A Trick Of The Tail is a majestic work of brilliance. They had a lot to prove as this was the first LP without Peter Gabriel and Phil definitely sounds a lot like Pete on this record. So glad to see you appreciate the beauty of this song, Nick. My own favourite of the album, and certainly one of my Genesis favourites overall. And I've got news for you: the more you listen to it, the more you'll like it. Cheerio! 🐝
Hi Nick, yes 70's prog music, so many great bands and what a time to be a teenager! Keep saying it but you have to listen to Entangled & Squonk together from this album.
Lexi should never miss a Genesis or Yes song reaction. Your reactions are good. It's just that Genesis, and especially Yes music, should be enjoyed with Alexa because your reactions to that particular music is greater than the sum of their parts. This song is my favorite from Trick, and she should have been with you on this.
It's very hard to say which is my favourite track on that super album. But Mad Man Moon is up there - particularly for the amazing lyrics! And that track in particular shows off just how superb a keyboard player Tony Banks is.
In 1967 i was telling my freinds i could hear the clear progression in rock. It wasnt until genesis merged the classical sound with rock i finally heard what i was listening for. The music stands on its own without yrics. Then add the lyrics and you get a masterpiece of creativity. Fabulous and sounds as good now as then. Seriously, sophistic music.
Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering should be listened to in their entirety Follow that up with the live Seconds Out (one of the best live albums of the 70s IMO) Great stuff! Genesis had a lot to prove after Peter Gabriel left them and Boy, did they ever with these efforts
A Trick of the Tail is absolute genius. Genesis is the band that I'm most passionate about, so it's delightful to watch you and Lex on your journey through their catalog. I'm actually slightly envious of you, as part of me yearns to experience these songs again for the first time. I'm particularly fond of this track and actually had the image of the flying horse made of sand (pictured on the album cover) as my only tattoo! :-) Keep up the great work!
When Doug Helvering reacted to this song, he had the score to analyze and said that it's a true mini masterpiece. He said that it sounds like Tony wrote it to Peter. Yeah, he's right. The lyrics are as great as all the music here. What a gem. My favorite song from Trick Of The Tail.
Hey you two❤ One of the best albums of all time!!! So much a part of our life 45+ yrs... Just masterful music!!!! Omg Nick this was breath taking live!!!! Best concerts of my life! It's Phil at his best......
I love this band and I think its cool that you guys our playing this kinda stuff for the younger generation to hear , Good music is good music there is no age on it.. There music has good flo, that and with all the time changes and there use of volume through a song. With Genesis listening on a good system with a sub woofer and the louder the better, you'll hear the music in a different way it brings out more of the emotion of there music. GOD BLESS and keep ROCKING
I remember when I bought this album back in the day in the cassette version. It´d been out a mere few months, and I was a just teenager, I´m that old. I just could´t stop playing it. I was obsessed. I was already familiar with their previous albums, all of which I adored. It was never an issue for me the Gabriel vs Collins lead vocals. They both do it for me either together or separately, never undestood that discussion. As for this track, well, it´s "Mad, man, moon", what can be said, just epic!
Wonderful reaction Nick, ATOTT is a timeless masterpiece, Mad Man Moon is one of Tony Banks' gems along with One for the Vine and Firth of Fifth. You must listen to "Entangled" from the same album, it was co-written by Steve Hackett and Tony, you will not believe your ears, it is absolutely sublime. Cheers
fantastic piano playing from tony banks am i right in saying that tony banks rick wakeman and keith emerson are classically trained pianists i would say that all three are just genius i can't say that one is better than the other i would say that tony rick and keith the best keyboard players of all time keep up the good work nick nlex i love listerning to the both of you
I guess the emotion I experienced when I first heard this album was one of relief. Peter's departure hit Genesis fans greatly, and I was no exception. Of course no internet in those days, so little snippets of information and lots of rumours would circulate in the music press about the process of finding a replacement. When it was announced that Phil would sing there were many doubters and fans worried whether it would work. So to hear 'Dance On The Volcano' then 'Entangled' (my favourite Genesis song probably) and then 'Squonk'! My word, why were we worried? This is a great song from Tony Banks, and Lex should definitely listen to it, preferably the whole album on Patreon as you guys deserve to be able to listen to another Genesis album in full in your off time.
