Kate Bush, is one of the most extraordinary artists of the Rock Era. She has an incredible way of manifesting her untamed imagination into an emotional, cinematic musical experience, that is truly unparalleled. The music of Kate Bush is wildly esoteric, and so interesting, unpredictable & affective. There is constant innovation with no rule book on song composition, as Kate challenges our senses- weaving in simulated sounds of jungles, helicopters, sheep, Aboriginal chants, demons, and an even an angry mule:
Once you REALLY listen to a Kate Bush song, it incessantly reverberates in your soul- like a guardian angel. Kate’s biggest hit in America, the haunting “Running Up That Hill” (A Deal With God), has had a pop culture renaissance because of placement of the song in a climactic scene in Season 4 of the Netflix smash series Stranger Things: The use of the song has opened a new horizon of artistic expression for a new generation of fans to discover the timeless genius of Kate Bush, and became the #1 most downloaded track on Apple Music’s iTunes chart, and #1 ‘most streamed’ song on the U.S. Spotify Chart- almost 40 years after its original release.
Before the release of Kate’s seminal Hounds of Love album in 1985, she had released 4 albums of exquisitely crafted art rock- beginning with her debut LP The Kick Inside in 1978. The lead single from the album was “Wuthering Heights” showcasing Kate’s towering vocal majesty.“Wuthering Heights" levitated all the way to #1 in the UK, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand: “Wuthering Heights” was followed by the tender examination of “The Man with the Child in His Eyes” that went to #6 in the UK:
Between 1978 & 1981, Kate scored nine Top-20 hits in the UK, over 3 platinum selling albums. However, sales dipped considerably for her 1982 album The Dreaming. Although it was another stimulating record, full of intriguing tracks, the declining sales, and futility of the last two singles released from the album, put Kate in a challenging position with her label, EMI Records.

I teach high school art. I usually play music during class. One of my students asked me to play "Wuthering Heights" by Kate Bush. My jaw dropped and I said "How do you know that song?" People who were not around in the mid-80s can NOT picture the extent of this song's originality. In the mid-80s, top 40 radio was all about Madonna, Duran Duran, Prince and big hair rock bands. There's nothing wrong with those artists, but you have to understand that this song sounded like it came from another world. It still does. No other song sounded like it. It's still the case.

a couple of weeks ago, my 11-year-old goddaughter was singing Running Up That Hill. I started singing along with her. She stopped, amazed that I knew the song. I was amazed as well, having never seen Stranger Things and being ignorant of the song's renewed popularity. Mya, of course, had no idea the song was nearly four decades old. It was a great moment that I will never forget.

This song came out when I was 16. Fearless and unafraid, my best friend (who looked like Kate Bush) and I looked into our futures and faced life like the pirates we knew we were. Little did I know, I would lose her in a plane crash only five short years later. It was this song that carried me through her death as I bargained with God to somehow bring her back. Thank you, Kate. I owe you so very much.

My daughters, who are all in their 20's were shocked that their friends didn't know Kate Bush's music. My girls grew up listening to "The Red Shoes", "Hounds of Love", "The Kick Inside", "The Sensual World" and of course "The Whole Story". They, every once in awhile, forget that not all parents share a broad and varied love for music and musicians with their kids growing up. Keep at it.

Went to knock on his door last week to tell him to get to bed it's a school night and he was singing the Beatles Yellow Submarine LOL Some people just have eclectic taste in music and some don't. I became a Kate Bush fan as a freshman in college with the release of 'Never Forever'. Few of my college friends were familiar with her. 'The Dreaming' was a a challenging listen - and I loved it. However, I was asked by my housemates NOT to play the album while they were home because it 'frightened' them - which only made me love it more. My strongest memory with 'Hounds of Love' is that I was on a 4-day sail on a ship (from Alaska to Seattle) and I spent most of my time on the bow, at night, listening to HOL on my walkman, over and over and over. It was winter (freakin' cold) and Haley's Comet was making its appearance in the night sky. It was a surreal experience.
I thought Kate Bush really hit her stride with 'The Sensual World'.

@@negativevibemerchant2670 I've been a fan since 1978, I remember when she arrived on the scene in the UK, the UK airwaves was full of Punk and Disco songs at that time, then straight out of left field came Kate.
No one quite knew at first what to make of her,she was this strange bewitching young woman singing a song that had no hook about the story of Wuthering heights, till you realised the hook was Kates voice.
She is a once in a generation artist, I think it's great that she's finding a wider audience now after all these years.

