What awesome memories. I saw the Eels play so many times in the 80’s and loved every minute of watching one of the best teams to play the game. Peter Stirling was one of the best - what a player and a man of the people.
As Moritmer said, he's the most complete half back he ever played against, maybe the most complete half back ever. Great bloke off the field as well. True legend.
I think even Jason Taylor could have been a super star , back in those days. Defence back then , was less than ordinary. But to be fair - it was a only a part time gig as all the players had 9 - 5 jobs.
Thank you for posting this. I have it on an old VCR tape and accidently taped over part of it, which upset me. It's from his Testimonial following his premature retirement. Again, thank you :)
Sterling could walk into this current Parramatta side and get them to a grand final. I think only Joey Johns is the other halfback who could do that. Sterlo, IMO, was the finest thinker the game has ever seen. And you still see that in his commentary and analysis. Always 3 plays ahead of everyone else. I'd love for him to coach Parra one day.
For me the greatest halfbacks ever to play are 1. Alfie 2. Sterlo 3. Joey. 4. Ricky Stuart 5. Jonathan Thurston. How sterlo wasn’t the 8th immortal is beyond me.
100% correct mate. It's the depletion of the brain's serotonin that in fact results in what people refer to as a "wishing you were dead" comedown. Anyone who thinks any "drug" besides anabolic steroids will help athleticism is sorely mistaken, and has trouble admitting Andrew Johns was a brilliant player either way.
Ha ha yeah Sterling really dominated Mortimer. Both kept each other out of rep sides, both had similar club records, both won man of the match awards playing against each other. As I said not a struck match between them. And I know Joey Johns has achieved some sort of demi god status with certain people but truth be known he never dominated Origin and Alan Langer was just as good.
Ah. Sterling Kenny Cronin Ella Grothe. It doesn't get better than that. They go on about these blokes today. As I've heard before they wouldn't lace the boots of the blokes of the days gone. Was just a better game back then.
If Brett Kenny was great; and he was, how great was Peter Sterling who played inside him at half back. Definitely the greatest half since the great Billy Smith from St George.
Just remember when comparing Johns to Sterlo. When Sterlo played there were 0 interchange and only 2 reserves per game. Sterlo played behind a small pack of forwards. Johns had pAUL Harrigan and Butterworth up front. Johns played when there were 12 interchanges and 4 full replacements allowed per game. Both great players but Sterlo was better in my view. I actually think Steve Mortimer is also better than Johns.
Some of that defense was atrocious , but then again they were only part - time players as they had full time jobs outside of footy back then! I like the Andrew Johns , Ricky Stuart , Allan Langer highlights better!
And not a immortal. Just BS. Now there talking about Thurston yet he won 2 premierships with one of the bench. Lewis won ZERO. There talking about Munster 🤣. Sterling 4 premierships, first player to score 10 out of 10 in rugby league week in a game. Just a amazing player yet no Immortal status. Throw Kenny, Cronin and Price in that too. How is it possible that a team like that has Zero immortals?
Johns never had the assistance of an illegal drug. He was a recreational Drug user which in no way enhances performance. I am not saying what he did was right but it didn't give Johns an advantage in any way! And this is froma Parramatta and Sterlo fan!
Mate I guess the emphasis should be on "assistance" of an illegal drug to enhance his performance. It is well known that users of MDMA go through a crash both mentally and physically generally the day after taking it. The notion of well planned use of a backyard drug that has positive physical effects 3 days after being administered is just ridiculous. I might add any doctor will tell you that MDMA s effect on reaction and reflexes is negative not positive.
Sterlo was the perfect halfback for Parra because he gave good service to a great backline and didn't stuff them up. But does that make him great in his own right? Not IMO. Jack Gibson praised Sterling as his best player because he always liked to have a contrary opinion to give the impression that he saw things that common plebs don't see. Had Phil Blake had the brilliant year he had in '83 a year earlier, he would've been on the '82 Tour carving up that old GB team and been hailed a champion.
Wow Peter accusing a Nights player of staying down, milking a penalty from a high hit. Even still saying that in the replay as you could see the player feeling his mouth for damage then came the blood.?And still repeated it after seeing that. This clown for real? No wonder Ray Warren pulls him up during commentating.Peter is best commentating of the actual play and leave his unfounded thoughts aside. It's not the first time he has made a fool out of his self. ps. I'm not even a Night's supporter

The best 1/2 ive seen in my 50yrs, daylight second, achieved everything many times over...its a disgrace Johns is an immortal and he isnt

Man gotta love Sterlo!!!
I havent seen sterlo play much but i really like his unbiased and professional commentary. he is a champ
@M yes
This might sound outrageous, but I think Sterlo should be considered as a future immortal.

YOU ARE LEGEND,WE LOVE YOU

G.O.A.T Halfback!!!
Go the Parra Eels.
Love the guy. played for my team. Hull fc.
💛💙💛💙 STERLO 💛 STERLO 💙💛💙💛
Probably the best wet weather halfback of all time. Was as good or even better in the wet than on a dry track.
I believe he was a better halfback than Joey Johns. Should be an immortal.
Mortimer was every bit as good as Sterling. Both standouts in an era of great halfbacks.
Steve Mortimer better
@@tonygoodwin2834 Pfft...
@@The_Last_Ninja Pft... Both were great but, Turvey was electrifying. Even Sterlo rated Mortimer as one of the best he's played against.

Peter stirling was the BEST half back beside Peter Mortimer, but this was back before the NRL allowed ridiculous second row feeds
Where is the Sterling Silver dive pass from the scrum that he was renowned for lol. I used to hate that shit soooooooooo much!!
Peter sterling is the greastest half back to ever play rugby league
Ha ha yeah Sterling really dominated Mortimer. Both kept each other out of rep sides, both had similar club records, both won man of the match awards playing against each other.

Wow, Sterlo is a great Queensland player
lol what?
Stereo is the best I'm the world
There's Sterlo, Dally M and Joey. With daylight before anyone else.
If Brett Kenny was great; and he was, how great was Peter Sterling who played inside him at half back. Definitely the greatest half since the great Billy Smith from St George.
Kenny made Sterlo look good.
Edge, Hunt, Glover, Moseley.

You are so spot on mate. All the hype with these guys today is rubbish. Wouldn't lace Sterlings boots.
Some of that defense was atrocious , but then again they were only part - time players as they had full time jobs outside of footy back then! I like the Andrew Johns , Ricky Stuart , Allan Langer highlights better!
At least they could tackle around the bootlaces. Not like the rubbish you see now. You talk rubbish.
And not a immortal.

Do North Queensland want another over 30 year old, I don't think so!
Johns never had the assistance of an illegal drug. He was a recreational Drug user which in no way enhances performance. I am not saying what he did was right but it didn't give Johns an advantage in any way! And this is froma Parramatta and Sterlo fan!
when footy was footy. No offence but it is americanised shit now. I follow WSW henceforth
The music 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Mate, Sterlo and Johns both take a backseat to Alfie Langer.
Allan Langer, best halfback in history.
