- We take a look at the one of a kind experimental Corvette with a V12 engine called the Corvette ZR-12 at the National Corvette Museum. Just listen to that monster!
Derek Moore (Curator of the museum) goes into much more detail about this car here:

CORRECTION: at 1:30, I got displacement mixed up with number of cylinders. The Corvette has 10 liters, while the Viper has 10 cylinders. I made a goof when I said, "The Corvette has almost 10 liters, the same displacement as the Viper." Sorry about that!
DtRockstar1 : Its all good. The Ryan Falconer V12 I remember well. 600 cubes of fun. GM Powertrain also continued to show stop with periodic 90 degree V12s based on the Small Block Chevrolets. Its great to see it in its now safe environment. It could have been lost so easily. Its such a grear machine.
@@deanstevenson6527 Thanks Dean! It is such a relief to know that it didn't end up in the crusher or the sinkhole.
LOL I literally started laughing out loud when I read your comment! Thank you 😊 It’s so true though, it’s amazing how people can’t be man enough to own up to their mistakes. Thank you so much for the kind comments and your support, and especially the laugh!😎😂👍
was just about to write a comment to that effect
Anthony Smith fopa? lmao 😆 i think you mean faux pas i thought fupa when i first read your verbal faux pas lolol
Dodge, lets make a car everyone hears about and wants... Chevrolet: Lets make a response but keep it hidden.
The zr-1 was already faster in every way two years before the viper came out
a response that woulda blew dodge out of the water. i wonder if dodge had a blown v10 superviper sittin in a warehouse like this v12 vette was.
Still would rather own something that wouldn't leave me stranded on the side of the road. But that's just me
@Th3Aggr3ssiv3 Cons3rvativ3 Well shit. Dodge is the best IMO out of the big three ford cars breakdown to much and chevy is chevy. Doge is the most reliable out the big 3 now ford 2nd highest and chey 3rd lowest so I think that explains it self.
Mopar boi 420 Rochr I don’t know about that. Dodge owns Jeep and mines a piece of crap
Am I the only one thinking the driver REALLY needs to get off the clutch?
The engine ignition system may not be able to advance past base timing for some reason. I had a car with that problem once and it sounded and acted just like this.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I thought so lol
I thought he kept pulling out in 2nd gear. Looks great, but they need to fix the headlight mechanism too. The later C4s are the best of the C4s, sexy.
Nope, you ain't alone, I was thinking the same thing. I'm sure replacing the clutch in that monster ain't cheap.
Sounds like its running on 9 cylinders... won't idle, sounds like it could use an experienced driver and a clutch adjustment.
maybe you're right
Yes, it was missing. Most likely due to old fuel from sitting too long. Hard to say. It was misfiring in some shots but not others. Definitely a difference between.
@Jeff Lee 12 cylinders. Thats where the similarities end. Absolutley nothing like a packard/merlin lol
I thought he said it was a marine race engine for boats, either way it sounds like shit
Eddy Robb .......hahaha. Nearly choked on my coffee.
I've heard more than one V/12, and that one has a nasty miss fire.
Thank you!! I thought it was just me
Yes! Sounds terrible.
Definitely a fouled plug or two. They let Motor Trend run it in the 1/4 mile. Probably hurt the motor before they parked it.
Thank you! It sounds like hammered sheet to me too. Thought it was going to die without the throttle stabs.
Was just about to comment the same...obviously having some issues. A proper v12 running sounds WAY smoother.
This is one Corvette that even I have never heard of.
You should check out the "Corvette Indy Concept Car"- that will blow your mind!
I recognize that profile pic, I always see you post in that one Facebook group
"Sounds like nothing else!"
Refuses to rev above 1100rpm, or drive above 15mph.
There’s only one of these
@@fmcdomer what does that have to do with what I said.
@@jamesking9385 preservation dumbass
Daniel i quick rev to 5k isnt gonna destroy the thing. he could just say he “didnt mean to”
It is a museum piece, not for consumer use.
If this would have made it in production the automotive industry's response would have been awesome.
This guy gets paid to burn up a clutch, drive through a parking lot and do about 15mph...wow I'm impressed. Also sounded like it was only running on 9 cylinders.
