    The relationship between Sam and Frodo was based on the friendship's Tolkien had experienced and seen during the First World War between soldiers serving with one another - a unbelievably close camaraderie and willingness to die for one another, a love closer than siblings but also not sexual. And for anyone who thought Tolkien intended to hint otherwise I'd point to the fact that Sam's interest in Rosie Cotton is established from the outset and maintained to the end of the books.

      D. Ryan Webb Correct. Tolkien intended for The Lord of the Rings to be published as one book, although it is actually divided into six parts called books, so it could be considered a hexalogy. Or because it was intended to be one volume of a two volume collection with The Silmarillion, it could be considered half of a duology.

      Literally though. Before LoTR and them winning so many Academy’s, Hollywood looked down on the genre as most fantasy/adventure films were seen as comical and childish and never thought that such a category would ever be seen in the red carpet…and then LOTR was out. There’s good reason why so many people back then said those 3 movies were a HUGE gamble at the time. So much effort and time for a fantasy series that everyone has looking down on at first. The score and production alone was enough to win awards…

    As I've gotten older and suffered greater losses and celebrated higher achievements, my appreciation for the concepts that these movies explore has gotten deeper and deeper. The depth of friendship and the value of companionship between Frodo and Sam, the sacrifice and loss of what the others considered a person of immense power and wisdom in Gandalf, and the acceptance of of Boromir's flaws in himself as a reflection of his esteem for Aragorn, and all the other small but so important moments shared among these characters are priceless examples of how great we could be if we only had the courage to try. It feels like Brett and Scheller paid more attention to how current events relate to these films, rather than how these films relate to individuals committed to a common goal. Not saying any of it wrong, but in my opinion, it is deeper than that.

    • @gregorydamario7977
      @gregorydamario7977 Рік тому +7

      You have to consider that Brett and Scheller are still children. They obviously have little to no experience or context for the grueling effort, the incredible danger, the potential for being horribly murdered by real monsters and the trust and comradery that can develop under those circumstances in what is essentially a military, small unit infiltration operation. I am sorely annoyed at the little girl who laughed at Boromir's death. But like I implied and said, immature children with no context as to what they are watching.

    • @mortalatlas9501
      @mortalatlas9501 Рік тому +5

      I think the two of us hold similar opinions on the movies and concepts, but I don't think that Brett and Scheller could be classified as children. I think a more accurate way to say it is that they haven't truly considered what it would be like to commit yourself to a set of principles so deeply that living by them is the only way you *can* live. I'm sure there is someone in their lives they could spend time with in order to have a living embodiment of what we're talking about as an example. Brett is young and full of passion, but it seems that she hasn't been tempered by suffering yet. Scheller on the other hand openly admitted that he might shed a tear during ROTK, but not so much here. He knows what happens, so he's kind of glossing over what the characters are experiencing in their own real time like it's less meaningful because it works out in the resolution of the 3rd movie. His stoicism dampens his compassion.

His experience in the first world war really shaped the stories especially his four best friends and the loss of two of them in the war. The Lord of the Rings is Tolkien's Magnum Opus, unparalleled by anyone to this day, of course drawing some inspiration from Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen and his wife's love of Wagner. Buried together in the verdant cemetery of Wolvercote in Northern Oxford, Beren and his Luthien. I think that I understand that the "jokes" help make light of an emotional response.

    I was listening to a podcast recently that touched on the fact that many people these days assume that any close friends of the same gender must be gay for each other. Our society has lost the concept of platonic love. We are so saturated with sexual content and sexual identities that we have begun to automatically read sexual attraction into everything. We don't know how to have intimate friendships anymore. Friendships where we have real, deep conversations. Where we are willing to share our hopes, dreams, fears, and failures. Where we rely on each other and truly love each other like brothers and sisters.
    Maybe the close friendships that men like Tolkien used to have are the reason that the world survived before therapists. Before everything was online, before we were so preoccupied with the image that we present through our social media profiles...maybe it was easier to trust and open up to someone you weren't paying to be non-judgemental.
    Just some thoughts.

