I got my Plaid in March of Last year and lived with the Yoke for about 4 months. In July of so, I installed a Hansshow Napa leather round wheel. Every steering wheel should be made of real leather. It felt amazing in my hands. Because it was round and heavy, I was able to drive much more smoothly through parking lots and in tight turns. Then when I was alone on the road and could drive in a spirited way, I finally felt like I was driving a real performance car. I honestly can't say anything positive about that yoke accept that it didn't suck as bat as I thought it would, and it did make the care feel special and futuristic.
The horn button really sucks. I have a dent in my front bumper that most likely would have been there if I could have blew the horn fast enough before some bozo backed into me in a drive-thru.
It took 3 or 4 months, but now I actually prefer the turn signal buttons over the stalk.
I have a new Plaid on order, and I hope the wheel will feel good. I really don't want to risk messing it up by having it recovered in leather.

If Tesla had done what Ferrari do, a button on each side, that would probably be a good system. The way they have implemented it on the Model S and X wheel however is not a good implementation. Even though you get used to it, it's not intuitive at all, and you will get confused when ever the wheel/yoke is upside down or something like that. And on the Ferraris it's at you fingertip, you can feel the button, and you don't have to move anything, you just push in with the finger that's already there. In my humble opinion, they ruined the car with that non-sense. Stalks is much easier to use. You never have to think, and that's what a driver need and want. I get the futuristic look and all, but it's like Kyle say, it doesn't add anything, it just takes away from how functional it is. Being able to get a Model S Plaid with steering wheel and stalks might be enough to make a Model S interesting again.

You can tell when an old thinking person owned the car. Round steering wheels were for cars before power steering you know drives like a tank. Electric assist with three quarter turn lock to lock no upper wheel blocking view of dash is the way anyone who has never driven a car would pick.
The good news is the market for the yoke wheel as young people buying used Tesla and wanting to upgrade from the old fogey version also remove dice from mirror and foxtail from antenna.

Let's be honest most people who like the yoke or put one in their model 3/Y are nerds who will never push the car hard or take it to the track... it reminds them of a video game that's why they like it, but real car people that actually like to drive prefer a normal round steering wheel.

May look more 'boring', but it's 100x more practical and useful than the spinning wrist-breaker rectangle of death. Drove both and there's no comparison. There's a reason cars have had round steering wheels for over a century. Because they work the best. Other steering methods have been tried before many times, even a joystick, but ultimately, the steering wheel wins out every time because it's the most ergonomic, intuitive and practical. The yoke is just change for the sake of change and a weak attempt to be different. Owners who have a Tesla with a yoke hate it so much that as soon as Tesla started to offer the round wheel retrofit, it immediately sold out in their online store. That should tell you something.

I’ve driven a model S LR with the yoke since Dec 2021 and my greatest problem is the horrible horn button. I expected a NHTSA recall to move horn button to the center where it belongs. Road trips on the highway is where the yoke is great. But, it’s poor for parking and other frequent turns.
It does make the car look futuristic. But, within a year or two, I will sell this EV and wonder if there’s better resale value with round wheel.

Like! Still looks weird to me with the wheel, but maybe in time, it will be more normal. The yoke used to look weird to me, but now looks modern and fitting. We're sticking with our yoke for now. It's totally fine. But if the car had come with a wheel, we wouldn't have known better.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!!! I knew they had to someday give this option. This was my only gripe about not purchasing the Model S. I really hated the Yoke Steering and how it performed!!! The button turn signals is probably something I will have to deal with. Tesla should of kept sh*t the way it is.

I do agree I don't think the yoke is much a safety hazard, I do think that there not being stalks for turning signals is though. I think it just encourages people to use them less as now it takes more effort to find and hit them where with stalks you hit is with a single flick.
Personally just don't like the yoke though as on longer drives I like to move my hands around to keep my wrists and arms from getting stiff. Plus in city driving I tend to put my right hand on top of the wheel (around 2:00) just before turns to stagger them. That's not really possible with it. I know it's technically a less safe technique, but I find it more comfortable.

Once you get used to the buttons it is the exact opposite. Slightly moving a thumb is much faster and easier than a stalk, although it definitely takes a while to get used to it.

Seriously, though; while I think Tesla gets (and deserves) immense credit for normalizing electric cares and unquestionably has done a superb job with infrastructure, they’ve reached the point where they’re concentrating on silly gimmicks like yokes and “aggressive” FSD modes. Here’s hoping The Boring Company boss’s influence doesn’t do to Tesla what it’s done to The Bird Site…🙄

I agree with your assessment here. I don't have any experience with the yoke, but it's one of those things you just kind of know where you wouldn't care for it as much. I also don't care for capacitive touch buttons on the wheel. I think it's a dumb idea really. It's a step back in every metric other than perhaps looks.
I like turn stalks and they work and have worked perfect for ages, especially with 1-tap indication mode. I'm sure I could get used to indicator buttons, I mean I have for years with motorcycles, but I still want stalks.
And it's not that I'm against new ideas entirely and can't be convinced otherwise. I was hesitant on the M3 only having the center screen and it took a couple weeks to get used to it, but now I quite like it. However, I still would like a dedicated button for the glovebox (near the compartment). Tesla did a great job with the scroll wheels though, especially on my refresh with the metal buttons. I really prefer that for controlling volume/tracks over a knob on the dash and separate up/down volume buttons on the wheel.
I would still like to have an instrument gage at the wheel, either on the column or dash, but I'm fine without it.

About the airbag, I think why they left it to you, but in the center of the new wheel :) If you look at your video at 15:24 you can see there is no airbag in the new one that is still wrapped... Probably similar to the aftermarket steering wheel for Model 3 and Y where you transfer the airbag from the old one to the new one.

    • @Hans-gb4mv
      @Hans-gb4mv Рік тому +1

The wheel comes without the airbag installed, otherwise the tech would have to remove it again, on site, to install the wheel. Much easier, safer and faster to not pre-install it.