Sounds like it has a special cam
It’s a v12 where are you getting 9cylinders from?
It's firing on all 12 for sure.
He’s driving like a bitch
The shot of the ZR-12 and the RT/10 in red side by side with the hoods open just took me back to being a kid, they both look as tasty and beautiful and amazing as they did when I saw them for the first time nearly 30 years ago !
Thanks for that👍
You're doing a tremendous service to the automotive Enthusiast Community by posting videos of these extremely rare and obscure cars. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much my friend!! Finding all of these cars and sharing them with everyone is pretty much my mission, and it puts a smile on my face knowing that there are people out there who appreciate it! :)
@@DtRockstar1 You are very welcome. This is unrelated, and you may have already seen this video, but curatedTV just did a video on a Cizeta.
ua-cam.com/video/5gnkpfqW2yI/v-deo.html
@@StewartLucrative Yep, just saw it a few days ago! Claudio told me that that is his personal favorite Cizeta.
You can tell that thing has been sitting forever the valve guides are already worn as it’s burning oil every time he revs it.
Valve guide seals, I think you mean...?
Holy shit the way that thing growls. You’d never expect to hear that in any factory street car. A V12 that growls the way a V8 does.
wonder what it sounds like when it's running correctly.
Completely different
Wonder what it sounds like above idle.
sounds like a bad missing tractor. :(
I was going to say. Definitely sounds like it’s missing on at least one cylinder and it’s smoking with blueish oil smoke. It needs to be given a new set of plugs, an oil change and to never be started unless it is going to be fully warmed up. Those guys are destroying the engine in that car limping it around like that.
@@bowoody1800 It sits in a museum for eternity, why would they bend over backwards to make sure it's in 100% optimal running condition? I'm sure they have like 50 other Corvettes that need attention, too.
11.6 @133!!! What?! Awesome! Great qtr. mile timeslip - even for today. That's just as fast as the test results Car and Driver magazine obtained for a McLaren F1 in 1997, and that was a nearly million-dollar car! Love C4's. My first Corvette was a Polo Green, tan int., tan top C4 convertible. Gorgeous car. My dad bought it for me as a graduation present because I had nearly all A's in college. I was so happy - but it's screwed with a lot of people's heads; they just couldn't handle it... I've purchased 10 more Vettes since. 1 more C4 (1996), 5 C5's (1999-2004 -2 ZO6s), and 4 C6's (2008-2011, including a 2010 ZR1). Great job on this documentary; I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I expected it to sound good. It doesn't. Also sounds like he's revving it just to keep it running.
There are builders in Australia that came with a V12 version of the LS.
I've been privileged to see this beauty in person twice at the museum. Sick!
That is a priceless gem of a car !
Even our V12s rumble like a muscle car
Would be cool to see someone build a modern interpretation with the V12 LS motor
An Australian company builds them.
ZR1
@@apancher whats the company named
@@salortega4473 "V12LS" followed by the Dot and the Com that the link-eating-AI would delete from my comment,... ;)
They're made in a suburb about an hour and a half drive from me.
Richard Holdener of Hot Rod magazine fame is currently building a V12 LS.
So many talking about how bad it sounds. Yeah, at first I was like, "What the Fuck!!??"....but started thinking, maybe they didn't have a flat plane crank in it, then they said it was originally a "marine engine" so it's probably angled differently than what a Ferrari or Lamborghini V-12 is angled at. Firing order of the pistons are probably different too. Then the exhaust is not the tuned titanium exhausts that we have come use to hearing from Ferrari V-12's, or Lamborghini V-12's....
Just a few factors to think about.
With saying all that, I'm still sure it could probably use a good tune up.
Come to think of it, the corvettes of that time didn't have the best exhaust either
Come to think of it, the corvettes of that time didn't have the best exhaust either
@@jgordon7719 exactly, so taking everything into consideration, it's going to sound like poop!!!!
I'm sure with some modern touches, it would be an amazing car....
Could you imagine, a modern V-12 in 2019 C7 ZR1!!!! That would be awesome!!!
I strongly agree with you. Just as i have heard ignorant ppl say the idle is horrible and it has a misfire when in fact the vehicle has a lumpy cam(not particularly this vehicle) causing erratic idle.