      This almost pathological need to see sexual connotations or meanings, where there's absolutely none to be found other than a very close relationship, is our era's blight. To be fair though, I watched other reactions to the trilogy from a similarly young audience and they never went there.
      My main gripe with her "reaction" was more her being constantly looking at her smartphone, demonstrating a very short attention span and missing crucial content. Then complaining about the lack of exposition, and having a puddle deep review of the movie.

Let's just say the fact that she gives him three proves that she has more respect for him and that he's a better person than the greatest elf to have ever lived. Like it's some super deep significance and that scene was really cut from the theatrical because only Lord of the Rings fans would understand it. @@cernunnos8344 Fëanor, a High-Elf Lord in the First Age (over 7000 years before the events in LOTR) is believed to have seen the way Galadriel's hair shined and got the idea for the Silmarils (jewels that would be sources of light and beauty and control of which would define the First Age). Fëanor admired her hair so much that he requested a tress from Galadriel on three different occassions, but she refused each time and would not give him even a single strand.
      However, when Gimli asked for it (when strictly asked his desire, not what he wanted her to gift him) and did so not based in its material value and not from a sense of simple admiration of the hair, but of its representation of Galadriel's persona, Galadriel gave him three times what he asked for. This three is an exact counterpoint to Fëanor's thrice-made request. A secondary point here is that by the end of the Third Age, when LOTR takes place, there had been a longstanding enmity between Elves and Dwarves. Gimli's father Glóin, in particular, had been imprisoned by the Woodland Elf-King Thranduil and Gimli grew up with those kinds of grudges. Therefore, when Gimli made clear that he admired Galadriel's character and that he could find the highest beauty among the Elves, Galadriel saw it as a small chink in that armor of prejudice and wanted, as a gift before she went out of Middle-Earth, to help break down that needless animosity.

    Well, just a warning to viewers, Brett didn't respect LOTRs throughout the whole movie trilogy. Didn't listen to her subs about their issues regarding her behavior and the whole phone controversy in the Two Towers. Hope this saves your time watching one of the worst reaction series on UA-cam.

    Just rewatched the entire trilogy recently,and it’s amazing how it still holds up against a lot of recent movies,and the CGI and special effects are still as good or even better than recent movies.

    IMO the theatrical versions should be watched for first timers, as it replicates the same emotions that everyone experienced at that time. The extended versions are also good, but to me it’s more of a fan service to people who already love the originals.

      @Opener73 Still, most scenes cut from the theatrical release actually feel poorly done and it seems justified that they were cut out. But even if extended editions are amazing, the theatrical release is what people should watch first because that's the movie most people watch.

      @Opener73 Nah, agree to disagree there, I prefer judging movies on the theatrical version, not the version where they can go wild with the runtime to show everything. But I would also say that in some cases the producers or production company force directors to ruin a movie by demanding short runtimes and changes that they think will be nice but aren't, and in that case I'd make an exception. Like Justice League's Snyder cut.

      The extended editions ruin the pacing, especially in Two Towers (where the climax is totally destroyed), and the director Peter Jackson very clearly said the preferred version is the theatrical release.
      There is no greater problem (for movies) than the fact these extended editions exist and therefore we rarely see the real versions when they are rereleased in theaters.
      More content doesn't mean better. A movie has pacing, a movie has a narrative. Those things were carefully crafted in the originals and it's why the movie won so many Oscars. The extended editions would not have won Oscars.
      Enjoy them on your own time as fun extras, but they aren't the "right" way to watch the movie.

    • @joshlytle9311
      @joshlytle9311 Рік тому +1

      @Opener73it's not nonsense. Both scenes break up the pacing of the film and introduce concepts that aren't needed, which is why they were edited out. Also, you're focusing on a couple minor thing vs the glaring stuff that ruins the movie, like the totally changed ending of Two Towers.
      The "right" way to watch a movie is as the director intended, usually, and when there's ambiguity it's the one that has clearly stood the test of time and awards.
      The extended editions have not. There's a reason people like Brett would get more bored watching them, and because they are more "boring" with all the extra fluff and ruined pacing.

