  • Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson and her mother Phyllida Law received honorary doctorates from the Royal Conservatoire.
The following day they took part in one of our Creative Conversation sessions in which they were interviewed on stage by Screen lecturer Andy Dougan. The aim of the Creative Conversation is to allow renowned practitioners to share insights into their craft with an audience of our students and invited guests.
Here are Emma and Phyllida talking about a subject that strikes fear into many an actor's heart - how to handle auditions.

Emma Thompson is always wonderful, as is her mother, whom one must not miss in the episodes of Carmichael's Lord Peter Wimsey/Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club from 1973, in which she play's Wimsey's on/off girlfriend. Priceless.

I absolutely love those episodes of LPW and she is fantastic! Thank goodness for UA-cam keeping those alive. My folks and I watched them on dvd from the library when I was a teenager in the early 2000s, but you can’t find them now except for on YT.

I am not offended by the word actress. I approve of it, in fact. This actor stuff is p.c. gone hysterical.

Phyllida Law is such a pretty woman, so feminine and a beautiful role model in this age of androgynous or non binary females.

She is very pretty and feminine but apparently not that much of a role model. Her more famous and slightly androgynous daughter is vastly more entertaining.

What is that supposed to mean? You either are born feminine or you're not, a role model won't help. Make up does, sometimes, but that's not the same. You think people (women) see Phyllida Law and immediately feel the urge to put on (more) make up? And wear dresses? Or whatever it is that you personally associate with femininity?
