Today is Jack Ashford's 90th birthday. He is last surviving member of the Funk Brothers. I love how he takes charge of the proceedings. It's one thing to play the tambourine. It's another to know how to play the tambourine. Jack Ashford knows how to play the tambourine.
Magic absolute magic! Notice that Jack Ashford's tabourine was played in a different way in the demonstration and in the performance but the song but the magic of the song was still there. That's magic! Same song! One does what is necessary to make the song work, like breathing, we breathe in different ways but the life is the same ... until it isn't. Bloody marvellous!
The analogy to soul food though is very apparent in soul music, you've got an auditory gumbo being made and when the tambourine comes in, well that's the secret seasonings sprinkled in generously that make it all pop.
I don't know who the backup singers and horn players are, but I know that Ray Monette is fulfilling the role for Robert White on guitar and that Trenita Womack is fulfilling the role for Eddie "Bongo" Brown on percussion. The rest of the musicians, Jack Ashford on tambourine, Uriel Jones and Richard "Pistol" Allen on drums, Bob Babbitt on bass, Joe Messina and Eddie Willis on guitar, Johnny Griffith on acoustic piano and Joe Hunter on electric piano. Shortly after the documentary was filmed (but before it was released) Richard "Pistol" Allen and Johnny Griffith died (I forget what Allen's cause of death was, but I know that Griffith died of a heart attack). The Funk Brothers then toured, replacing Richard "Pistol" Allen with Kenneth "Spider Webb" Rice, and recruiting Robert Jones to replace Johnny Griffith.
Kevin, I was told or read somewhere that Allen had cancer during the production of SITSOM. I presume that was caused his passing. The joy he expressed during fiming was beautiful and catching!!

Yeah! That was the final piece of the magical ingredient and the star was born and it flew across the sky. Magic!
Ben Harper always was a great vocalist. This piece is fabulous ___ the music will never die. The FUNK lives
