A lot of what society deems productive is actually a waste of time
true --> don't listen to society.
@@BetterApe Lad, this video is 'society' telling you to be productive. 'If you do you will regret, if you don't you will regret', you will do what you will do. Have a panic attack now and run headlong into a more busy kind of time wasting. Wasting time is part of every process - let it happen. make a good playlist for a walk if you need to feel productive. Fuck it. And sleep in goddammit.
@@jimoil6372 the fuck you mean let it happen, it's definitely not normal and not healthy. This is the worst advice you could give to someone.
@@BetterApe

I think it's all relative, meaning, what is wasting time exactly? When your life only consists of things you do to benefit yourself or others, you'll likely burnout without noticing it. When you are so busy doing stuff that "matters", you start to crave the peaceful, resting days where you are doing nothing. And when you are doing nothing too much, you are craving to do something so that your life has a "meaning". To conclude: You need to find a balance between doing nothing (resting) and being productive. Having too much of one or the other is not healthy. Seeking balance in anything you do is a process, not a destination.
I think this goes hand in hand with what you want. For me, I want to learn coding, Japanese and workout, and research related to that. Thus, "wasting time" for me means, doing the exact opposite, or anything, that won't contribute to goal. I'm not going to be young forever, and I don't want my goals become accomplished "some day".
If you want something, you have to sacrifice something
Also, I have one friend of mine, who is pretty cool guy with nice personality and to be fun around. However, he spends most of his day behind computer, drinking energy drinks and being awake until early mornings. He is in his early 20', and he does this pretty much every day. This would be for me the definition of wasting time - being in your prime years, wasting time on something so fleeting as this.
Wise words mate. Striving for balance is everything. And it is a life long struggle.
Wide words. Balance is key to everything. Life, diet, exercise, learning, relationships… Our end goal is balance. Only balance makes us happy.
I think the main idea is, if you're not happy, or not productive, then you're wasting time. Being at peace and doing nothing is not a waste of time unless you feel bad doing it. Likewise, if you're not enjoying your work, or you hate what you're doing, then it's a waste of time, even more so if it's not benefitting yourself, or the people you care about.

The sad thing is, you realize way too late that you wasted so much time... In your teens and 20's, "wasting time" is the normal way to go. And then, in your 40's you realize: wtf have I done all the time? Why didn't I invest my time into something meaningful?
You still have time in your 40s, still have time in your 50s, in your 60s, 70s. Start now.
But be real now... what is truly meaningful? haha everything is made up at the end of the day... life has no true meaning.

Staying healthy. Feeling positive emotions. Absorbing wonderful aesthetics. Exploring and discovering new things. Experiencing special moments. Exercising equality.
There is more to living than being productive.
Realize this before you die unhappy.
I agree, you don’t need to make productivity an absolute, but you shouldn’t let yourself go either
The things you said are also productive, watch the video...
Yes truly but spending just needless hours on your phone, scrolling, just reading twitter garbage, engaging in trivial internet celebrity media BS 24/7 only brings you temporary joy and puts you in this state of dependency that is hard to escape from. @@yamatanoorochi3149 for some, exercising equality means using rights you've personally fought to win.

@@annathompson3034also you can try meditation for your anxiety.
True story: a few days ago I was feeling bad, forgotten and useless. Then I decided to do a body scan meditation for the first time in several months. After 10 minutes I felt genuinely calmer, better, and had more hope. It even carried to the next day, when I was feeling just better, genuinely better than before.
Sometimes meditation can feel like a miracle, so if you haven't tried that in a while, it's time to try it now :)
I grew up sitting in front of a computer many days after school, and still have that bad habit. Yet I get more done that I truly value, slowly gets better most years...
Drastic changes of environment helped me, like stepping stones in my life. Short trip overseas, visiting family in another state, the change of culture and perspective has been known to motivate people to reflect and step back from the day-to-day routine.