100% right on all counts, but I'd like to think that if they actually produced this car that they'd have taken efforts to not make it sound like ass... I was looking forward to them starting it and when they did I almost puked, that's the shittiest sounding V12 and probably performance car in general I've ever heard, it's actually to the point of comedy lol. Imagine starting that shit when your friends are all stoked that you got a new 'Vette! *cranking sound* "WoopwoopwoopwoopWOOOOOOOPwoopwoopwoop"...
Is it just me or are there about 3-4 cylinders not firing? At first I thought it just needed to warm up, but that didn't seem to help. Def something going on with the timing there. 🤷♂️
Regardless, a V-12 C4?!! How flipping cool is that! Thanks for posting.
I wish they did a light rolling launch. It isn't made of egg shells.
Sounds like it was running pretty shitty though.
@@samotrx7 Could have been the $20 mufflers some beancounter had them stuff on after the sidepipes.
@@hydrocarbon8272 you can hear it when it revs and it was blowing some blue smoke in the video as well. something is definitely up with that motor
willfiveoh who cares. they have mechanics at the corvette museum to work on their cars anyway lol. this thing could use a restoration
@@yungtooli alot of people did. We wanted to see how it sounded an ran.
Love this thing! Thanks for sharing! I remember this from the article in Motor Trend, where they also tested other Vettes like the Snake Skinner and I believe a Guldstrand. The sidepipes were terrible, and I'm glad they're gone. It looks so much cleaner here.
Oh wow! I thought that this was gonna be some guy who engine swapped a Mercedes V12 into a C4. I had never heard of this car before this video. Thank you for the info!!!
I had was not aware of this awesome machine, and I've owned three Vettes; still own one. Very impressive.
My first gen Viper was a hoot but I would’ve seriously considered this if it was available and similarly priced. My emerald green Viper was $54k out the door so I’m not sure where this would’ve been price wise
Viper was cheaper by a lot. The normal-ish V8 ZR1 was over $70k
I read the article that leads to this video, and it said that this engine was a $45k option in 1990. I'm sure it would have sold like hotcakes
@@heliserrato9579 I don't know about that. That was a huge amount of money back in 1990. A stock C8 costs less than that now especially considering inflation and performance! The C4 ZR1 was not a cheap car by any means.
I think one article was saying you add the 45k to the already 70k Vette and it would have been a 120k+ vette
My 1990 ZR-1 was 60k, that's what the original owner told me.
I’ve seen this car on a few occasions at the museum and always wondered what it sounded like. Outside of the DOHC LT5 and the mid engine concept (No longer concept, I know) I always thought this was the most interesting oddball Corvette.
I used to work with Ryan's brother, Ralph Falconer, at a pattern machine shop in Albuquerque, NM.
Ralph was a super cool guy, full of old school knowledge and loved to talk about how he helped ryan develop this platform in the 80's.
I remember reading about this in a Corvette magazine when it was built. The hood had to be lengthened to accommodate that LONG V12 which was basically one and a half V8s. ✔️
DAMMIT MAN!!, I thought my 1990 ZR-1 was badass, this thing is a beast. Thanks for posting, wicked!!! 👍👍🏁🏁🏁. It sounds like a P-47!
Wow imagined they put this car in production back in the 90s 😱😱
Woulda handled like crap. Something Chevy wouldn't accept
@@veganpotterthevegan i mean for back then standards i dont think handling was on there mind. Chevy recently started focusing more on track/cornering , this corvette would have been from late80/early 90 all auto makers esp here in america were just shoving big engines where they didnt belong
I remember this car being in Motor Trend magazine back when that issue came out. I had totally forgotten about it until this. Thanks for posting.
Jesus that was a fuckin rush watching that monster creep around the parking lot! Unbelievable footage dude. I'm shaking right now.
This engine is also used on the blue thunder P-51 mustangs.
That is correct!
Dang, this guy has no clue how to drive a shifter. Holy moly...
I think I have that Motor Trend Magazine when this Corvette was tested, along with other tuned Corvettes, I remember this car according to the test, reached 211 mph. It's a huge engine
I was lucky enough to see this car in person. Wish I were lucky enough to hear it in person too.
