I took a long break from crocheting and now that I have started again, there are so many UA-cam videos on various stitches that I am learning new things from them.
That was a great lesson and just what I was looking for, thank you so much. The question I would like to ask is this. To make the border stay flat, do you keep crocheting into the back loop of each row? Also do you need to continue crocheting into every other stitch or is that only for the first two rows?🇦🇺🦘😍
Hi, When I made this video, those were the only stitches I knew, so that's what I did. You can crochet edgings through both loops like regular crochet, or front or back loops. It just depends on how you want it to look. To keep things flat you need to make sure your tension is not tight, or if you are skipping a space between each stitch, you need to do a chain or slip stitch. I hope this makes sense.
Excellent tutorial, so happy I found it. I am curious though, have you ever crocheted thru 2 pieces of fleece? Obviously you would have to line up your holes exactly, but I am wondering if you have ever tried this technique on 2 pieces and whether or not you recommend?
I have only used two pieces of fleece with the original method of cutting and tying the strips of fabric around edge. The organization I was making them for wanted single fleece, because double was too hot and heavy, so that is when I learned to do single blankets with crochet edges. I think it would be hard to get everything lined up to crochet 2 pieces, but you could always try on a very small piece of fabric and see what you think. Let me know! Enjoy!
Thank you. Fiskars skip stitch blade 45 mm rotary cutter for holes in fleece. Usually any fabric store that sells fleece or yarn will have it. If not, you can order online.
At the risk of sounding ignorant, I could swear you used the skip stitch blade on the long edge first, then the 2 short ends. You wouldn't be using it on the side with the fold, surely? Am totally new to this. Amazing. I have two pieces of wool, one maroon and one tealish. I want to cut them 30" sq and add crochet to create a sort of HAP.
Once you have squared all sides, you can decide which side you want to start with the skip stitch. In this video, I did one of the longer sides first, then both short sides, and then the longer side that was left. Nothing is folded and all cuts go through a single layer of fabric. If that doesn't answer question clearly, please let me know. This was done on a small piece of fabric, because when you are cutting larger pieces, it gets a little more difficult. I have a FB page called Lots of Knots Blankets and you can go through several years of examples, and that might help. It hasn't been updated in a while because we moved and my Lots of Knots group disbanded. We made 100's of these blankets for sick children in the hospital. They also make great gifts. I've made them as large as a bedspread, but the usual size is about 1 1/2 yards of fleece. You can make them smaller or larger depending on the age and size of person. There is also a website, lotsofknots.org that will show you many blankets and edgings. I have not updated that in a couple of years, but you can see what they look like. Please get back to me if you have any questions. Enjoy! They are fun to make.
@@lotsofknotsblankets6969 Oh, I see where I was confused. The jagged cut of the fabric, before you trimmed it, gave the impression that it was a folded in half piece. But you had a single layer. OK. My eyes were deceived. Mystery solved. Thanks so much for the explanation.
I’m very new to crochet. If I do the next row with a half double crochet, do I chain two to start the new row? Do I still add a single crochet between the stitches?
I am just seeing this. I would do 1 or 2 chains to start the next row. You have to "eyeball" it to see which one looks best. You can put a stitch into every stitch below it. If you want a space between stitches, then you would add a chain between your main stitches. Hope this makes sense.
Very pretty and easy to follow your video, and adding crochet to this simple easy to make blanket brings a whole new look to make them much more beautiful ! Thank you for this wonderful share … by the way I'm a new subbie, just found your channel by chance, while looking for something different to make for gifts.
Thank you for sharing this! Very helpful! Please can you let us know where to get a skip stitch rotary blade. Online option if possible as I live in South Africa!
What a great help you've been!!! I have the skip stitch blade, ruler, mat and fleece. I haven't done anything because I was unsure of how to handle such a large piece of fleece! Thank you! I am also ordering the ruler gripper - for lack of a better description!!! BTW, love your safety pins tips.
Hi! Great video. Do you have any other videos that you show different stitches and how you change color? I worry so much about my crochet coming unraveled in the wash!!
Hi Lynne. Thank you. I was and still am quite a beginner at crochet. That's one of the reasons I just do edgings and not full blankets. I usually tie some type of knot when changing color because I don't want it to come undone either. I am in the process of learning how to knit and have found some good tutorials on UA-cam. I had to watch several until I could find someone that explained and showed me in a way I could understand, but I found someone. Years ago I set up a website called lotsofknots.org with some examples of blankets and stitching instructions, but when I looked at it after not crocheting for a couple of years, it wasn't that easy to understand. At the time, I thought I was being very exacting. I haven't crocheted in quite a while and have just recently started a new blanket. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy making some beautiful blankets.
Thanks for a very detailed tutorial
You are welcome.
I found you video to be so helpful
Thank you. These blankets are so much fun and make great gifts.
Where have I been for 5 years? I just discovered this technique and you explain it perfectly - I better get busy for Christmas. Thank you !
Hi Pam, Glad you found it helpful. Enjoy making your blankets!
You’re such a good teacher I wish you would’ve continued to make more videos about how to crochet. Hope all is well.
I took a long break from crocheting and now that I have started again, there are so many UA-cam videos on various stitches that I am learning new things from them.
Most helpful tutorial on UA-cam. Many thanks. Very thorough.
Thank you. I made this several years ago and am so glad people are still learning from it. The blankets are fun to make.

At 17:15, you did 3sc in the same hole but you never made the extra ch between the sts.
Where did you get your wonderfully large cutting mat.
Thanks for your easy-to-understand video showing all the steps - I made my first blanket without any problem!
So happy to hear that the video was helpful. Congratulations on finishing your first blanket. They are lots of fun.