Andy Edwards, a prog drummer who also has an excellent UA-cam channel, stationed in England, has a great couple of recent videos called "The English Aesthetic", which, he says, permeates English prog bands, but not necessarily Canadian prog bands, and which may account for the fact that Rush doesn't sound like Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, Renaissance, Strawbs and the other English progressive bands who fill the albums with their particular aesthetic. It is an insightful set of videos which I know will titillate your mind's ear. Totally agree with you that this album still have a Gabriel vibe. This song was particularly good. Andy Edwards also has a video that says that prog peaked in '73 or maybe '74. "Tales" kinda proved you can't top "Close to the Edge", and there is also "Firth of Fifth", "Supper's Ready", "Echoes", "Tarkus", "Pictures at an Exhibition", "In the Court of the Crimson King, etc, etc. even perhaps the extent of Zappa, and still progressing. BTW...That cool XTC song reminded me of several bands at different points. I heard "Barrytown", "Veronica", Weezer and Zappa...as well as Beach Boys. It was a real composite! Also great show.
Wow fantastic reaction to my favourite album of all time. I feel that you hit the nail on the head with Genesis and ‘Goosebumps’. I have been listening to Genesis for over 40 years and I still get goosebumps with parts of certain songs ( 9/8 section of Supper’s Ready, live version of Cinema Show from ‘Seconds Out’, ‘Los Endos’, Firth of fifth to name a few). As others have said, the entire album is amazing. You should listen to the entire album track by track, make sure you leave the epic Los Endos to the last as it reprises themes from other songs. Rick Beato named this album as no 13 in this top 40 albums of all time, he said he listens to this at least once a month. Of course Lex needs to listen to this one, I think she will love it.
I immediately got excited when I saw that you were going to listen to this as I knew you would love it. It's so much fun to see you react knowing what is coming up and seeing you just blown away like I was as a teen. The whole album is great. I would love to see Alexia react if she's up to it. Cheers m8 😎👍🍁
Love this album!!! What's not to love... "Dance On A Volcano", "Squonk", "Entangled", "Ripples", "Robbery, Assault & Battery", "Trick Of The Tail", and one of the best album closers "Los Endos". I don't think they played "Mad Man Moon" that often as I can't find any live concert videos out there. BRILLIANT!!!
SOSO SWEET! gorgeous metaphors & lyrical imagery! Similarly you haven't tried PFM yet (Italian YES/Genesis). Their "Photos of Ghost" classic album in English if you prefer. There is SO MUCH under the popular radar that typical 70s Progfans won't suggest
Nick, great reaction. This album is the seminal one for me when it comes to Genesis. Squonk was basically my initiation to the group and I began my exploration and eventual love affair from there. I was in that awkward age where I really came upon them post Peter Gabriel, and really loved all of the Phil stuff, and then also fell in love with the Gabriel era after the fact. But this album will always have a special place in my heart. It warms my heart that you enjoyed this as much as you do, and the band in general. Great reactions. Cheers to you guys.
Genesis is in a class by themselves. Genius writers. Everything is so smooth and natural in both the music and lyrics. Orchestral. As I mentioned below, some think Tony's song is for Peter. And Gabriel is the mad man moon.....looking for greener grasses? a dream?
Ua we need to do it all....everysingle cut priceless the flow .... God only knows how many copies we had.... Except our priceless audiophile version. That has not been opened. Cheers
Great reaction to a great song keep enjoying your genesis journey mate the lamb lies down on broadway full album is a must for you and lex next it will blow your mind
Wonderful song on a wonderful album! The first track on "Trick of the Tail" is "Dance on a Volcano," which is absolutely amazing! True prog at its best!
They've reacted to a Genesis marathon that featured the first cuts from Trick of the Tail, Wind and Wuthering, and And Then there were Three. Lex in particular seemed to really dig them!
@@dav147 @Dav147 I'm probably in the minority in that I started w/Lunatic Soul first, and discovered Riverside. I own every release from both. LS was originally a concept, side project, consisting of the first two LS releases. In a sense......though completely different in sound, LS & the continuation of the concept project with LSII, reminds me a bit of the Lamb. But just in substance, as it's pretty much a journey through reincarnation (in a nutshell).
Love this reaction. This song is probably Genesis most beautiful and heart tugging piece in their catalog.. This album could be a good candidate for Patreon. Wouldn't Lex love this song? The best with Phil on vocals!
Of the Phil Collins period Blood on the Rooftops is probably my favorite song, but this one from this stellar album (definitely listen to all the tracks from it) is probably my second favorite. It's both subtle and sweeping which might be a good description of what Genesis does best and definitely have Lex have a listen with you on a soon to be video.
