- Emma Thompson says the UK's failure to take in its quota of refugees is "really shaming". The actress says she thinks reaction in the UK to the crisis has "a lot to do with racism", claiming that if the migrants were white Europeans, the situation would be perceived differently. She was speaking to Newsnight's Emily Maitlis. The UK is way over populated. That is a fact. I don't recognise the place anymore. Its hard to find the Britishness. There is a limit to what a small island kingdom can absorb. Why don't some wealthy Arab countries help out these people or transport them to the USA or South America where there is actually some space. Also if 'global warming' does cause the temperature of the planet to rise in all locations then millions of hectares of land will be farmable and habitable in Russia. Would climate change refuges be taken in? This is all mad.
One of the largest groups heading to Calais are from Albania. It's got nothing to do with racism. The issue is why are people from countries moving from country without war, to country without war, to country without war to get to Europe?

It is simply a fact that we prefer people who look like us, and have things in common with us, namely, being European or of European descent. I wouldn't want to bring in hundreds of thousands of Romanians either, but there is a difference. I know you're too thick to think about the subtle differences between peoples, but its important, okay love?
There is a difference between a christian from palestine, coming to this country, and a muslim from palestine, coming to this country. Those differences can be weighed and measured, and we can understand whether or not they are going to fit into our society. I totally agree we should provide a legal pathway for asylum seekers so they don't have to risk life and limb to make it to a European country.BUT we aren't doing that yet, and accepting a quota from refugee camps in just one war torn country (if that is what happens) is not the same as providing a "normal" asylum facility. Closer to home there are asylum seekers and Calais getting themselves killed trying to get through the Tunnel. This is all caused by previous Governments decision to move the UK border to Calais and not to provide ANY means for legitimate asylum seekers to apply. I believe all these problems at all the flash points in Europe are being caused by fences and the absence of legitimate routes of application. In trying to protect ourselves, we have created anarchy and loss of life on an amazing scale.

Why on earth are 90% of the comments here so negative and insulting? Someone HAS to speak up about these matters and I think it's incredibly brave of Emma that she does! We actually need more people to do so and especially people who are so in the focus of public like actors. Yes, she is an actress (and a brilliant one), but why would it mean that she can't have insight in politics and climate change? Has anyone of those calling her "privileged", "on moral high ground" or "without a clue" ever taken an actual look at her and her life? She lives perfectly normally in the same street of London she has been born in, she has been to the arctic with Greenpeace, she has been to Liberia after it was devastated by civil war to help rebuild the country, she attends refugee councils regularly, she even adopted her son Tindy after she and her husband met him there. Calling her clueless is absolutely unfounded and playing her down to another privileged rich celebrity is in my opinion highly inappropriate as she's at least trying to do something (in contrast to most!!) and brave enough to talk about what no one wants to hear!

If 15,000 white people turned up in my city we'd all be moaning because our employment growth is terrible, we have people waiting for housing all the time, not enough homeless shelters, budget cuts, etc. Then there would be 15,000 people with nothing but the clothes on their backs and no sponsors. There is no good reason in the US for all our people not to have a roof over their heads yet they don't. People resent refugees bumping the line and get housing when Americans have been on waiting lists. People even resented our own hurricane refugees who flooded Houston with 250,000 people and got housing quickly. I don't think it's much different with Europe. Couple that with the nature of their origins, possible terrorist cells, and past experiences in Europe, e.g. riots in France, homeless ex-refugees on busy streets in Rome, and so on. I'd like to hear more from Europeans how it's going with people who migrated there 10 years ago from middle eastern countries.
We had a German exchange student once who lived with us. He ate our food, went to our public high school, had his own bedroom, and our house wasn't that big. I suppose Emma Thompson would like to take in a few migrants and look at them as exchange students in a similar way. Not only would it make things easier, and take some stress off the governments, one could look at it as a sort of cultural exchange. When wealthy people preach to the choir I expect that they would walk the talk. Some people in Germany have invited migrants into their homes, at least for dinner.
If you expect others to welcome people with open arms, then set an example. Often it's a "not in my back yard" thinking, and "I donate money." But just like our German exchange student who came to live with us merely to experience American life and school for a year or so, Ms. Thompson could do the same. Or she could build a row of small houses and call it Thompson Village.
Nothing quite like a celebrity to remind you that actually, the world isn't going to shit! :D
Well, of course if the migrants were white Europeans we would be more welcoming - because they would already share our European culture or would readily assimilate to it. Muslims from countries in Africa and Asia which have never known democracy, where education is limited and where people are obsessed with their religion, are a risk. We have enough experience with the Muslims who were already here before 2015.
ET should keep to acting and stay out of politics. Leave that to the politicians.
