A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by the anticipation of the new (school) year. I wanted to do one last huge setup, with a lot of different gear, before the semester starts and I get busy. I was super happy with where this one went.
At the heart of it is the Arturia Keystep Pro, which is sequencing four melodic lines (bass on ARP Odyssey, pads on SH-01a, melodic arp on Subharmonicon, and granular melody on Clouds), while also providing clock for the non-MIDI DFAMs. Despite the huge assortment of gear on the table, this one just worked for me because the instruments each have a really beautiful baseline sound.
Arturia Keystep Pro - Sequencing and clock
Korg ARP Odyssey into Empress Echosystem - Bass
Roland SH-01a into Strymon Ola into Meris Ottobit Jr. - Pad
Moog Subharmonicon into Meris Polymoon - Arp melody thing
Mutable Instruments Clouds into Strymon Magneto - Granular melody
Moog DFAM into Empress Multidrive into Union Tube & Transistor Lab - Kick and snare
Moog DFAM into Erica Synths & Ninja Tune Zen Delay - Hi hats and noise weirdness
Written and recorded in a 48-hour period and uploaded as is, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

Appreciate how you break down what everything is doing..dope 👍🏾
Perfect full arranged track with a lot of nuances, without a DAW in 48 hours. I'm jealous.
Best bass guitar I’ve ever heard. And I’m very old.
I'm not crying kuz I'm light hearted, I'm crying kuz I love it!
Another awesome jam!! I have to be careful watching this guy's vids because I always end up seeing at least one piece of gear that I can't possibly live without lol. It gets expensive being a fan of this dude ;)
Absolutely insane man, my new fav! :o
Often when I see setups this large, the results don't always live up to expectations. This is impressive in every sense of the word. I'm just now getting from a one voice setup to a two voice setup (hopefully three soon), and this has given me a lot of ideas of where to go from the present. Every aspect of this is amazing, and it's great to see how you utilize each synth's features to the fullest.
This is excellent - as other people have said the breakdown of what’s going on is great. A lot of effort in this and it totally pays off.
I absolutely love the Zen Delay, it really is more of an instrument than just an effect. It's a great secret weapon.
Found your channel the other day and soooo glad I did! I've been hooked on your videos. As someone who has been wanting to experiment with synths for a long time merely out of love for the sound, it's magic watching you create and explain what you're doing. Gives me inspiration that I might be able to create something semicool myself someday. I guess for me it's just a matter of deciding on an entry level at this point. Definitely my favorite channel on UA-cam at the moment!
Did you find your entry yet m8? Feeling like im kinda in the same position as you :)
That's a beautiful track Jay.
This just popped up and I assumed it was new. Found I'd already Liked it. Even by your standards this is a banger
Thank you. One of my favourites. Putting up a live version in the near future.
@@JayHoskingyou might also have sold me on a Zen Delay for an Intellijel Cascadia...
Wow! Your music is so excellent, these 5 minutes were an invitation to a dream...
Many thanks.
Thank you for all explanations as well.
Congrats from France!
You truly are the master of DAWless performance! I Can't believe how much things you can manage at once, and each piece has a carefully chosen role and spot to shine. And you manage to never make it sound overwhelming or show-offy but always extremely musical.
Love how you comment on hardware function and what you are doing in real time. Really helpful.
This is one of the best tracks I've heard! It's just got my heart set on it! Thank you so much for such a creative work!
Can listen to this jam for hours 💚✌️ Thanks J 🤗
I love seeing hardware!
That was really cool, i enjoyed everything about that set.
This is beautiful, 4 spins later, and.still on cloud 9 - so many small gold nuggets, the Hoskingianna is strong here🌥️✨
Fuuuuuu, that was gorgeous. Almost instantly became one of my favorite jams. Just wanted to quickly check it out on my phone and ended up watching the whole thing. I have to go on my computer and check it with the headphones!
Best instructional/compositional channels re : how to create fantastic music with a plethora of gear. Thanks for all that you do!
Ridiculously good
Damn, Jay! This is massive, indeed. One of my favorites of yours. Simply beautiful. That Subharmonicon
I played around with the zen delay before it's so amazing
Nice annotations! Thanks!
Epic! much to take in....just came to see what the Keystep could do! Fab jam
Great Jam and fantastic explanations. Well done :)
Absolutely stunning! One of the best tracks I have heard in ages! Great gear - true - but expertly used and musically delightful. New subscriber - job done! Can't wait to check out more of your videos.
Absolutely right, if this gear is in the hands of a noob it will shit out bricks
Amazing.
Simply wonderful!
Quantize has left the building.
This has become one of my favourite tracks to bop to when driving~
So beautiful
Wow, just wow!
