Echoes of the Labyrinth
An experiment in treating a recording I made recently of an Ormolu clock chime. In this piece I replayed the chimes at several speeds simultaneously, with a layer of reverb added to each. A higher register layer was generated by pitching the chimes up an octave, passing them through Michael Norris's "Spectral Weave" plugin, and adding slow phasing (from Sinevibes Whirl) and heavy reverb (courtesy Valhalla Plate) to the results.
The lower register chimes I thought had a vague "family resemblance" to some of the metallic resonances heard in Delia Derbyshire's track The Delian Mode. However this is not intended as a direct recreation of those sounds, but rather as an experiment with the Ormolu clock as a sound source to create a broadly similar type of ambience. (If you play back The Delian Mode at x8 speed some of the sounds normally heard as low metallic impacts are rendered as bright chimes; this gave me the idea of experimenting with pitching down the Ormolu clock sound, which when heard at original speed has a bright sparkling tonality).

A new singing bowl recording treated with reverb and slow filter sweeps (courtesy Sinevibes' Whirl plugin), in an attempt to get a swirling texture roughly approximating that heard in Delia Derbyshire's classic track Blue Veils and Golden Sands. Some ambient drones I made from a new recording of a Coolicon lampshade. In making these sounds I was very much inspired by Delia Derbyshire. Effects applied to the raw recording included ring modulation, distortion, tremolo and heavy reverb. Photo is a closeup shot of a shell, turned negative and processed with a blue filter and a layer of film grain.

My attempt at making an alternate soundtrack for footage of Coventry shot by Hainbach. The sounds are derived from a series of percussive impacts on a ceramic object (with heavy reverb), plus some droning textures from Spitfire Audio's Tape Orchestra instrument. An old dinner gong, which I recorded to submit to Delia Derbyshire Day's "Found Sound Friday" collection in February 2021. Recorded at original speed, original speed with reverb added, then the reverberated version at half the original speed and pitch.

Test upload. This is a clip from an audio file I put together in Audacity. It's samples from some late 50s electronic music cut into short sections, heavily reverbed and crossfaded, then slowed down by 800% using Paul Stretch to give an ambient droning texture. The slideshow is stills from the film Alien, just because I thought the sounds somehow suited those images.