Judging by the blue smoke comming out of the exhaust, I can tell they took really good care of it... 🙄 Also it sounds like the guy drags the hell out of the clutch.
That blue puff on first start is most likely the valve seals going out. As some one who works on old vettes, this is a common thing
@@russelltoddinc Valve seals failing on older vehicles is common in general, regardless of make or model. But they shouldn't have failed on something that is showroom kept since day one and rarely driven...
Guns&Cars I’ve replaced them on vettes with 200k and ones with only 10k on the odo. It’s been my experience that 15-20 years is the service life
@@russelltoddinc Even if that's the case, they have neglected the maintenance on this vehicle by not replacing them. And all that burnt oil is causing excessive carbon buildup internally, especially since it seemingly never sees road use or anything above 1500rpm to expell any of it- so it just keeps collecting. As I said, they're not taking very good care of this historic one of a kind vehicle...
@@BuckeyeBallistics You have a fundamental lack of understanding of age on seals. Sparse use, even showroom conditions will age seals over time and without being ran consistently, they're probably all brittle. Cars aren't meant to sit and then be driven cross country, not how it works.
Is it me or is it puffing smoke and sounds like it has a miss??
Sounds like shit come on people
Exactly! Blue smoke and sounds like an exhaust leak. Very disappointed as I wanted to hear the supposed Satan Shriek. I understand babying a museum piece but they definitely overhyped this one....
Definitely needs a good tune up
I bet changing the plugs is a pain given its a v12 so probably the original still in there.
It sounds like pure trash.
I remember this car from a magazine clip, years ago! Awesome!
Phenomenal car! Thanks for filming!
Thank you for checking it out!
They should have replaced the fouled spark plugs so it would run on all 12 cylinders. And use a driver that knows how to use the clutch properly instead of the duffess that was driving it.
Disappointing they didn't rev it up somewhat close to the redline.
I think they revved it as high as it would go - the thing barely runs.
The wheel in the hamster cage turns faster than thing
Amazing introducing of this legend!
I've always wondered about this car since I found out about it. I love c4s, just the best
yoooooooooo id love me a boat powered vette ngl

Holy shit, that rumble! So damn good! God I would love be in the presence of that car when it was started.
Employees casually walking by @ 3:38 are either not car guys or the museum brings the ZR-12 out every other day.
Imagine how this would sound with Straight pipes ?
Same firing order as our engines, so pretty close to this: ua-cam.com/video/h41VyQLuLKs/v-deo.html
If it hasnt done a burnout, it's not a vette
@ThePatUltra or a crowd, or a tree, or a moving car, or a curb
Best sounding V12 ever IMO because it sounds the most like 3 cross plane V4s or 1.5 V8s of anything I have heard yet. Very muscley sounding.
Nice concept....that year of Corvette had the best body style.
But the interiot looks horrible.
Guy's driving like he sat on the toilet too long and his left leg is asleep
LOL
The engine sounds like it’s too big, as if it makes all the power at a much lower rpm like an industrial engine. All I hear is muffler on this thing, and it doesn’t sound much like a proper v12
The way it sits today looks way better and more of a sleeper then the side pipe look
That interior, that's a true future dash, not some ipad stuck in some plastic accompanied by a 50hz whining sound. This vette is a gem and sounds amazing.
600cui = 9,83L :)
Lol
Even this rare Super Vette has a light that won't turn up.
I’m blown away by the 32 mph drive by on the road.
What insane madman at GM came up with this bonkers Corvette?
A wonderful human being did.
This is what you see when you play Forza Horizon 4 all the time every mofo Car swapped with v fockin 12s. Nobody uses stock engines anymore what a joke.
maybe if you put down the video games and got a job you could start building YOUR dream hot rod instead of shitting on everyone elses, noob
sounds like crap. Whoever was the exhaust engineer should be fired. hitting on 9 cyliners.
Yeah it sounds like it's choking
Don't think its the engineer so much as the fact nobody wants to tear down and rebuild an engine that nobody has worked on, can't find parts for, and has no idea how the thing is even put together.
@@RidinDirtyRollinBurnouts It's like an LS but with 4 more cylinders lined up, what's so complex about it? It's just a longer V8 lol. Parts might be difficult to find, but they're in Bowling Green heart of GM manufacturing, I'm sure they can work some magic.
