  • The demo of Oasis's classic song Columbia contains three samples, the first of which can be heard over the intro. The version here is taken from an out-of-phase version of the White Label demo kindly provided by Tom S, which helps to make the speech clearer.
    I have included a transcript of the speech, based in part on info from recording engineer Anjali Dutt. Many thanks to her for helping to decipher this sample.
    The source from which this speech was sampled is unknown, so any help on this would be much appreciated if you recognise it.
    The brief excerpt from the original recording used here is presented as 'fair use' according to the 1976 Copyright Act, as it is intended for the purposes of research, criticism, or commentary.

    I had always assumed that the speech at the beginning of Columbia was just Liam ranting some nonsensical stuff off mic. Listening to this, this is obviously not the case. I’ve got a feeling that whatever this is, is destined to remain a mystery.

      Daniel Short Yep, I agree this sample is highly unlikely to be found. It's so obscure and there's very little to go on. Only thing I can add is that the speech here sounds to me like it's performed dialogue, perhaps from a film soundtrack. Just speculating though.

      Hey David! Columbia has, as you have stated, has two mystery elements to it. I can only guess that “The Realies” know the truth......But it seems they are not for giving anything away. I doubt that even the then members of Oasis remember the origins of the samples. I remember an interview with Noel, where he said “There’s not too much stuff on Definitely Maybe that makes you think; What’s that F***ing noise?” Well, now then! Great research by the way David. I hope, one day, we will discover where those two mystery samples came from.

      Daniel Short That's a great Noel quote! Spot on for this Columbia mystery too. I asked Noel about one of the other Columbia demo samples (the Hare Krishna type chant) when he did the Reddit Q&A a few years back. He said he had no idea where it was from, but vaguely recalled they were recording stuff off the radio to use as samples. The other thing is that all three samples (including the Tony Benn one) are uncleared, meaning there could be legal issues if their sources were identified and made public.

      This article gives a lot of great info on sample clearance, and some of the issues with uncleared samples. www.google.com/amp/s/www.soundonsound.com/sound-advice/sample-clearance%3famp

    Nice one David. Yes, I understand that there could be copyright issues if these samples where to be indentified. Still, frustrating for us lot!😂 Like I said before, I always accepted that the rant at the start of Columbia was Liam being daft.......But, no! Could be some random stuff off of the radio couldn’t it? To think that no one, not even the band, know where these samples came from is a tad difficult to believe.....for me anyway. Ah,well..... Let the mystery continue I guess.😔 Nice corresponding with you mate.👍

      You're welcome! Yes I think these mysteries will remain unsolved. The Tony Benn sample probably has a slightly better chance of turning up than the others, since we know the speaker and the text he's reading. The other samples are truly "needle in haystack" obscure. :) Especially the chant, which I discovered is actually made up of syllables cut & spliced together to make a phrase. This means the unidentified source recording might not feature a chant as such, making it even harder to find.

      David Huggins The chant at the end of Columbia is equally as mysterious as the one at the beginning. I always heard the looped section of the chant as “It doesn’t feel like ya”. But the vocals have been treated with a pitch shifter, so that’s probably not even what is being sung! Ho hum.😂

    • @davidhuggins16

      It's an odd clip for sure! The phrase at the very end sounds to me like "ev-ery ni-ight", but it's hard to be sure given the pitch shifting and reverb. When I put together these videos back in 2014 I initially thought perhaps the chant could be transcribed (& translated), making it possible to search the lyrics to identify the song. But because it's actually cut and spliced syllables, that's impossible. I do wonder if The Realies did that detailed editing, or if the chant was already in that form when they sampled it for use in Columbia.

      David Huggins I guess only “The Realies” would know the answer regarding the editing of the chant. Sounds to me like the handclaps etc were added after the sample was looped.....But I don’t really know.😔 As for the full chant, sounds like “It doesn’t feel like you’re something....Maybe mine!” to my ears anyway. But again, that’s probably totally wrong!😂

      @davidhuggins16  6 років тому +1

      Yes, good point. I could hear it as that too! Part of the problem is that the fidelity of the original recording they sampled from seems quite poor (rolled off high frequencies), plus the reverb has softened and blurred the transients that would make the voice more intelligible. The handclaps were indeed added later, when Oasis recorded an unreleased studio take of Columbia at Sawmills. If you put the sample out of phase on that version (included on the Safety Copy of Masters) you hear just the handclaps, plus the stereo reverb that was added to the mono source.