When they did, I showed them my 29 Kate Bush CD's including 8 disk Japanese boxed set, and other foreign pressings as well as 2 that were just interviews with Kate. They were shocked. They thought they had discovered this hidden 80's gem and didn't realize that some of us have been huge fans for decades. She is one of the top 3 artists I've been obsessed with for a long time. The other 2 are Peter Gabriel and Oingo Boingo (I know, one of these things is not like the other). But I'm so excited that a new generation is giving Kate the love that she deserves.

Not only has Kate's music been central to me, but it's also her utter brilliance with lyrical depth which has kept me a fan since the very first single - she's a poet, without a doubt, and her understanding of pain and love is almost magical. That this song's release coincided with the death of my baby son has meant it has a deep meaning for me, one I can't try to vocalise. Ever since I've followed everything she's done and played them all the time. They speak to me in a way nothing else ever has.

They can't feel all the years between this song and today, they assume someone wrote a song, engineered it and just called some vocalist in to sing. Not their fault, but if they're not willing to explore that lore, to me they're just trying to get views, and that just won't do. 🔥💜

I was introduced to Kate Bush in 1985 through the inclusion of her song “Breathing” on the first Greenpeace collection LP released in the U.S. that summer. I was getting ready to leave for a semester abroad in Europe that autumn, and was trying to get more familiar with European pop artists before I left. The Greenpeace album was a great intro to several artists not in the American mainstream.
I was so taken with Kate’s voice that upon my first visit to a record shop in Copenhagen, I saw giant posters advertising “Hounds of Love”, which had just been released. I bought a cassette copy without having heard the first single off the album and was completely blown away by this tour de force. I didn’t realize at the time what HOL represented in the evolution of her work as an artist. I didn’t even know that Pat Benetar’s reworked “Wuthering Heights” was Kate’s song originally.
I spent the next three months crisscrossing Europe with HOL as my soundtrack for dozens of train trips. My Walkman had auto reverse and I’d put it in loop mode until the batteries ran out. The sounds and rhythms of HOL are so emotionally ingrained in my head and heart with train travel that every time I hear any of these cuts I’m transported back to being 22 and on my own in the world for the first time.
Thanks, Kate, Stranger Things and Adam for stirring these lovely memories.

I was already a Kate Bush fan when The Hounds of Love came out. When Running Up That Hill rose up the charts the first time I was working as a DJ in radio and I can say that song sounded like nothing else in the Top 40 at the time. Kate was (and is) a genius innovator who took risks with her music that sometimes failed, but when they paid off, did they ever pay off, as they did with Running Up That Hill (and the whole Hounds of Love album!). It's great that her music is being rediscovered now by a new generation of fans.

I feel that some of her later albums are not up to the standards of those earlier works. 50 Words For Snow, for example, was an interesting experiment in longer form pieces but just doesn't really quite gel for me (despite the fact that I love long songs). The Dreaming is brilliant, my favourite album by her.

"She's Having a Baby" is John Hughes' great married yuppy follow-up to all the high school angst that he captured so well. The quotes and soundtrack have been woven through our 30+ year marriage.
I never imagined our identification with the characters would ever change from Jake & Kristy to the parents. Everything changes with time.

My introduction to Kate Bush was minor at first, hearing Pat Benatar's "Wuthering Heights" in 1981 for the first time. I was 13 and loved the song. Then in 1985 I heard "Running Up That Hill" and was a fan instantly. I bought Hounds of Love and the big three, "Running Up That Hill", "Cloudburting" and "Big Sky" got overplayed in my room - daily. I was crushed when Kate didn't quite catch on here in America but I'm thankful she is getting her due now. It's long overdue and well deserved.

I absolutely loved Wuthering Heights on the radio. When I got my first money as a teenager in early 1978, the first thing I bought was three albums on cassettes on the same day: The Kick Inside, I Robot, and the already a few years old Dark Side of the Moon. The next time I scraped some money together I got War of the Worlds and Even in the Quietest Moments. Weird tastes for a 15 year old in New Zealand, but there you have it. I also bought and soldered the circuit board for a stereo car cassette player kit so I could listen to music in my bedroom. The only other possibility in the house was a Panasonic portable mono radio/cassette. My parents just absolutely weren't into music at all.

The choice of Running Up that Hill for that scene in Stranger Things fits perfectly, another reason why it resonates so much with the audience. Max has closed herself off from her friends after the trauma of losing Billy in the last battle with the monsters from the Upside Down. She writes letters to everyone to tell them the things she wasn’t able to say, but Lucas tells her he’d much rather she’d let him back in and just talk. It’s extremely moving, even in the context of the usually fleeting relationships in our teenage years. The song literally saves her life, showing the power of music. Such a great show.

