I really don't like John commentating, JH spends more time explaining things to him than talking about the games. And he speaks so much!!! Please put someone else in a tournament like this one.
I think that is kind of the point. Someone more relatable to the majority of viewers, asking questions GMs and company would quickly discard so people can learn why they are bad or good moves
These commentators are super sympathetic but not really qualified to comment on chess on this Super GM level. Leko, Howes, Hess, Polgar - where are you? For chess' sake: Bring in the cavalry!

You have a superpower John lol I really liked the commentary and as someone with very little Chess experience I always enjoy the analysis and work through of the logic. It makes me want to play this game but I am just awful at Chess I don't understand it and when I sit in front of a board my brain has less substance in it then jello 🤣 but I love watching these as it reminds me of the time my parents used to play after work late at night and I sat in my high chair 🥹 My parents used to play all the time but not so much anymore but 30 years ago they played a ton!
Loving the commentary very much throughout this tournament. Even though we don't have some of the OGs, this roster is quite good. Hope to see this build into a nice mix of commentators. Would be great if u disable the engine for audience time to time, so the engine Andies would shut up about criticising commentators 😅. All the best for the rest of coverage.

Just listen to every his question toward Jovanka, he has to talked like for 5 mins with at least 10 sentences just to ask her, for example, how to play in a bad position. Every time it takes us a lot of time to hear his long speech which often ends up with nothing important. And, of course, his chess knowledge is only limited to stating that the bar is up or down or the move is orange or red. I don't know why chess24 ruins their own streams by having such a low commentator
Agree. He is an E-sport commentator and presumably is there to bring in a different audience. No good commentating chess, though. I mean, how does he get away with saying "..to my untrained eye"? However, Janushka is a star. Why she doesnt barf whenever Sargent opens his mouth is amazing! :)

To all advertisers, I will not watch when John Sargent (1800 rated) is commentating. Most fans agree with me. View count is deceptive because we watch for 2 minutes, see that Sargent is there, and leave the stream.
@wkjacobs3893 are you illiterate? Let me break it down for you. Advertisers do NOT want people to watch for 2 minutes triggering the view counter, and leaving the stream quickly. Advertisers, to the contrary, want viewers to spend 3-4 hours watching the stream so that THE ADS ACTUALLY REACH THE VIEWERS. Stop propping up the trash decisions by a trash management of a trash company, and start speaking for real chess fans.
To be fair, I don't believe that being 1800 rated is the problem. There are excellent spot journalist that have never been athletes, and I believe the same is true for chess. There could excellent hosts who, instead of providing analysis, are very informed on everything outside the board and ask the right questions to those who can provide analysis. Mr Sargent does not understand this role and instead poorly imitates the analysis of the chess professionals.

If you don’t want to do a handshake with an opponent because they are women, then just don’t play the game against them. This needs to be talked about more. It is utterly disgusting
