    We actually recorded this episode ready to release next week while intending to do a live episode today because Fringy will be gone for two weeks but as it happens... we realised that you guys would probably wanna see The Acolyte coverage now, instead of in a week. So, we will be recording next week's episode while this is premiering to release that while he's gone next week! hope that all makes sense and... Enjoy!

    Social change is NOT only made through starting political movements. Social change both bad and good can be made through inventing technology or writing entertainment among other ways. If I invent a fusion reactor and thus I make it so that the US never needs to depend on oil again, am I not causing social change when the Middle East's main export stops being valuable?

    • @mrshmuga9
      @mrshmuga9 10 місяців тому +1

      That’s because these types of people think handing power over to a governing body/entity is the only way to solve problems. They also put so much emphasis on “political movements” because all they want to do is virtue-signal. Yell at people or protest in the streets, and it ends there. They don’t donate their time to help the people they purport to care about or anything else tangible and even have immediate benefits, because it requires more than complaining. Protesting can be useful, but if you’re berating people so vociferously because of your righteous indignation, you should be doing more actions than just blabbing. The whole “Texas sends migrants to L.A. sanctuary cities” is one example. Whines that “nobody” is helping, and then complains when they’re held to their word. Wasn’t a clean cut situation, but you get the point. They’re just complaining and hoping “someone else” will solve the problem so they can say/feel like they’re useful, and take credit for other people actually helping.

    When I was at uni, 20 years ago, I was in a program that required I take a certain amount of extra classes from different departments, and the choice was basically only limited by availability. Since my own department had really harsh requirements, I took the handful of classes that were useful to me, and filled the rest with a bunch of Humanities stuff (ex. "Porn" "Deconstructing Fairy Tales" "Queer Theory"), because they were very easy.
    The reason they were easy, once you got the hang of it, was that they started from a conclusion and then worked their way back, so I got to grab a bit of pop culture I enjoyed, and then fit bits of it into the mold of the expected premise, using references to seminal post-modern and/or X-Theory papers to support that foregone conclusion. It was actually a fun, relaxing game. Then I had to go back to my actual studies where whatever theory or hypothesis we were working with had to be tested against reality, and if the predictions were wrong, either the theory or the method had to be reworked, because evidence trumped theory.
    I didn't imagine back then that the types of fun, unserious stuff I learned in those extra classes would ever escape the confines of academia, because, like many, I assumed it would just bump into reality and shatter.
    So I was wrong.
    Too many people went to uni and were only ever exposed to that kind of thinking, with no grounding in anything more solid, and some of them, turns out, became video essayists. And so whatever they want to claim about something reminds them of Marx, or whoever they choose to use, who said something that could be marginally applicable to what they want to say, if looked at from a certain point of view, and geeks and nerds have to deal with this half-assed cherry picking thinking, because they don't care about the thing they're using to make their point, they just care about validating their world view.

      Oh, if only they had stopped with video essayists, this crap has infected politics and society as a whole. Just reframe Humanities as Social "Sciences" and you command the authority of a Science, then add the mantle of "Representation" and claim to speak for the oppressed "minorities" and suddenly you command a powerful lobby that can fabricate any new rules as they see sit. They can literally change law application without changing laws themselves or even going through a vote, by redefining the words used in said laws.

    "But all we see Tony Stark do is build high-tech weaponry"
    So you're telling me the person whose job was to design weapons before becoming a superhero... is trying to improve the world by designing weapons? And his problem is that he isn't lobbying for political candidates or running for office? Isn't it more meaningful to show someone using the skills they were given to try and make the world better? Isn't it also hypocritical to say that if you yourself are making a video essay (something you think you are good at) instead of protesting and running for office?

    • @84C4
      @84C4 9 місяців тому

      It's also a lie, he doesn't just do weaponry. In fact he actively avoids sharing his weapons because of his war merchant background and seeing how people abused it. That's why he goes into building clean energy and other non-weapon tech. He even has the social programs this guy claims he doesn't have, like the Stark scholarship programs.

      It's a problem with the people themselves, not the concept.
      KOTOR 2 is an example of how this idea should work: The lead writer admitted he really didn't like Star Wars and the Force going in, but gained a much better appreciation of them while in the process of making the game. That's how we got so much fantastic writing that deconstructs the Jedi, the Sith, and the Force as a whole. It wasn't about the writer hating Star Wars, it was that he was very skilled and willing to actually engage with the thing he was so critical of, in order to write the best story he could.
      But we don't get more of *that* because practically everything these days is managed and written by a bunch of brain-rotted children with delusions of intelligence, wisdom, and apparently empathy too. It's not just limited to this one idea, another example is all of the "subverted expectations" shit like, GOT S8, Terminator: Dark Fate, and everything written by Rian Johnson.
      And it's not like we don't get things that are good (or even great) anymore, they're just overshadowed by the sheer quantity of truly awful garbage being pumped out. We've gotten stuff like GoW 2018 + Ragnarok, Arcane, Andor, and plenty of others that EFAP has covered, just off the top of my head.
      Bad creators make bad products, good creators make good products; it's as simple as that.

      The only problem with the synthetic crystals thing is that Darth Vader uses a red blade, but The Empire would have access to the mines right?
      Otherwise, it makes a lot more sense that Sith always use the same color because of the artificial nature. It's also thematic because they took the shortcut and just made a crystal instead of patiently prospecting and mining.
      Whereas the Disney thing of cooking them with dark side marinade makes no sense, because meditating calmly for a long time is something Jedi would do and because all the crystals would end up being various shades of red.

