    I have the older DSL 40c without the master volume controls. I find the clean Plexi sound with the crunch off, gain at 9 o'clock and volume at 3 o'clock. An incredible clean tone through a Marshall? Yes!

    I have the DSL40CR and personally I absolutely love the Green Channel 2....that's where the power of that amp is honestly...especially with a boost like TS9 or MXR Distortion Plus. I honestly think that the Green Channel 2 was made specifically to mimic a plexi to a degree....especially when the gain is set lower below I'd say 2 o clock and below. DSL40CR is a killer great amp for that price.

      I have to say as I play this amp more I definitely love the green on the lead channel. I am using in more all the time and I even mention you could probably get a plexi sounding amp on the lead channel green but like I was saying, everyone ears are different but I am definitely on board with you on this one. Thanks again for your input, this is what it's all about, players reading comments and getting new ideas. Everyone's input is important.

      @@thomasbowlin6787 I've changed speakers in this amp quite a lot. I went from the V-Type original to v30 to G12T-75 and finally Altec Lansing 417. The last is my favorite of the four. The amp is now as heavy as a modern 4x12 but it sounds incredible. The amp alone is so versatile. I personally feel that the crunch channel 1 was meant to represent a jtm45 while OD Green was meant to represent 1959JMP-JCM800 and Red was for JCM900-2000. Techinically the old plexis were consider Super leads and this amp is just the modern version of those anyway. Definitely a great amp. I've had it for a year or two and still play it regularly.

      Yes I do agree about the jcm45 for the crunch with the right overdrive you can get close but tend to agree with you. The last speakers you chose the altec landsings are the speakers Randy Rhoads used when he was playing with Ozzy. I miss the good old days of Sabbath, Ozzy, the who, pink Floyd and Greg Lake but those times are long gone and I have a feeling they won't be back, at least that what I was brought up on and seen everyone I mention, well that tells my age (dinosaur). I have enjoyed conversing with you. Stay safe, just got my flu shot and RVS shot because I am past 60, the after effects suck but I want to protect my mom, she's 90. Take care.

      Did not mean to steer people wrong at all but at the time I did the video I was getting that Jimmy Page sound with the EQ I had it set on with my overdrive just right but I did mention in the video to try the lead channel but after a lot of playing on it now for 4 years I must say, good call on that JCM45 I believe you hit it on the head my friend. Take care and I wish I can afford altec landsings but I can't, there awsome speakers.

    I have a DSL 40CR and a 5 cr and they are both great.. extremely versatile amps .I can get a wide variety of vintage Marshall tones from both amps .
    This will sound counter intuitive but for vintage Marshall tones I like to use the red ultra Gain with the Gain set on 3 and the guitars volume rolled down to 8.5 .. Does a very nice new wave of British heavy metal tone . Low to medium output PAF style humbuckers go along way as well I like using the the ultra red with the Gain low much more then the ultra green with the Gain set a little a higher. I find the green channel a little too bright and thin at low to medium Gain settings. The red channel with the Gain set low is fatter thicker and has more lower mids so the sound is warmer and a little darker. It has more body. It also works better to get a vintage Marshall should at lower volumes . It helps to keep the resonance set low with the ultra red even at low Gain as the ultra red can get very mushy . At low Gain with the resonance low on ultra Gain red you get a very nice vintage low end m spongy but not mushy. Also does a real nice 1975 to 1977 live Alex lifeson tone .

      Love Rush, I think those were the best years for his tone myself.....thank you for sharing how you achieve the vintage tone and that does make total sense leaving the OD2 drive way down. That OD2 is a nice and fat tone and backing off on the guitar volume, that's great. This is what I was waiting for is people leaving comments on how they achieve that vintage sound. Appreciate it very much.

    If you want it to sound like a JCM800, put it on the green channel/crunch, max out the gain and hit it with a Tubescreamer or SD-1. Sounds even better than the gain channels.

    I definitely agree with you about the classic gain channel. The tones there are just a lot more defined and not as compressed fizziness that the ultra gain channel has. I usually keep my gain fairly low at about 4 so I can push the volume up a lot more when jamming which gets those power tubes cooking more like the vintage amps. And I pretty much keep resonance on 0 at all times. The plexi is a pretty tight sounding amp and they never had resonance controls so keeping it off just makes sense to me.

