In this video I go over all the reasons why the yoke in a Model 3 and Y just doesn't make much sense and why I decided to remove it and go back to the round wheel. I also show you what it takes to swap it out.
If you are still interested in a Yoke, the one that I had was a pretty good one from Hansshow. Use the check out code IOWATESLAGUY to save over $100 on the purchase.

I have reached the same conclusion with my own personal experience after 7 months of using the yoke. I like the round steering wheel more after I switched back. The grass isn't always greener on other side.

I’m getting a custom made (red) yoke for my Red Tesla M3. I wanted to watch your video before to do it to see if any major issues were related to installing a yoke, but all the points you mentioned really comes down to personal preference. So, the yoke has gotta go ON for me instead 😁

  • @dennisschlieckau8723

Jim, most of your points while not wrong, are really knit picking from the overall experience. I get that it comes down to personal preference. I’ve had the Yoke in my 3 for 2.5 years. The advantages for me are more than just ease of FSD nag prevention. It’s Ingress and Egress. I’m a Big guy and with the shallower foot wells in the 3 due to the HV pack,
my right thigh would always hit the bottom of the whee getting out as twisted to the left. Even with optimal positioning for “easy entry “. With the yoke, I’m able to gain about 6” of open clearance by rolling it upside down when parked. The other benefit is when the yoke is rolled over I now have a high grab point to aid in exiting. I’m guessing this is less of issue with the Y due to its elevated seating position which helps recreate a normal footwell depth. I will not be switching back because the advantages for me outweigh the disadvantages, which to me are minor inconveniences that amount to less than 1% total driving time.

Very Good points about safety. I had mentioned before that an obvious disadvantage of a yoke and buttons instead of stocks was in busy traffic circles. A greater chance of error when you need to be focusing on everything around the vehicle instead of where the yoke and turn signal buttons are.

NHTSA actually has a guide to the safe way to steer. The recommended is hand over hand. FYI, that was exactly what I was taught in drivers ed 50 years ago. I switched to the yoke 2 years ago and love it. I also installed an additional dashboard and admit now I use that even more than the main screen. I have never really had any issues with the yoke. Parking is easy with either.

I’ve had the same yoke in my M3 for five months and I love it. I don’t have FSD, so I don’t have the same safety concerns. For me, it works great for city driving and as he said, it’s great for Autopilot on long road trips. Nearly zero nags and it’s so comfortable to hang my hands on the bottom of the yoke.

I learnt this from when I had to replace the ignition switch in my Honda Pilot. There were stern warning to disconnect the 12V battery or the airbag in the steering wheel could accidentally deploy and cause serious injury. I guess it the same on a Tesla according to Grok....

The yoke would be dangerous in a spin of the car

  • @MarkStatkus
    @MarkStatkus 4 місяці тому

Yeah I get conflicted with mine at times. I’ve actually found it easier to just migrate my hand more center and spin it in tight spots. But in a traffic higher speed situation that is not as safe and have to play around with hand position and not hitting the stalks accidentally. Looks / feels cool and there are times I actually feel I have more leverage with it. Hand over hand not so much.

A WARNING: I asked Grok: "Should a person disconnect the 12V battery in a Tesla before removing the airbag module?"
    Grok @grok replied:
"Well, it's a bit like asking if you should wear a helmet before jumping out of a plane. Technically, you could do it without the helmet, but it's not the best idea.
In all seriousness, it is recommended to disconnect the 12V battery in a Tesla before removing the airbag module. This is because there is a risk of accidentally triggering the airbag while working on the module, which could lead to injury or damage to the vehicle. It's always better to be safe than sorry, especially when dealing with explosive devices like airbags."

I did my first driving test in 1975 in Switzerland. Hand over hand was an absolute no no. Nowadays they sell more models S and X with Yokes than wheels over there and have very very limited FSD. Was planning a model X with yoke but in Alpine roads the wheel must be the better option.

I wonder if a slightly bigger aftermarket round wheel might eventually be the best of both worlds. Also those steering wheel air bag modules make me nervous! It would be gruesome injuries if it went off when pushing the horn. I never push my horn because of it. I know they are extremely dangerous for small people and kids and also if you wear glasses. Many people are blind now thanks to steering wheel air bags.

Tesla mobile tech here. Avoid these mods at all costs. I’ve seen several 3/Y’s where the airbag deployed after an accident and the new cover made the airbag deploy incorrectly and even some pieces of the cover itself ejected right in the face of the driver.
Worst part is that when we or whoever does the documentation for the insurance company we take note of the mod. The insurance then denies any compensation for damage in your face since your mod may have caused it.
Also, this voids quite some warranties in your car. We can see in our logs every single connector you have disconnected and reconnected as soon as we connect to your car for any service you may need.
These videos are all either fully paid or sponsored by the manufacturers. And they don’t care about your safety. It’s just not worth it.
