Laws in most countries have loop holes for sport when it comes to assault. You wouldn't have a boxing match and then afterwards both boxers get charged with assault because in the boxing match they were punching each other.
So the "not guilty" plea is probably going to say it was part of the sports loop hole.

And the fact that they can call you for a T if you let them know how wrong they are, is straight up BS. I watch these games and wonder if they even go to school, or pass a test to be a ref. I watched a game where they HANDED the ball inbounds right in front of the ref, and no call. Hahahaha. F’ king clowns! And yes, I’ve been an umpire in baseball, all spots. Published on September 1, 2023: TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A basketball player who faced criminal charges after she was caught on camera punching a Bowling Green State University basketball player has been convicted of assault.
Former University of Memphis basketball player Jamirah Shutes was found guilty of assault Friday when she changed her previous not guilty plea to a no contest plea, court records show. She was charged back in March of this year after she was caught on camera punching BGSU’s Elissa Brett during the postgame handshake after the Falcon’s WNIT win against the Tigers.
The Senitel Tribute reports Shutes said she wanted to apologize to everyone around her for the incident.
The judge issued a $400 fine and placed her on two years of probation with the condition she completes anger management and does not commit other offenses.

Police need to arrest and handcuff the player immediately on the court in this situation to make consequences clear here and across the sport.

It’s seems to be a Memphis thing. But it’s everywhere. Watch some kids hooping videos. The you’re too small, foot stomping, standing over or in the face of opposing players. Wonder where they get it from. This sport is spiraling out of control again. Bunch of animal thugs. 18 techs in NBA to get a 1 game suspension, Dillon Brooks for Memphis. 18?? Really?? If they want to clean up sport, gotta start ejecting, suspending or fining players, schools or coaches. Whatever the individual situation calls for. This is disgusting.

"Memphis thing?" It's definitely a thing, but they all don't live in Memphis.
