 Let and let live ✌️ I use tosubscribe to your channel so l'm going to have to catch up on progress and re sub. By the way congrats about being parents now. Bubby is cute.
A huge difference between the two countries is the relationship with its indigenous ppl. Māori culture is deeply rooted in the fabric of Aotearoa, as per Te Tiriti O Waitangi. This also blends into mainstream systems such as the health sector, which incorporates Te Whare Tapa Wha model by Sir Mason Durie. For e.g. Māori prioritise Wairua, Whānau and Whenua as important elements of health and healing, which are often overlooked in most health care systems. However, the current NZ coalition govt has been the most devisive to date by trying to undermine Māori as treaty partners so Māori intend to hikoi (peaceful protest) and stand in solidarity with our people at Parliament tomorrow 19th Nov, and remind them of the treaty... Toitū Te Tiriti!!!✊🏽🖤🤍❤️
Also, Te Tiriti o Waitangi protects our whenua, taiao, foreshores and seabeds from being ransacked by foreign capitalists; and right now, the coalition govt are trying to sell us out to the highest bidder so that they can pay off the debts they caused in the first place!!🙄 I imagine an Aotearoa without Te Tiriti looking somewhat like a new America - overpopulated, overworked and raided of all its natural resources and beautiful landscapes. Not to mention, crime rates will only escalate. Ew!
As a youth of the late 70's-80's we did have have late night Friday shopping but nothing was open on the weekends then not even saturday mornings at all ,i don't believe it was even allowed back then to trade on a sat or sun ,then they changed it & stopped the friday nights .Here in the south isl as youth we would all get dressed up & go to town on Friday nights to the shopping centre it was a big deal that's how we meet girls .
No my friend. I live in the Capital City and I know all my neighbours. We get together often in the summer for bbq and pot luck dinners. NZ is not concerned with your ethnicity, religion or other personal shit. His description was spot on.
And the business has to hold your job for you while you are on parental leave... that is awesome - that parents are not being punished for having babies
Wow Alex, as an American citizen who has lived in multiple states and various cities /towns, I am shocked you feel your LA experience would be the same across the USA. You should update the video to instruct the viewers to replace every USA reference with Los Angeles. As there is NO comparison.
Hey Jenean - totally agree that LA is not really representative of the whole USA, that being said it does have oversized impact and relevance culturally in the USA. Small towns definitely have better vibes than any of the big cities (NYC) etc
How problematic is the isolation? Obviously you go back once a yr, but Europe is double the distance again. Also that Californian weather must have been hard to leave or are you becoming more of a 4 seasons guy - or 3.5 in the case of Wairarapa summers
What would you call it when a state abrogates your legal, financial, and human rights and persecutes you and your children, then repeatedly follows you to third countries over twenty five years where you are peacefully and legally supporting your children and trying to build a new life, to continue to illegally persecute you in unconscionably inhumane and risibly dehumanising circumstances?
Yes I feel the same way the reasons Nzers don't talk about politics is because they don't care is he asking why people are leaving in higher numbers than ever before.

You're in the middle of no where, of course the shops close at 5pm lmfao. Duhhh. We actually work longer than people in the USA if you look at the stats, we just get more annual leave and sick leave
This video was so nice to watch, especially since I'm thinking about moving to New Zealand. After the way the election went this week. I don't want to live in the USA anymore which is so sad to say, but clearly people in the US and the corrupt government don't give a damn about people, especially women where's New Zealand they do. I want to live in a country that's safe and cares about people and this video definitely confirms all of that. So I think I'm going to pull the trigger and go for it, even if it means leaving the people I love and care about behind. Doesn't mean I don't want to live in the US in the future, but right now I don't have any hope for our country, not with all the people who are causing all the suffering right now. Sorry I'm rambling, thank you so much for sharing this.
There's a reason why we dislike Jacinda who's far left like Kamala Harris and we shifted to the right. We Kiwis know how divisive Jacinda was that's why we will never forget how she ruled like tyrant here in NZ and the fact that we are tired of BS from the MSM. We're also tired of the leftist policies here just so you know! TBH with you liberals are the ones who destroyed and divided our country! We don't want Californian libertards here

Hi from Australia. Glad you chose a life instead of an occupation as the basis of your existence. The best things to say about a country like New Zealand is all sides of politics and society are cognizant of the true meaning of living - family, enjoyment, enlightenment (listening to and understanding of, the world around you) and yes work but, all equal.

I gave birth in emergency room twice, as hospital full , nearly killed my first son he now disability from oxygen deprivation from bad maternity care, my midwive shortage I never my midwive one week b4 birth, glad it went well for you but being free ain't enough to go around it's very much luck of the draw.
Have you ever watched that movie, the beach? I live on waiheke Island, the worst thing I ever did was tell others about where I live. They came, they loved, they stayed and they bought all they knew with them, even though they wanted my peace and stunning beaches and views and wildflower roads they bought their need for regular ferries and side walks and concrete and faster pace and I understand now, the worst thing I ever did was leave this island and tell others of it. The same will happen to New zealand. People will swarm here, its happening already, and need changes and space and it should, ín my opinion be kept a beautiful secret, because as much as I'd like to share, we consume. That sounds depressing doesn't it haha, but I'm old I've watched us do it
Their are multiple parties but realistically only two ever stand a chance of getting in really unless the other parties get more seats in parliament or we end up with the same problem we are having now 3 parties leading 1 country

@@mikedanbury2098 That's word for word exactly what everybody said about Hitler. Many Germans were at that time very poor and he gave them a perspective. So I understand they saw him as their hero. And you always need a scapegoat (to avoid talking about the real problems), in Hitler's case the Jews. The USA is the richest country in the world (with the highest debts, very fragile base) and still wants to Make America Great Again. Why? When is it enough? The scapegoats are now the not white immigrants (deportation, racism; does it sound familiar?) and cheap outlandish production capacity (tariffs). That's highly offensive for the most part of the world. It's not Trump, it's the American people.
Since the introduction of TikTok we've watched footage of Americans demonstrating that "Karen" mentality. It's entertaining, with a huge sense of entitlement. But there's such a dark side of that entitlement. I feel it's starting to permeate within our communities, especially in the bigger cities. But I hope and pray we never get to the state of our children having to learn about gun safety. That just breaks my heart. Our children should never ever have to feel unsafe at school 😢

Hey Napier is a city and not a small town.

Albo is Aussie version of Ardern! Absolute shocker , worst PM ever...🤦♂️🤮👎
@@thrusta100 which one are you calling the worst PM ever???

Corporate culture in North America can be really tough
Kiwi's oppose themselves.
This is very insightful
The sense of community is just a countryside/smaller town thing. I live in Auckland and don't know my neighbours.

Ew!
Thank you for sharing this insightful information 👍🏽

This video was so nice to watch, especially since I'm thinking about moving to New Zealand. After the way the election went this week.
