The cover defence 😮....penrith players in that clip probably thought they were in an uncatchable position until Grothe arrived. O'Connor too playing for st george only just made the line. Pace in cover defence, no peer
As a qlder growing up I had a former parra player as a coach who showed me the Eels in the 80s...have been a massive fan ever since...Grothe.....best winger ever..daylight 2nd for mine...couldnt hit the corner post in those days either so it was tougher...had to barge through them
Even as a Manly fan I had to marvel at The Guru. He could turn a game on its head with one burst of power and speed, and he had plenty of both before his knees gave out.
He didn't just run him down either. O'Connor intercepted a kick on the full and was at full pace in 2 or 3 steps. Guru was on the left wing, had to stop, turn around, and then set sail after Michael O'Conner who was at full speed, had a 10 m head start, and was on the other side of the field. He went one step too far in the tackle otherwise he would have had O'Connor before the tryline too. I only remember all that because I was a 17 yo at that game, Round 2 1986, the first ever game at Parramatta Stadium. That chase down has stuck vividly in my brain ever since, I'd never seen a human move that fast before in real life and I don't think I have since
Wigan lad here, who never saw Billy Boston play, but I can't believe that the great BB was any better than the Guru. Eric looked about as easy to tackle as a skip full of bowling balls going downhill. We're lucky to have so much video footage of some of the greatest players ever...

Such great footage of Eric Grothe. An exceptional player - a beast of a winger.
It wasn't just the genetic gifts he was given it was his attitude, he ran like he was angry and had something to prove, what a bloody handful.
What a brilliant player. Best winger ever. Hand down
I watch this every night before I go to sleep.
Was a privilege to see him play for Leeds - people still put him in their all time Leeds team, legend.

He was a beast. Had speed. Power & a little swerve at pace. Just a pity he had a few injuries which curtailed him. 1 of the very best though
Eric brotherSnr the best Up PARRA 💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙💛💙
Thanks for uploading. Awesome memories.

Manly fan here too and he was my favourite winger. Sorry Craig Hancock.
Rex Mossop: "Just how fast is Eric Grothe, Jack?"
Jack Gibson: "Always just as fast as he needs to be"
Classic comment!
Best RL winger ever
Amazing player, what power and speed fond memories!
What a legend
Would not like to try and Tackle this guy.
Legend.
Only winger I've ever seen run down Michael O Conner. Truly a great one. His 1st try for NSW in 1981(he scored 2 that game) be his best I reckon.

Wow. Just as I remember him from a lifetime ago. A juggernaut.
one of the all time great wingers who could also tackle and saved numerous tries. Pity that injury cut short his career.
Greatest of all wingers
The best ever ! all hail the guru
Love the one where he throws a dummy and the 2 wests players collide into each other clasping at air..classic !
wat a great player
see how hard he runs
Best . Collage. vid. ever.
The Guru. Legend🏉
different game but grothe was similiar to jonah lomu
Magic
The White Semi Radradra of the 80's!
Has anyone got a link to the eric groth full side line try where he palms off every takle? Cheers.
tell me a better winger than this man
No such thing. The best ever!!
I honestly think his son could have been better but he didn’t have the same drive and love for the sport.

That has to be the best music ever put to a youtube video!