    Could have whole scenes of Qui-Gon talking about his own regrets with Dooku, Clone Wars characters Obiwan let die haunting him, Vader can Vader, and oscar-worthy acting from Ewan McGregor, all while doing zero damage to the OT timeline.

    36:00, KOTOR with HK-47 does it fantastically with an entire dialogue discussing different methods and with many cautions that make perfect sense based on the powers they have. If future projects took that as inspiration they would do so much better with this. You don't go to melee combat, you don't use blasters you try with traps or mines, you can try poisons but they aren't the best and just weaken them, over planning is deadly since they can sense it, etc. etc. It's absolute gold for any media that wants to portray people trying to actually kill Jedi.

    "The social, political & economic structures under which we all live"
    "For most societies today those structures include...militarized nation states, neo-liberal governments, privatized industry..."
    This may be borderline true, when only looking at successful societies and ignoring all nuance. Of course, there's a whole bunch of totalitarian, theocratic, communistic, oligarchic and/or dictatorial countries, with billions of humans living in them, in which industries are often nationalized and there certainly isn't a free market.
    Countries do tend to have militaries, that much is true, but "nation states" depends on your definition of nation, because there's plenty of countries whose citizens aren't or don't consider themselves as part of other nations they share the country with, which is often where wars happen, or worse.
    And this is just touching on where he's poisoning the well regarding the real world. Marvel's universe also has several fictional countries that don't fit that mold, and the MCU in particular has a crazy person who's been murdering anyone who didn't follow his plans, and everyone inside all the parallel universes where anyone didn't follow his plan, so that's also a thing. Can't say he's not preserving the status quo with extreme prejudice, but he's a villain, so I guess it doesn't count.

  • @somethingguy912
    @somethingguy912 10 місяців тому +10

    Something that I've noticed about video essays like John MaCintosh is that they always criticize the very PRINCIPLE of there being a 'status quo' rather than the systems of which a status quo allots. Which sort of ties into two paradoxes, one about the state of being a Progressive and the existence of a Status Quo;
    The Paradox of Progressivism is that change for it's own sake is always good, no matter what that change may be. That something that is built inherently into our system must be flawed because the act of conserving, or conservatism for that matter, is stagnant. Of course the issue with that is that certain things being the way that they are is for a reason, and that it is isn't stagnant that, for say, our wanting to have clean water, heating, and shelter is some kind of conservative slant. The other problem with this paradox is that it is a way for Progressive to self perpetuate their own existence, as once something has changed to the point of perfection, they would be unnecessary. So in a sense, for a progressive to remain as one they have to champion a state of perpetual torment that which they will always forever climb upwards on, no less different from the tale of Sisyphus.
    As for the paradox of the Status Quo, it is simply that anything that is normalized or codified in our society will become the status quo. Notions of communism and socialism as normal frameworks in our society would inevitably make themselves part of the status quo, which by the logic of 'status quo is bad because status quo', means that in essence, NOTHING can be made sacrosanct if one is to believe that 'preserving' the state of things is inherently bad. This ties into the Paradox of Progressivism that they get themselves into a point of inventing problems that they can create makeshift solutions to, IE BullyHunters as one; treating online harassment as a ongoing, untreated epidemic while ignoring the very tools we take for granted and offering a frankly convoluted and unhelpful workaround is baked into the very belief that the status quo of things was bad and that this measure would 'improve' it somewhat, while ignoring that IF it was made to be that that in of itself would become the status quo.
    I think it's with these two very concepts is why modern internet society is so borked, that you have literal walking contradictions that talk out of both sides of their ass about social values yet either do nothing to enact them or regress even further beyond the issues they've espoused. Hasan Piker, Idubbbz, Jim Sterling to name a few; perpetually spinning wagons on progressive issues while tacitly doing nothing to make them into a reality, because if they were ever to see the light would be seen for the drivel they are. And also that with their hatred of the status quo in mind, that they know full well their dreams can't be realized because those dreams WOULD become the status quo. Is it any wonder then, that these people carry themselves with such hatred, such defeatism, such vitriol in the way they behave?

    One thing that drives me crazy in pop culture critiques are these meta narrative criticisms that take the consequences of the media and act like that should be accounted for within the narrative itself. The most common one you see is the criticisms of Batman and how he is ineffective in preventing crime in Gotham. The evidence for this (constant escape out of Arkham, etc.) is a consequence of the serial nature of the media. It seems like there's always a supervillain because that's how Batman adventures are. Sadly, this sort of nonsense has even seeped into the writing itself, like we saw in Injustice League.

    Funny thing about the Blip, have you noticed that none of the new characters introduced since Infinity War have been affected by it? The blip has not be incorporated into anyone's backstory. Non of the new people we've met have either been dusted or had anyone close to them get dusted, or if they did, it didn't impact them enough to warrant a mention. The exceptions are Yelena and Monica, and in both cases they were dusted just so they could return to find their relative dead. You don't actually need the blip to set those up. I guess the flag-smashers were also affected by it, although their motivation only makes sense if they and everyone they care about was spared. The Blip should have interrupted everyone's lives, but it feels like it only impacted the Avengers and their friends.