    Deeper lore version for you: Galadriel's gift to Gimli has deeper meaning behind it, like most things in this movie & reflects the expanded lore of the middle earth universe. Galadriel is one of the 2-3 most powerful & wise elves remaining in Middle Earth since the time the land was young. She was born in a place called Valinor, or the Undying land... which is basically the place of residence of the Valar, the local pantheon, the local "gods" as you may call them. Back then, the world was not illuminated by the sun, the moon and the stars, but rather by 2 trees of gold and silver, Telperion and Laurëlin that lit the world before the sun & moon were born from their last flower and fruit as they were basically killed by Melkor. It is said that Galadriel's hair had somehow captured some of the shine of those two trees. Her uncle Fëanor, who was a great king of the Elven people & also arguably their greatest craftsman to ever live, asked/demanded that she give him a lock of hair, so that he could use it to fashion 3 gems that would shine of the same light as the trees. Sensing his pride & a shadow that wasn’t exactly belonging to him brewing from within, she refused his request 3 times. He stopped asking and made the gems anyway, managing to complete the task he had set for himself even without her hair. Around these 3 gems, the possession of which became the driving force for many of the great events in the world, entire wars that lasted for centuries exploded, & other events. The gems actively shaped the fate of the races of middle earth to the point that the aforementioned Valar got involved directly. During these times, events surrounding the gems brought about the traditional enmity between Dwarves and Elves... the same enmity that Gimli still feels towards them. That enmity however does not survive his encounter with the wise Galadriel, whom Gimli basically falls platonically in love with. By giving him 3 of her hair, Galadriel is opening a door, offering an olive branch that might one day close the gap that divides these two races. Legolas, himself being an Elven prince and centuries old, knows of the story through his father Thranduil & grandfather Oropher, as it shaped the lives of all Elves, and his subtle smile is possibly the first act of acknowledgment and reconciliation. it is also a way for Peter Jackson, the director of the film, to give a nod to all of the fans who know these facts and backstories... a way to make us feel seen, and to make us appreciate just how deeply the makers of the film respect the books and larger universe created by Tolkien.
    The thing with the hair may seem weird, but there is a significance to it in real life as well as in the lore of the story. In real life, it was not uncommon for wives, fiancés, or even girlfriends to give their men (who were going off to war), a lock of their hair as a keepsake, particularly in WWI, which Tolkien fought in. The lore part of it comes into play in The Silmarillion, Tolkien's tales of the creation of Arda, the Undying Lands of Valinor, and Middle Earth. Galadriel is many, many thousands of years old, & was born in Valinor before the sun & moon were even created. At the time, the world was lit by two trees, one gold and one silver which would shine at different times from each other, but would shine together once a day when one would fade and the other brighten. Galadriel's hair was said to look like the light of the mingled light from the two trees, which may have inspired Feanor, a master craftsman and heir to the high king of the Noldor, to craft the Silmaril's which were three jewels that captured the light of the two trees, one golden light, one silver light, & one co-mingled light. Fëanor had a bit of a thing for Galadriel and begged her for her hair three different times, which she rejected because she could perceive the inner darkness of his heart and rejected him, which made them "un-friends" after that. There is a lot more to the lore than that, so this is the super crib-notes version. But the point is, it was VERY significant that she granted Gimli three of her hairs to a dwarf, when she would not to the son of her king many 10s of thousands of years ago of which she is related to all three kings who were brothers and Elu Thingol of Doriath was one of the brothers that didn’t stay in Valinor even though he was one of the elven ambassadors along with his three brothers and that king I mentioned was VERY close friends with Thingol)
    ever wondered how old Galadriel is during the War of the Ring? I have looked in many different sources and depending on where you look, she’s anywhere from 17,000-20,000 years old. 6,000 seems too young as it would make her close in age to Elrond, who I know is much younger than her even though he’s 6000-8000 by the third age, which wouldn’t make sense for her at all even if she was (“690 years older” as some kept repeating on the internet making 6960!)As she was around long before Elrond was even born and time was experience differently to say the LEAST as there is a lot to go into on that subject lol.) She was born during the Years of the Trees & back then the years were something like 9X longer than a solar year so I understand the math is hard, especially since she isn’t given an exact birth year. But it is said that Finarfin, her father, was born in Y.T. 1230, so I would assume she was born sometime within 1000 years of then (being generous).