I think you'll be doing another video ...lol. You described Genesis very well. It's very calming - comforting even. Also, like you growing up with Mom and Dad (from Hamburg and Bielefeld) where classical was often being played, I naturally gravitated to Genesis. Their music doesn't tire - even today. Tom from Toronto P.s HEADS UP: The Musical Box (aka the most epic Genesis tribute band) will recreate the 1973/74 Selling England by the Pound Tour in 2024. Start Saving your Nickels as you west coastersmay need to travel. - This may be your last chance as they have been doing this since 1998. Their shows are beyond amazing - I've seen then at least 15 times.
I agree 100% Tom. Wasn't old enough to see the early 70's Genesis lineup but seeing "The Musical Box" live puts me there. I've seen the Montreal band 10 times or so at Massey Hall and at The Danforth Music Hall and once at Mississauga's Performing Centre For The Arts, but my favourite was at Casino Rama during an ice storm and we had 4th row tickets.
You said it... the structure and classical elements in every masterpiece. I only got into Genesis mid-term yet I didn't like stereotypical 'prog' like Rick Wakeman's random keyboard stuff so I've been mystified by the prog label. These guys went off the theme but it always returned and it was always melodic and musically brilliant. I also got into the Gabriel era, most of which was excellent, but dare I say some was Gabriel being self indulgent. Forget all that, they were brilliant!
Genesis’ Yes & ELP all have different sounds. I could talk for hours about there music. I do not compare them there is great joy to be found in each band. This track is One of Phil Collins best Vocal performances for sure. It’s all Symphonic’ Art’ Cinematic,Theatrical ‘Progressive Rock. 🙏
This album is just the best! I only recently discovered this early Genesis and I'm hooked haven't listened to much of anything else except The Cure! LoL
This song is just one of many Tony Banks epics. I'm old enough to remember this album being released in 1976, and I was completely blown away by how this band could survive the loss of Peter Gabriel and come out with something equally as brilliant as what had gone before. 'A Trick Of The Tail' is just a masterpiece of an album, as is the follow-up album (released amazingly the same year, 1976) 'Wind And Wuthering'. Thanks for the great reaction to a great song.
Yep, agree with everything you say. Also, the 'Trick' recording sessions came quickly after Steve Hackett's terrific first solo album 'Voyage of the Acolyte', hence Hackett's lack of writing input on 'Trick'. (All the stuff he'd written went on his solo album)
Yeah, because Genesis didn't even know if they would carry on without Peter, Steve went and did a solo album. Eventually that led to tensions in the band. But it makes me chuckle that a while later ALL the Genesis guys were doing solo albums.
It's a really beautiful song, with awesome chord progressions. There is plenty more one could say about it. For me the whole album is so familiar. I generally only listen to it these days via reaction videos. lol
Genesis is one of those bands that would put together a 5-6 album run that was just outstanding. That requires a level of consistent greatness that very few bands ever get to.
I agree with you. Only YES,Jethro Tull. Chicago, The WHO, The Rolling Stonrs and The Beatles have reached that level of greatness for several consecutive whole albums!
@@kbrewski1 Well said. For me, the 'golden run' of Genesis is Nursery Cryme>Wind and Wuthering (but Trespass was still a very good album). It was the parting with Steve Hackett that took Genesis down a different fork in the road. Steve stayed on the prog path, Genesis took a different route.
It actually took until part way through And Then There Were Three for them to start sounding much different. But apart from Pete's flute breaks, the instrumentalists are pretty much intact until ATTW3. Many Genephiles consider Nursery Cryme to Wind and Wuthering "Hackett Era", because just listen to those fills Hackett layers in the background on this track! The one around "so I pretended to have wings for my arms, and took off in the air" just makes the feel of that moment.
Genesis' endurance has always been so remarkable.
Genesis is the Best...They combine classical music style with Rock, their music is structured, melodic, not flashy, pure quality composed to last like the old classical music by the 3 greatest, Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven ...Tony Banks is a gifted composer and this song is another jewel to be cherished and enjoyed...You can listen to a great Genesis song countless of time and it never gets old
Not to mention that they throw in some metal once in a while just for good measure.
Totally agree. Genesis Music is timeless, they're Masters.

Follow that up with the live Seconds Out (one of the best live albums of the 70s IMO)
Great stuff!