I went out the next day and bought her first album, and that began a mad crush on both her and her music that lasted for so many years. As she started going years between releases, my obsession waned but anytime something new came out I bought it immediately, and will continue to do so if she gifts us with more music. My 23-year-old son discovered “Running Up That Hill“ on TikTok and knew who Kate was because I’ve mentioned her so many times during his life. He fell in love with the song, so I talked him into listening to the Hounds of Love album and he really enjoyed that too. I’ve always been one to listen to newer music so we share a lot of common musical taste - but it makes me so happy to be able to share a song with him now that meant the world to me almost 40 years ago. I rediscovered Kate Bush's music about two years ago - as a child I thought she was kinda weird but now I'm much older, I realise she did some outstanding work that still holds its own today. She was only 19 when she released The Kick Inside.

What is so amazing about Wuthering Heights is she took the classic Gothic Novel and turned it into a 5 minute epic and she vocalized it to sound like a ghost. And she is 19 yo when she does this. Absolute Genius.

I really dont have the words of how high her standing is. Peerless, unique, pioneering, a legend in her own lifetime. I can't say that about many artists!
I grew up listening to her early stuff thru the bedroom wall as my older sister was a fan. It wasn't until Hounds of Love was released and i was older that i realised how magnificent she is, it was one of those revelation moments

Kate’s entire tour of America was one appearance on the original SNL with Eric Idle as host. She performed The Man With The Child In His Eyes, sitting on the piano mimicking the movements of her video with Paul Shaffer playing the piano. Her second song was the incredible Them Heavy People. I never heard of her before, but she made an impression that I’ve never forgot. Running Up That Hill has gone on to top the Billboard Global 200 chart recently. She’s truly an incredible artist.

Just imagine an album like Hounds of Love and The Dreaming coming out in the 80s - absolutely incredible.

I was and am a metal and hard rock guy who appreciates Kate’s mastery (along with a lot of other idiosyncratic female singers, e.g. Bjork) while not necessarily caring for every song. My favorite is Love and Anger. The use of the home as a metaphor is just brilliantly executed and the line “you walk into this room like your walking into my arms…” is beautiful. The Gilmore guitar work is awesome as well (and how my 20 year old self justified liking it back in the day). Love your channel and here is hoping her re-emerging on the charts gets her over the hill in the next years Rock Hall nominations and voting.

There is such a desert of creativity in music today. When you show a millennial or younger truly sophisticated music from the 60s-90s, like Kate, or Steely Dan, or Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey, etc, you can just see them be immediately overwhelmed. There is a sudden realization that they have been completely ripped off. They have no idea how much music can really contain, until they hear it

    • @Irys1997
      @Irys1997 2 роки тому +2

I don't mean that music must be sophisticated to be good, either. There is plenty of room in rock and roll for stupidity with a purpose, like Hey Ho Let's Go or Holiday in Cambodia or Planet Claire or similar too. But today's music isn't like that either. We get the worst of all worlds, stupidity without purpose

Absolutely I’m an 81 baby and had an eclectic music upbringing thanks to my parents and grandparents everything from Engleburt Humperdinck, Tom Jones, Glen Miller Band,to the Beatles, The Bee Gees, The Rolling Stones, ABBA, Madonna, Fearghal Shatner, AC/DC, Jon Bob Jovi, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin etc so basically everything from Big Band Jazz, Folk, Country and Western, Rock and Roll, Blues, Classical and Pop. I actually lament the state of modern music in the last couple of years. I’d say in the last 3 to 5 years there have been some greats there have been lots of flops too

Growing up in the 80s, I remember hearing this song but it was always in the background and never listened to directly by me. I remember hearing it at malls, in others cars, my sister's stereo, at the local pool. Just like in Stranger Things, it added a dreamlike ambience that heavily affected the mood, indirectly. Truly a genius song and now that I realize it (back in the 80s it was more on a subconscious level), I will delve into her other material.

Adam, I met my wife in the fall of 1985 at Washington State University, I was a junior and she was a sophomore. We both loved that song. If you know Pullman, it’s full of hills. Late in the evening, every Friday and Saturday night, usually during a heavy snowstorm, I would walk her from my dorm (Orton) to her dorm (Regents). We would recite the song, “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)”. We were both so in love and so worried about our courses and majors and we wanted our relationship to last forever and our careers were important as well. Kinda similar to the song. It has worked out, we have been married for 35 years. I cried when I watched your video, it brought back so many memories, so many emotions. My wife watched it from the kitchen, I could see that she cried as well. Kate Bush and “Running Up That Hill”, it’s so indescribably great.

As a huge fan, I find it odd that so many people are oblivious to the fact that she is a well-regarded and celebrated genius.
