'83 VW Rabbit Diesel Factory Turbo Timer?

Now, on another topic. When you START the car and you hear a little wind up, or you push down the gas pedal and hear a little wind up (a little high pitched wheee that gets higher)... THAT'S the turbo fan anticipating it's use and spinning up. :)

ha, just to be thorough, some TDI cooling systems will run after the ignition is off. So you might be hearing coolant pump also, I can't tell from the video. lol

It's not a turbo timer nor does it have anything to do with the turbo parts. It is part of the cooling mechanism and has been on 4 cylinder engines since 1990's, just a radiator cooling fan. If it runs the battery down or doesn't quit then you need to replace the thermostat module that controls it. My 1997 Saturn does the same thing and depending on how hot it is, can run for a good minute or two after the key is removed, it will also trigger at long stoplights. If it were the turbo fan, your intake manifold and/or your seals would be damaged. :) Just a thermostat controlled radiator fan, like most every 4 cylinder built in the last 20 years.

I've never heard of a Rabbit diesel having a turbo timer. More than likely your ignition switch is on its way out. Do you still have the car? It's a nice one!
