ABRP is likely planning on that 10-80% charging cycle. Nothing says you can't roll into a charger with "gas in the tank" when you have a car that charges so well with a FAST flat charge rate. If you have gas in the tank that is just that much less time you have to stay at the charger. Only the last leg to the finish do you need to time it down to the minute/kwh to make sure you didn't have any more than you needed. Stay on the hook at the charger and you can go faster and shouldn't need to limp on the legs. The charger hopping gaming the brief charging curve spike works for poorer charging cars like the Tesla. The eGMP fast flat charging rate to 80% is your main weapon. My Tesla only dreams of charging that good for so long and that deep into the pack.
Also if you use the built in navigation then preconditioning can cool or heat the battery as needed. Precondition and cool that battery since you guys were toasty on a couple of those stops. Don't use the nav until you need the car to start preconditioning and then go to built in nav to that next charging stop you already know, then just go back to carplay or whatever you were using as soon as you are getting your charge. I know you were using other tools to navigate, but the precondition function possibly could have helped you.
ABRP shows that the Ioniq 6 is actually faster than the M3 and the OOS 10% challenge shows that the I6 is actually better than the M3 in the road trip scenario in packing on the electrons much faster. The I6 is no slouch at this road trip thing. How many miles did you guys end up driving and how did that compare to the miles the M3 team drove?
On paper and in the OOS 10% challenges the ranking and finishing order looked like it should have been Taycan, Lucid, Ioniq, M3. The mistakes by the Lucid team sunk them. They limped too many legs before the dead on the road thing happened. I think the I6 legit can beat the M3. The M3 advantage is the charging network and proximity to the highway along with it's efficiency, but the M3 just doesn't charge very well. I would like to see the M3 and I6 rematch. I knew the Taycan was going to win, but I was pulling for the Ioniq 6 underdog to upset the apple cart.
Congrats to the Ioniq 6 team. You guys had to work a lot harder for it than many of the other teams because of the poor built in software and infrastructure challenges. You earned your podium finish.

Hey!! I’ve been telling people this thing is a road trip beast for months over on Corbin’s channel!! But, nobody listens to me. 😁 and/or 🙁. All kidding aside, this is a great report. Thanks to all who made this possible and participated.

What I wish you guys would do next is convince Hyundai to add long range RWD versions of the SEL and Limited trims that also get 360+ miles. My only complaint with my car is some the features missing in the SE trim.

Watching the original series, I thought team Ioniq maximized thier charging stops. The high charge rate of the tycan and efficiency of the 3 gave them a leg up. Team Ionic made the best of thier circumstances.

A trip like that would normally have two overnight hotel stays and, with hotel charging, the race would have been much closer between the cars, including the gas car.

Yes, I completed an Ioniq 6 multi day road trip, and overnight stops do even out a lot of the hard driving performance differences that a coast to coast contest reveals. I covered 600-700 miles per day, and was a little tired at the end of each day, usually because of the fatigue of the wind and sunlight exposure throughout that day, and the car held up very well.
I think mainly this contest revealed that for most people, electric sedans are not a problem to road trip in now. I think the top 3 cars like the Ioniq 6 and the Model 3 and obviously the Taycan are head and shoulders above the rest, and I could feel that on the road, having the range and efficiency to just quickly skip a bad set of charging stations. I had options!

Regarding your ‘charge speed dips’ when the EQS connected: one guess could be that the 800v (in the Hyundai) versus 400v (in the EQS and the EA stations) somehow causes the Hyundai to have to ‘switch gears’ in the charging circuits… should be easy to test unless thermal is somehow part of the picture as well…

You might have something there. The output voltage likely dropped for the EQS pack voltage. And the Ioniq I think has a boost inverter, limited to ~98kw, for when connected to Tesla chargers.

Chevy Bolts were under $30,000 before incentives. Lots of low mileage EVs available for under $25,000. They do not all cost $60,000 or $50,000 or $40,000.

Why do people buy electric cars from gas automotive manufacturers? Just buy a Tesla, those crappy Hyundai's will NEVER SELF DRIVE which will be all the rage next year.
Not to mention all the serious recalls on the Hyundai's and if you ever need an out of warranty battery replacement Hyundai charges OVER $50,000!

@@akennedystocks Cars are designed to only last a little more than the warranty. It's called "planned obsolescence." All cars have problems eventually. I've been driving cars for 30 years now. I'm okay dealing with problems. EV won't have an engine seizure. Duh? And ICE and hybrids are 25-60 TIMES more likely to catch fire than an EV. I'm not worried.