I put a celestion creamback in the amp and all of a sudden it was the classic Marshall tone. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, it's very much appreciated. Also I never talk about speaker swaps because everyone and there brother will put there 2 cents about which is the best speaker. What are you settings you use on the TS-9? I will be using it for classic rock

    • @thomasbowlin6787
      @thomasbowlin6787  Рік тому +1

      Very good question I also play classic rock. I use a couple different settings. When I use my Les Paul, the gain is usually around 12 o'clock and that really depends on how much gain I have on the channel I am using but 12 o'clock is where it's usually at
      My tone when I use the Les Paul is usually around 1-3 o'clock and my level is usually at 12 o'clock. Now for my stratocaster, my gain is usually around 2-3 o'clock, my tone, usually 9-10 o'clock to tame the brightness of the strat and level usually at 12 o'clock. These parameters I gave you do change depending on the size of the room so I am merely stating what the most common settings I use and they change depending on what Les Paul I am using because I own 4 of them and might change depending on what strat I use and I own 3 of those. Now the parameters I use is where I start and usually don't deviate to far from those settings I just make slight changes because no 2 guitars sound alike, some are brighter than others and so on. I hope this helped, set your gain on the amp where ever it feels comfortable to your ears because if you have the gain cranked up to much then turn your overdrive on you can actually get lost in the mix, atleast thats been my personal experience and I have been giging since 1978, alright call me old, lol. But please keep the 2 most important things in mind. 1st, let your ears tell you where it sounds good to you and 2nd to much overdrive compresses the signal naturally and you actually can get lost in the mix. With all this in mind you will get the sound your looking for and the settings I use might not work for someone else because that's what sounds good to me. Like I stated, I hope this helped. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment, it's very much appreciated. Take care.

    How does one know if they have a dsl 40 cr if it doesn’t say cr on the control panel?

    • @thomasbowlin6787
      @thomasbowlin6787  Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching. Good question. The 1st way to tell is the DSL40C does not have master volumes, only channel volumes. you can get fooled just by glancing at them because there are 2 control knobs in the same place but on the C they control the reverb for the 2 separate channels so you can have a different reverb on channel 1 and a different reverb on channel 2, those are the knobs to the far right where on the CR they are now 2 master volume and the CR now has 1 reverb for both channels. It is confusing since they don't put the C or the CR on the front panel but you can also confirm which model you have by looking at the back of the amp where the serial numbers are and the model number will be there. Hope this helps.

    Hello first of all i dont know much about amps, my dsl40cr arrived today. I somehow cant find my right tone. I would like to get like an slayer, black label society, CoB, (metal) sound. Do you think an tubescreamer would help?
    For me the Marshall sounds somehow fuzzy right now ☹️
    Thanks!!!

    • @thomasbowlin6787
      @thomasbowlin6787  11 місяців тому

      Thanks for asking. Well yes a tube screamer would really help alot but that fuzzy sound has probably alot to due with the cheap speaker they put in the amp, that's how they keep the cost down. So 2 things 1 get a tube screamer or some kind of overdrive or distortion pedal 2 replace the speaker and those 2 things would help out greatly. I put a celestion creamback in my Marshall but that may not or maybe a good speaker for you it is all a personal preference. I would do research on both because you may want a pedal with more overdrive or distortion and look at blogs on the internet to see what others have to say about pedals and speakers. So many players have replaced the speaker in those amps it's not funny, go look on UA-cam and you will probably see a bunch of videos on guys replacing those speakers plus that be a great place to get info on what pedal you might want to buy because I am not familiar with the sounds of those bands you mentioned. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment, it's very much appreciated. I hope atleast I started you on the right track where to get some good info. On UA-cam look up speakers on the Marshall DSL40CR and see the response players give about them.

    • @thomasbowlin6787
      @thomasbowlin6787  11 місяців тому

      Don't be discouraged, it takes time and usually money to find the tone your looking for. Very few players get the sound there looking for on the first day unless they been playing a long time and am familiar with how a amp works to get the tone there looking for. Welcome to the world of getting the tone your looking for were spending money is a big part of the process because you buy one thing that leads to buying another one and so on. Goodluck in your journey I hope you find what your looking for without spending alot of money but that is a great amp so you probably won't be spending to much to get the sound your looking for but a good speaker would help out greatly and a good speaker is not to bad as far as spending money but it could depending which speaker you get but do alot of research on that because once you by a speaker there is no refund anywhere that I know of.

      @@keithplunk6611 Thank you Keith for your kind words and don't worry about getting cynical, we all have those moments after all we are just human. Thanks for your response it is really appreciated and have a good one my friend. Sorry for removing some replies but I felt I could have worded with more understanding of where I was coming from. Your also a good man for getting back to me in a pleasant way.