Maturity is when you realise that you wasted one-third of your life just sleeping and doing nothing
i mean yeah but try reducing that 1/3 and you might even get a 1/2 due to more health complications. realizing is a thing but taking actions to make the remaining 2/3 meaningful is more of a sign of maturity, at least to me.
That can't be counted as wasted time....
Nature created us all to have rest at the end of the day, during the night
And a good sleep is also very important for young children as they grow up during the sleep
The body also fights any kind of illness during the sleep and even build muscles (if you workout)
But the thing that matters is what have you done in the remaining two-third of your life where you were really meant to do something
Bro if sleeping is a waste of time then every human on earth is unproductive which is not the case, sleep is important you can literally die if you don't sleep for like more than a week.
What I'm saying is better sleeping one third of your life than doing nothing one third of your life

Can't lie this video has made me realise how tired and unproductive I am TODAY. *So in some respect, it's already ideal I clicked on this video*
Alongside, I realise and note so many minor things I at least eventually need to/should do, separate from my main dedication which is to study. A circle of things/duties including checking emails, I sometimes have let build up by days, and consequently, your flow in life is messy. The real deal is that time waits for nobody!!!

As a nihilist I dont waste time. I am free to not worry what is "productive"
I'm glad to hear you're content with your life, however something I've learnt is that attaching labels to yourself is seldom a good idea, because they aren't representative of yourself, but rather of others. If you are of genuine faith in nihilism, then that's great. But chances are you may at some point encounter dissonance between your ideals and that of your label. I hope that goes well for you, it has been difficult for me.

I hate the idea that life/time MUST be something useful. That every bit of it has to be spent in some purpose. But I hate even more the idea of living a life thinking by the head of others, by cheap values, by the constant seek for escapism from the core of ourselves and all the pain that comes from it.
The uselessness is what brings some joy to this life, is where true treasures are hidden. Or so i think...
What's the purpose of having a purpose? I know that no one could stand a meaningless life without suffer a lot... but why?
Maybe it is some sorta of escapism from the void of existence, from the intricate "uselessness" of life. How did i come to this point in this comment section? I don't know.

Not your entire life, you still have a good 60 years left in you.

But the actual question is what does not wasting time even mean? What is actually right and worthy of doing? And why should I care what my future self thinks, if my future self is blaming it’s past self for its behaviour and actions then its probably just an excuse
For me, it's whatever I enjoy. If I'm doing stuff just to pass the time because I have nothing else to do, that's wasting time. I recently stopped playing video games not because they are a "waste of time" by themselves, but because I was only playing them to pass the time and not enjoying it. If you are having an amazing time playing video games, keep doing it! If you are having fun getting stuff done, working on personal projects, etc, it's not a waste of time!
Of course there are boring things you have to do as well, working out, eating healthy, etc- but I also just try to find ways to make those fun! TLDR: Wasted time is when your doing activities you don't enjoy, not wasting time is when your doing stuff and having fun.
He answered all that in the video.
Your future self isn’t “making excuses” it’s annoyed you made decisions that they, not you, have to live with.
That is the point of the beginning of the video. YOU know what activities waste YOUR time. It's different for everyone. For myself, I waste time playing games all day when I should be studying to get a good job. With said job I can afford countless things that are even more satisfying than gaming, as well as finally getting rid of the inner feeling of shame at not doing anything meaningful with my time. I could even afford a much nicer gaming setup, and play games better than I do now. Wasting time is like wasting money, if you spent $1 everyday on $1 SlimJims, then you will only ever experience the flavor of a SlimJim. Had you saved that $1 a day for a hundred days, you could treat yourself to a $100 prime steak, which is a far more satisfying and memorable experience.
i just came back from work and sat down with my wife to watch something chill, and this is the first thing that came up. we are laughing rn but this guy is spitting facts!
It's good that this video is short and actually not a time waster, because it's useful info that can be applied instantly.
If playing games and watching movies has satisfaction of 10/10 but does not help you grow, it is counted as wasting time.
Doing less satisfying activities but it helps you grow is not wasting time.
it depends, sometimes the endorphins released from 10/10 fun can help you progress. A happier you is a more productive you (sorry if that sounds corny 🙈). There’ll be less psychological barriers if your brain is happy 🤷 (but I agree with this video 100%. I mean, you can learn from bad films and uninspired video games… but if you’re not learning, and not having fun either then it’s a waste of time that’ll only keep you unhappy unless you snap out of it)
you can’t spend 100% of the day just being productive tho
@@squidddy-dg2em Not just that. Life *isn't* about being productive
Life isn't all about being productive all the time , you are not a machine . You need rest and entertainment
