I wouldnt' describe it as obscure, it was all over the magazines etc when it came out. but It didn't get the stellar reviews everyone expected at the time. It's an amazing game technically and presentation wise, maybe not the best-playing shmup ever but still holds up due to it's awesome graphical/audio and originality
Sweet Jesus this game randomly popped into my head during work ....immediately UA-camd "SNES space shooter game" , first thing Google showed me was axeslay.....here I am.....27 years later
I remember loving this soundtrack so much when this game first appeared that I would take my tape recorder, hold it up to the TV speaker and press record while playing the game. I would have preferred a sound test menu, but I didn’t mind, instead I’d try to avoid firing at enemies to keep the gun noise down.
You were probably not the only one. I used to connect my TV to my stereo so I could tape my favorite NES and SNES tunes. Had my own GotG awesome tape but filled with 8bit/16bit glory that I took everywhere on my walkman.
Dude I did the same thing, except I had figured out how to use the direct stereo out from the SNES into my stereo deck and go directly to tape. But I did the same as you where i just silently flew through levels as much as possible avoiding bullets and not firing just so that I could record the music as cleanly as possible!
Taro Kudo made this soundtrack. The high energy sound really made the atmosphere kept me engaged, pulled me right into the game when I was a child. I couldnt speak english yet, but I was THERE. Classic 80s action vibes, nice.
the only thing that winds me up ahbout this game is the fact that there were only ever 6 levels.......... I remember my mate had this and could never complete it, he was the platfrom king and I was the Shmup king back in 1992. He gave me a lend of this over a weekend and I smashed it. He then said mate, you can keep it and to this day I still have this in it's original box.
Such an iconic OST, easily one of the best on the SNES. Up there with Super Castlevania 4 and Chrono Trigger. Silence still gives me goosebumps, 30 years later. But the whole thing is just banger after banger after banger. Probably the game that made me start appreciating drums as an instrument.
* Planets of the Illis solar system are being threatened by a mysterious enemy. The indestructible forces of this enemy are overwhelming the small and tired fleet of the solar system. After months of tenacious enemy attack only one ship has survived: Axelay. *
I ADORE that game. The gameplay is solid, the graphics are awesome, and the soundtrack is stellar. But I was never able to finish the game because of the random crashes.
This is the best ost of all SNES games. There are others that are really good but this one is just perfect. And the game is quite good too. I've linked your video to one of mine, I hope you don't mind.
@@createprince2093 still working.. I had stopped completely in 2013, when a close friend of mine passed away. This past summer, when I was in the hospital (extremely bad insomnia, which threw everything off). A lot of the doctors, and nurses were encouraging me to get back into it, which was awesome. LOL In 2017, I had used Final Fantasy XV, to create the main character, based on the drawings, I've done of him. It was just to see what he'd look like maybe in a game, it was wild! Doing the final edit, and recording of his character info.
I had this game but the Japanese version, so had to use my converter, didnt understand a word of it but the music was amazing and the gameplay was too but to this day i have never finished it, it was the hardest game i ever played
"Arms installation is complete. Good luck!"
Approaching enemy vessel, good luck!!!
Shivers 😊
Mode 7. Good luck
Turu Luru Loot
THANK YOU.
This game is the epitome of HIDDEN GEM. I’m glad I got to experience this in the 90s and now again through emulation.

Colony is the best the best video game music ever made, so epic!!

This comment is giving me a stroke lol am i reading it wrong?
@@wayne20ukI think the implication is that the person played this game 27 years ago, but it popped into their head recently?
FAKE Jesus didn't exist 27 years ago

Yup. AV out to tape deck. SNES was the soundtrack to my high school days! This game, hands down, one of the best BGM creations of the era.

Love the fact that every boss theme is inspired on its own stage. This game is LOVE.
Good music to an underrated great classic game.
Yes, one of the best SCHMUPS to ever grace the system.
@@caiusmadison2996 agreed, it would make my list of top shmups for the system along with Super Aleste, Parodius and R-Type3 as well as un squadron.
Sin lugar a dudas es el mejor juego de naves de la snes con diferencia y su ost una obra maestra, Colony y mother temazos.
Confirmo
"Mother" is so deeply recorded in my heart ... God..
Absolute monster of a soundtrack.
That SNES jazz organ patch used on Mother and so many other good tracks…so good
the best of the best
A completely forgotten-by Konami dark horse shooter. One of the very best on any system. The æsthetic was mad as hell.
I still remember the first time i heard Silence, i think it was level 5. Loved it!
great track for driving out on the highway at night
Watching the intro gets my blood boiling. Makes me think interstellar 9/11. Same principal. Watch the intro.
@@caiusmadison2996 it draws simiLarities to Contra 3's intRo to some degree
When I heard “Silence” for the first time , I paused the game & just stared at my SNES…just blown the fuck away.
😲that track was absolutely mind blowing. I used to call that level "la baignoire" due to the reverb and the presence of the water.
We are still waiting for the sequel!
Am I the only one who would get misty eyed at the end of the game when this music would come on? 40:34
Incredible game, awesome ost
"Burning" tears in my eyes..

Proudly i can say. This was my second videogame i played in my SNES brand new, after SMarioWorld! 😃
I love the fact that the stage boss have its music based on its stage.
This is probably the best SNES soundtrack ever OG Konami was amazing

Exceptionnel ! Super jeu
Colony and cosmic dance, best soundtracks
👍👍👍
Colony yup.. just so so good.
@@francolinobasco Agree, Colony is a masterpiece in videogame music.
Those drum arrangements...never heard anything like it in a game before or since

This is truly the spiritual successor to Gradius 3
i always loved to watch my dad play this game. damn 9-year-old me had a TASTE
More like you were lucky enough to have a dad with TASTE
1:02. I always loved that intro to Axelay taking off into space.

It's one of the best, but Konmai made some equally cool SNES OSTs, CV4, Gradius 3 and Contra III especially
See you again at Axelay 2
Just got this message in your comment after beat the game on "very very hard" or something like that. Only pro players can recognize this message. 😉
EPIC !!!
Sigo esperando Axelay 2 🥲
Another game soundtrack, that has influenced the comic/game I am working on. It isn't a space shooter though.
you post it somewhere? still working on it?

This OST is movie tier
The best SNES music ever from the best SNES game ever apart from Maximum Carnage.
wow the Bravo part is simply bravo
Back when Konami was at it's best in my opinion.
If we’re to be invaded by aliens, this opening should be played… loud! 😂
this type of music seems was lost in time
A: OH NO A SWARM OF LOCUSTS IS COMING!!!
B: No you silly! it's just the sound effect of hitting a boss in "Axelay"
Why didn´t they make a sequel?
Looks like a skull face in the bottom right asteroid!
Ahhh Konami. Retu
rn please!!
I could never beat it as a kid, later did through emulation and saves lol
Could have sworn I heard metroid fusion at the start.
Fire Shoot and Cosmos could've been Mega Man level themes
😇😃
WAIT WAIT I NEVER PLAYED THIS ONE, IS IT ANY GOOD?
The best on SNES