Wow, never heard about this car. Love your narrated vids so much Chris🏁
Thanks a bunch, Guido! I remember reading about this car when I was a kid and I just had to go and see it.
What a BEAST- never even knew it existed! It is too bad it never made it to production; a showdown between this and the Viper would've been AWESOME!!!
Wow that's the worst sounding V12 of all time
I forgot about this thing. Remember reading about it in R&T back in the day!
Amazing!
Who would have thought a C4 is one of the rarest and most powerful Corvettes ever.
of all the "1 ofs corvettes", this one really is it
Very cool! 👍
That sound is amazing :o
The Viper didn't have a 10-liter-displacement. It was a 10cylinder, 8.4 Ltre.
I thought the exact same thing.
That sounds Beasty ❤️
Probably a good thing this wasn't released. A lot of standard sports car drivers would falsely assume they can handle this thing and end up around trees.
Why the hell didn’t we get a v12 vette that shit would’ve set the bar high as hell for the later generations
That crazy V12 Falconer engine was so powerful, it could shred the rear tires or burn the clutch to an unfamiliar driver. After testing the quarter-mile on this beast, they didn't bother to verify its top speed. The side pipes and wheels were changed and sent to the museum. The other monster Corvette tested then was the Callaway Twin-Turbo, now that was the "Sledgehammer". :-)
one of a kind stand alone, my friend
Hello DtRockstar1 my first Corvette was a 84 and it had been completely restored as I had just bought I did modify the twin throttle body just like the old guy would like lingenfelter on the intake and I got it up to 189mph it was fast and fun and not bad on gas modifying can be fun to do and made it go with no problems but unfortunately I had to sell it but one day I will buy another one or two that v12 Corvette is one I would love to have or build one one day I love Corvette motor cars completely Peace
That looks awesome! I prefer without the side pipes, they don't really fit. Sounds great too.
Yo this is a true UA-cam OG right here!
Cool content just found this channel and man wish they would built this vette
Very cool! I never knew Chevrolet shoved a V12 into a C4.
Excellent video on a beautiful car 🚗
Thank you very much!
Those wheels look terrific on it
It does have a maritime sound to it like a high powered boat.
It sounds like it wasnt running on all 12 cylinders, smoke is most likely the raw fuel, hardened valve seals, possibly washed out rings from the missfire if its been ran a lot like that. Id love to straighten it out. Glad it didnt fall in the hole
Nice!
No car manufacturer has even made a V12 for the general public. They just want V12s to be a luxury for the rich. That Corvette got real close to changing everything. Such a shame GM made a 180 and decided they don't want to be nice.
Love the smoke on startup
He killed that clutch for sure and it’s smokes pretty good. Lol. Sounds like it’s down a cylinder or two as well
imagine if they made a v12 corvette hypercar and only made 100 models would be insane
Geeze Louise, I thought I knew my Vettes, but this Unicorn is amazing! How did you ever get an invite to film this while they had it out and about? With Corvettes at Carlisle currently going on, your upload is quite timely. I'd love to know the back-story as to why GM never followed through with making this model available. Can you imagine the sales if they had? What year is attached to this C4? I'm thinking maybe the 1990 C4 ZR1 was already in production, which was just about double in cost in from the base C4's, so probably cost to produce and sell this beast is the ultimate answer to not offering it. Thank you. Save the Wave🙋🏼♂️
Supposedly the idea never came to fruition because in 1990 the motor cost was $45,000 alone, something like $89,000 today (adjusted for inflation).
OMG I didn't know that Corvettes at Carlisle was going on at the time of this upload! That's HUGE! As far as not offering it, I think @I Forgot My Name nailed it with the cost. Plus, I'm sure the car wouldn't handle all that great with such a long wheelbase, and the proportions were off. Still an amazing vehicle though!
You hit the proverbial nail on the head. This is pretty much just a straight road Vette and probably would have been a great quarter-miler, but that's it.
At 3:26 the left flip up headlight got stuck, glad to know my 95 isn't the only one lol
Good ride that clutch buddy
Amazing wow
I may be crazy, but this body-style is prettier than any Corvette that came after 1970.