Genesis had a lot to prove after Peter Gabriel left them and Boy, did they ever with these efforts
I agree. Those two great albums are best listened to just from start to finish as the flow of music is perfect
Mad Man Moon is my favourite genesis song of all time. The arpeggiating in the instrumental is amazing
This album shows us at last, that Tony Banks was all along the greatest songwriter in Genesis.
Oh! Yes! Tony was Genesis
Hi, this music opens so many windows! Classical approach takes off every tension. Breathing gets calmer and wider. Poetry!
Hey you two❤
One of the best albums of all time!!!
Lex would love this song. It´s beautiful.
Absolutely fabulous track Nick as is the whole album 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
Totally Brilliant Song.
So good.
Great Album, also.
Keep Rockin'🎸

Cheers
Oh most definitely 'Entangled' a piece of heaven incarnate.up their with Cinema Show and FOF.
You can't go wrong with a full album review here. A+ Genesis.
This and Ripples are my favourite tracks on what is a glorious album
fantastic piano playing from tony banks am i right in saying that tony banks rick wakeman and keith emerson are classically trained pianists i would say that all three are just genius i can't say that one is better than the other i would say that tony rick and keith the best keyboard players of all time keep up the good work nick nlex i love listerning to the both of you
I guess the emotion I experienced when I first heard this album was one of relief.
Unbelievable great album at their peak.
Saw this in concert. Loved it!
@@kbrewski1 Neither "Blood on the Rooftops" and "Many too Many", I never knew why...
SOSO SWEET! gorgeous metaphors & lyrical imagery! Similarly you haven't tried PFM yet (Italian YES/Genesis). Their "Photos of Ghost" classic album in English if you prefer. There is SO MUCH under the popular radar that typical 70s Progfans won't suggest
Play this every summer ...genius music from Genesis greatest band of all time !
Great reaction! This entire album deserves a listen. My second favorite Genesis album, right behind Selling England By The Pound.
@@mickeyd6444 Now that you mention it... It seems to be coming back to me.
My favorite tour.
With Billy on drums and the boys on fire, a high point in life. 🎉❤
will always be back for 70's Genesis, just sublime. Hooked on latest Riverside album 🔥🔥🔥
Me too on Riverside's new one. Hope the side project of Lunatic Soul continues as well.
@@gog583 yes pal it's just great, LS I've only heard through shaded woods, was excellent
@@gog583 il give it a listen, love the lamb.
Reacción de 70's Genesis sin Alexia ? por Dios Nick, ella NUNCA tiene que estar ausente en una reaccion de la mejor banda de todos los tiempos, abrazo
Love this reaction. This song is probably Genesis most beautiful and heart tugging piece in their catalog.. This album could be a good candidate for Patreon. Wouldn't Lex love this song? The best with Phil on vocals!
I don't know--I like this one a lot, but Ripples, from the same album, is a nearly perfect piece.
Tom from Toronto
P.s HEADS UP: The Musical Box (aka the most epic Genesis tribute band) will recreate the 1973/74 Selling England by the Pound Tour in 2024.
Best band of all time.
🙏
About time! This song stuck to the walls of my soul for many years.
Now let’s hear some IQ!
Born Brilliant for Lex 😊
To me this album is peak Genesis. It think Alexia would love it all. You must share it!
Listening to this album is like watching great movie!!
Just those beautiful ending chords 😊
This album is just the best! I only recently discovered this early Genesis and I'm hooked haven't listened to much of anything else except The Cure! LoL
Dance on a Volcano rocks! Opener for this record.Gotta hear it!
Lex definitely needs to hear this!!
I generally only listen to it these days via reaction videos. lol
Trick of the Tale is a Magestic piece of composition which must be heard in it’s entirety. Thank you 💫❤️☝️
Genesis is one of those bands that would put together a 5-6 album run that was just outstanding. That requires a level of consistent greatness that very few bands ever get to.
I agree with you. Only YES,Jethro Tull. Chicago, The WHO, The Rolling Stonrs and The Beatles have reached that level of greatness for several consecutive whole albums!
@@kbrewski1
Well said. For me, the 'golden run' of Genesis is Nursery Cryme>Wind and Wuthering (but Trespass was still a very good album). It was the parting with Steve Hackett that took Genesis down a different fork in the road. Steve stayed on the prog path, Genesis took a different route.
Genesis is my favorite but Rush had a great run too between 2112 and Grace Under Pressure. As good as any band during that period.
Genesis..always!!!
Amazing band, great reaction.
From 3:41 when Steve's gently, almos soulful guitar steps in....OMG (and also from 11:23 on).
