When it comes to Maynards Mother, she had an Aneurysm then left her entire body paralyzed only on one side. She was a woman of God, and Maynards Father wasn't around (in war). Maynard, not being as open to religion at the time, was angry for his mother putting all her faith in God when in his mind "he did this to you". Around the same time, rumors were spreading around the church/hospital (I forget what about) and the lyrics in Wings 2 that says "Feigning all the trial and tribulations none of us have been there, not like you." Are about that. At the start of this, in his second band A Perfect Circle wrote a song called Judeth about his anger why she was being so faithful to this God that did this to her. Wings for Marie 1 and 2 is after the 20 something years she was paralyzed. About 10,000 days in total. At this point she has passed away. These 2 songs are about Maynards understanding of her side, and the acceptance he went through. Putting aside his distaste for God and his bais, hence the passage "set in my ways in my arrogance... etc." These 3 songs are known as the Maynards Mom Trilogy (Judeth, Wings for Marie, 10,000 Days)
10,000 Days in the fire is long enough, your going home. - Maynard.

The first half of this album is some of their best work, I think the wings from marie instrumental criticism is honestly fair but Maynards vocal performance absolutely picks up that slack. I feel like you hear his voice in its strongest form there, he's very upfront, and probably the most raw lyrically we'll ever hear him be. The second half of the record is very desolate, which isn't all bad, but way too unfocused to feel strongly about.

I wish I was there for the stream, but regardless, I'm glad to see you had some enjoyment. This is probably the album to really solidify me into being a TOOL fan. I went in order of their discography and Jambi really stuck out and made me really want to come back for more. This one used to be my most favorite until I went on relistening to the discography and it went down to #3, but honestly still a great one imo. I do agree with your gripes where the tediousness felt like it could've been used to make more songs or put focus into other sections of songs, but overall they just reside in the interludes (except Intension which sorta grew on me, but isn't on my playlist).
(I'll be discussing their most recent album so if you are intending on going in blind, just ignore the rest of this.) I will say that Fear Inoculum might be a difficult album for you next because a lot of that tedium in "10,000 Days" kinda forms that album (seriously, look at the freakin song lengths). But after a second listen, it's become my 2nd most favorite album while also having my most favorite song from TOOL on there. But I think me and many others would understand why you wouldn't like it; it's probably their most divisive album yet. I think seeing it more through the lends of an art project rather than a music album puts it into a perspective, but that being said, I can see the criticism of it defeating the purpose of it being an album.

Not sure if it's been mentioned in the comments anywhere yet, but something interesting about the album cover for this- it had this flap with lenses attached to the front of it that you could look through to distort the album more. I have the album buried somewhere in a box full of cd cases so I'm kinda just remembering this off the top of my head. Unfortunately that flap with the lenses made it a massive pain in the ass to store with other CD cases because it made it uneven(the lenses were thick glass fish-eye lenses, probably about half an inch in thickness) and uneven things don't really stack well when everything else is a flat square/rectangle. Regardless, it was a neat little idea I guess and I just thought it was funny how Brad kept coming back to the album art without having that little piece of information.

Vicarious is one of the best progressive metal songs ever written. It was inevitable that Jambi would be a bit of a let down. The curse of success as it were.

This album is absolutely fantastic, and I love pretty much every song besides some interludes. I have almost every song in some kind of Tool playlist. They just all jump between all the extremes. Where Ænima and Lateralus are albums I can listen to from start to finish, this one needs to be fitted into similar sounding/themed playlists for specific moods.

Tool is quite different from other of the contemporary prog metal acts due to its theme work aren't as direct or cohesive as Dream Theater or even Opeth did. DT fought for the ideal of making complex notes in a single song, Tool opened up spaces into their psychedelic work to make the music seems more open and less catatrophic but a bit angrier and just harsher. 10,000 Days is their Kid A cuz of its atmospheric texture

I think once you listen to all of Tools catalog, you appreciate songs like Intention, Lost Keys (and even Veginti Tres) I love when tool gets atmospheric and there are not a lot of tool songs that are calm the entire way through and don't build up, or hit you with something in the middle like Wings Part 1. I PERSONALLY think Brad got caught up in the heavy hitters that when the calm, spacious tracks that are supposed to provide a break, he was just itching to get back to the heavy stuff. I not only never Skip Intention, but it's one of my favorites from them and I revisit it a lot. Tool has a lot of heavy songs. And songs that go back and forth, but not a lot of calm spacious cuts.

I always looked at Rosetta Stoned as like a parody of TOOL fans and how they view TOOL. Maynard has talked a lot about using humour in his songs that TOOL fans never noticed because they talk about the "deep" and "profound" stuff. So this song is about the deep philosophies of alien life, chosen ones and determinism, told through the comedic lens of a fucking drop kick stoner who can only communicate these ideas through pop culture references and doesn't understand why others can't grasp his "intellect" or "deep understanding" from his experience. It's basically how the stereotypical TOOL from the memes would talk about Lateralus using the Fibonacci sequence

First listens to Rosetta Stoned left me feeling kind of annoyed that I couldn't understand the lyrics, and could never settle into a riff or groove as it kept switching up without a continuation of theme... I just couldn't get a good grip on it. Then I realized "OH... right... like the incoherent ramblings of a guy in a hospital bed after an acid trip". Touché. Once I stopped trying to "learn" it, and just took the ride, it quickly grew on me, and now it's one of my favorites.

There is absolutely no way. I was searching for this video out of pure serendipitous naïve curiosity, knowing I would only obtain a blurry reflection of my treasure. But there it lay, glimmering in its beautiful natural sequences of ascension and descension, the act of oscillating through this medium to create a message, only interpretable by those who must or may vibrate at these cosmic frequency. One eye open, the other closed to take in the majesty, as sight is a hinderance to this sonic picture I paint with the brushes bestowed upon me by this chaotic universe. But all of these predictable patterns, unbeknownst to me, led to me finding this center in myself, around which I may orbit in my infantile meditation, shooting beams of hope across this vast void, visible to the naked eye. I am a beacon, a beacon of light - I wander the plains of a cruel being, scattering seeds of my own - So the walls close in, upon this weary head, stretching in incomprehensible geometry, turning into something to be watched and definitely not something to reflect upon, for its impossibility is a sure concept by now - I am a human, unleashed by a motherly tether - So here I am, and here I will remain.

Brad, if you ever see this. The portion of rosetta stones whwre maynard is saying the im the chosen one, ET feeding me oranges part, he is referencing a call that took place in the 90s on the radio show coast to coast AM hosted by art bell in which a guy claims to be an area 51 employee or something and ends up spooking art bell when the call gets interrupted by essential art bells access to broadcasting radio audio is disrupted. Also the flying banana whatever in the skies of area 51 thing is a reference to another caller, perhaps the same one idk