    Basically, I’m wondering what the most accurate range is for her age during the events of Lord of the Rings. I’ll also add that Galadriel is was around before the ents even existed (of which Treebeard is 15,000 years old so she’s OLDER than Treebeard/Fangorn) or very close to when they were “created” by Yavannah and probably had much knowledge to do with such things and or direct knowledge of what happened. Probably through an early prototype of her mirror or simply another dream that made her long for middle earth all over again ontop of the yearning she already had to go there and explore. Nothing to do with Fëanor’s oath and all that jazz.
    Just going from the Appendices (and maybe Silmarillion) she would have to be at least 9000+ years older than Elrond, Elrond was born near the end of the First Age, Galadriel was adult before the destruction of the Trees.
    Actually, more than that: I just checked, and the Second Age ended in SA 3441. So an elf born literally at the end of the First Age (FA 590) is 3441+3018 = 6459 years old when Frodo leaves for Rivendell. Elrond was born in FA 532, so adds 58 years to get 6517. Elves are mature at 100, so Galadriel adds at leas 632 to Elrond's age, to be at least 7149, and possibly quite a bit more (as attested by other comments.)
    One fic had Maglor(Elrond’s Adoptive Father, Maedhros was also adoptive father alongside Maglor, they were the eldest sons of Fëanor) - One fic had as much older than Galadriel; I wondered how we knew, and it was pointed out to me that Maglor was the second oldest son of the first son of Finwë, while Galadriel is the youngest child of the third son of Finwë. So, yeah.
    Note that the second age was the LONGEST and again time was experienced very differently back then too aside from the internal clock of elves working very differently, she’s definitely older as far as the world and the other beings that age far faster around her.
    I also remind you all that she’s older than the sun and the moon and witnessed and most likely even helped in the Valar’s crafting of the last fruit and flower of the two trees of Valinor. She was the most involved with learning everything possible from them.
    She’s 25th generation from Tata one of the elven forefathers to wake to the stars. Their birth was rather shrouded in mist. Only those of her grandfathers ilk have a chance of knowing the origins a bit better as they are closer to that culture that stemmed from the beginning.
    The Years of the Trees were the second of the three great time periods in Arda that followed the Years of the Lamps and preceded the Years of the Sun&Moon. They were known to be comprised of several Ages and lasted in total around 1500 Valian Years or 14,373 solar years.
    Time flowed differently back then and time flowed differently within them too for the elves live as long as the world does. Epic hey?❤❤
    The Dúnedain said that Galadriel’s height was two rangar, or "man-high" - some 6 feet 4 inches (193 cm). However, Galadriel's most striking feature was her beautiful long silver-golden hair. The Elves of Tirion said it captured the radiance of the Two Trees Laurelin and Telperion themselves. Galadriel was said to be the tallest female in Middle Earth, at 6'4”. But then Thingol was the tallest elf ever to live, and he's estimated to be almost 9' (274 cm)
    Thingol was also a very very prominent figure within the Silmarillion and other books. He’s the great ancestor of Elrond+Arwen and through Aragorn being directly but distantly related to Elronds Twin Brother Elros it makes him loosely connected to Thingol as well. Let’s just say he died a tragic death long long ago. I’m a continent that doesn’t exist anymore. The events I spoke of in my earlier story of Elrond about his fathers deeds, which lead to the Valar helping with putting a Stop to Morgoth for good so to say and that War Of Wrath lasted 80 years straight and it left the landmass torn asunder from the clash of gods and the holy host of Vanyar elves that were closest to the Valar than all other elves so you can imagine what a bunch of mighty elves men and Maiar fighting a bunch of fowl creatures and beings for 80 years would do to a continent. It all fell into the sea. Galadriel barely made it over the mountain before that part of the story officially broke out.

We have a rule at home, where if we are watching a movie, everyone puts their phones down in the tv stand, that way everyone is enjoying the movie together. Especially if it’s somebody’s favorite movie, out of respect. It almost seems impossible nowadays to convince the youth to put the phones away for couple hours.

      The odd thing is, she's probably read/watched far more classics than the average person, but the classics she was raised on are from the actual CLASSICAL PERIOD. She's read a bunch of Shakespeare, Dickens, Campell, you know, the "old stuff". Her education has been thorough, just not current. It is a somewhat tragic tendency of conservatives to retreat completely into the past when the present is vile to their sensibilities (which is almost always.) This is part of how we lost the culture and are now obligated to crawl our way back into it.