As usual , so floored by the lushness of the track , that it's 2/3rds through before I remember to 'like' . Amazing work yet again sir .
This massive jam is waaaaayyyy better than the last massive jam I experienced.
Great stuff as always, Jay. That ARP Odyssey sounds awesome - love the opening arpeggio. Reminded me of Deadmau5 "The Veldt". Sorry to hear you're not getting along with the KeyStep. It's been on my radar since Loopop did a review on it a couple of months back. One thing that occurred to me while watching the video would be to experiment with routing the MIDI data from the KeyStep through the NDLR perhaps? Maybe set up some sequences on the KeyStep to mute certain tracks/parts and allow the NDLR to take over i.e use MIDI CC messages via the control channel on the NDLR to automate the Chord Degree or Type. Could be interesting? Just a weird random thought :) I saw Slentendre Beer achieve something similar with their BeatStep Pro / KeyStep combo.
Really great man! That DFAM patch for the kick and snare is f-ing bad! Great stuff
Very cool! Thanks for sharing.
Gorgeous.
Really nice stuff here
This made life better.
Tha ARP, omggg
Yeah, it has tone to spare!
Absolutely holy shit man. What an amazing array of dream equipment and superb performance and process details. I've seen that Zen Delay a couple times now and absolutely on my wishlist!
Amazing performance + extremely helpful detail on what you are doing. Fantastic work! Inspiring!
Amazing work as always, thanks for sharing 👍
I always want to just turn on your videos and zone out, but then I get so wrapped up in your comments I can't stop watching!
Wow, super nice sound and well explained!
That's really amazing. LOVE it! Love the longer ones!
DFAM + ZEN DELAY = ♥️
Absolutely beautiful and inspirational
omfg. this is pure gold. so fucking envious of your talent. I need this on spotify!!!!!!!
Nice work. Good sound.
Nailed the Ending!! One of my favs from you thus far.
That is such an awesome Setup. I could not handle all that at once. I love what you did with this
Really nice live
Was browsing random Keystep videos aaaand this is so super nice! Beautiful track.
Brilliant!
Jeez man, way too good!! 👍🏾👍🏾
I really love your text explanation ! and great work as always. you are my fav live jam youtuber :)
Your command of this mother ship is taking us to another dimension.
Thanks for this!
Absolutely in love with the sounds produced man! Very lush jam as well. Cheers! ✌😍👍
SubH sounds good 😎👍🏼
That was awesome!
I think you're gonna need a bigger boat!
Dawg, your channel is lit. I love your music so much.
And...... Still as great sounding... A pure joy......
You didn’t gel with the keystep for the same reason I’ve not gelled with my programmable step sequencer. It’s not a creative process like non deterministic chance ones like Bloom or Varigates, or a Mimetic Digitalis or Turing a machine through a quantiser. It’s happy accidents we live for in the modular world and the ability discover sweet spots as we play. Great setup up and progressions here though.
Outstanding
Wow I'm impressed! Beautiful!
This is super lush. 🤟❤️🤟
I’m having huge Production issues at the moment so this was a welcome break!
Beutiful composition
Masterful
Big ambition.
Great to see more gear being integrated successfully.
Second dfam arriving tomorrow.
Beautiful music! It's probably just the mood I'm in this morning, but I was just thinking that all this setup and explanation would need to cross the fine line into satire would be the addition of a Moon Armada Baby-bot. 😜
possibly the best yet!
really cool!
Really enjoyed this, great work!
Wow what an excellent job you are very creative
This is a seriously well set up piece of work. Respect man!
Nice jam ! I am a big fan of Arturia's keyboards. I heavily use my Keystep and its sequencer in my own work, but the Keystep Pro seems like an amazing tool. A bit on the higher end for my finances, but who knows ... maybe one day !
Keep up the great work.
Pretty nice jam. You sold some Zen Delay with this! The sole thing I did not quite enjoy was the rhythms produced by Clouds. I felt they did not have a place in the ensemble. Your using the Zen Delay to intro the hi-hat sound was, on the other hand, absolutely brilliant.
Lovely!
This is wonderful, I’ve got a little understanding of how some parts of this work but the whole thing, I am wonderfully clueless
Superb. Love the commentary too.
Nice setup :)
Amazing sounds
Damn this is great. Thanks so much for the break down
Very nice tune and video! Fun to follow along!
You got skills!
amazing track, great setup, so well glued together. keep it up man.
Great tune, and you did a great job explaining your process. A well deserved subscribe
That was amazing!
JESUS you're awesome
Beautiful! Now I'm waiting for the Zen Delay version for the whole day.
Beautiful jam!
Very nice
amazing
this sounds so great, awesome man
Bravo!
